"The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love." If you're keeping track of these references back to Exodus 34, make a note of it here. I love how often this name of God shows up in the Old Testament. No, it isn't a hundred times, but it is certainly enough to be significant. It might do us well to memorize this short statement as a way for us to think about and talk about God. "What is God like? Great question. Well, he is gracious and very merciful. He is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love." From this simple statement, we could leap into the depths of the gospel message of salvation, judgment, and redeeming love.

"The Lord is faithful in all his words and kind in all his works." This is a difficult thing for us to consider sometimes. We wonder if the work of God is genuinely kind and good. "What about the flood?" someone might ask. We have to come to the place where we understand that it is in the nature of God to be good. He only does what is good and right. We need to adjust our view of what is good to match his view and not seek to conform him to our perspective. Revelation 18 deals with the destruction of spiritual Babylon, and chapter 19 immediately turns to the saints in heaven rejoicing over God's righteous victory. What God does is good. We must also remember we live in a sinful, fallen world where literally millions of wicked things happen every single day. But because God is good, he will deal with it. Remember, he is "slow to anger," but his anger against the wicked is coming.

What a fantastic thing it would be if we, the church could control our tongues. "Out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks." I think about that very often. I've frequently considered that the things our tongues speak about reveal what our hearts delight in. It grieves me sometimes to see the things my heart must treasure. (based on the words that fill my mouth) So I find this prayer beautiful, "Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips."

Another significant measure of a person's character is how they respond to rebuke. Some people take it upon themselves to "right every wrong" they perceive, but others rebuke from a place of love and genuine care for the wayward individual. A person of character receives the rebuke well, "Let a righteous man strike me- it is a kindness; let him rebuke me- it is oil for my head." When someone who walks well with the Lord rebukes us, it should shape us well into the image of Christ and should be like an anointing of oil on our heads. Consider David's response in 2 Samuel 12 when Nathan rebuked the king for his sin with Bathsheba and his murder of Uriah. David wrote the 51st Psalm in response. He did not refuse the rebuke. If we reject a righteous rebuke, it shows a weakness of character.

I have long loved the last two verses of this particular Psalm. "Test me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." I've prayed these verses often over the last 25 years or so. I desperately want to have the God who formed me and knows me also to shape my heart and thoughts. I know that there is nowhere I can hide from his presence, nor is there anywhere I'm beyond his ability to rescue or deliver. I trust that he formed me for his glory and honor. I am convinced that there is not a breath I draw into my lungs; he has not counted. I am sure that his hand will lead me and that the darkness that occasionally engulfs me is as bright as the noonday sun to him. He goes before me as a champion and follows after me as my guard. If I sit down, he sees it; when I sleep soundly or restlessly and rise up to the task before me, he is at my side.

"If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But with you, there is forgiveness, that you may be feared." This is such a wonderful couple of lines. I think we all readily agree with the first part; if God were marking all our sins, none of us would come forth clean. However, the second phrase presents a problem for us because we are not used to thinking this way about "fear." There is forgiveness with God that he may be "feared." As I pointed out in the video, this is not terror. We know that we who are in Christ are considered righteous and holy and that there is no condemnation for us, nor is there any punishment. But consider these two statements together; if God marked all our sins, we would be utterly scorned, but God has graciously lavished on us forgiveness so that he might be rightly reverenced. He is the one who knows our hearts fully and knows every sin we have ever committed or will commit, and he casts them into the sea and washes us in the saving blood of Jesus, his son. If someone did not know the depth of our depravity but offered us forgiveness, we might say something along the lines of, "You don't know how bad I've been" or "If you knew how many mistakes I'd made, you would not want to forgive me." But God knows the reaches of our sinfulness, loves us, and forgives us. This is what triggers in us the response of waiting for the return of the Lord more than the watchmen wait for the morning.

Only that work that God does will remain. Think back on the building of the tower of Babel; humanity thought they could build themselves an enduring name. But nothing man does will ultimately survive. Only what God does endures. (By the way, that is great news regarding our salvation. Since our salvation is the work of God, it shall undoubtedly endure.)

Also, consider verse 2, "It is vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep." In our Western culture, we always keep adding things to our schedules. There is always another event we feel obligated to be part of. We would do well to teach ourselves and our children that it is okay to rest. (Again, this speaks to our salvation. We move away from our works and find our rest in the finished work of God.)

These 176 verses are heavy enough to discourage us. After all, according to this text, we have to be blameless according to the Law, keep the testimonies, seek God with our whole hearts, do no wrong, diligently keep the precepts, keep the statutes, and fix our eyes on his commandments. All while making sure we have an upright heart in all things. It is an overwhelmingly impossible task set before us.

"How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word." I loved this verse and used it often to encourage people to study and know the Scripture. But that isn't what the Psalmist has in mind. Here, "word" means the Law, testimonies, precepts, statutes, and commandments of God. And if we can keep them perfectly, we would be pure. But, spoilers, we can't keep them perfectly. We need a savior. We need the righteousness that gloriously comes from faith. We agree with the Psalmist in verse 41, "Let your steadfast love come to me, O Lord, your salvation ACCORDING TO YOUR PROMISE."

"Why should the nations say, 'Where is their God?'" This is an interesting statement. You can imagine a scenario where the people of God appear to be abandoned by him, and the enemies of God would say, with a mocking tone, "Where is their God now?" In this text, the people of God respond, "Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases."

Though the nations may mock us, as they do even today, by saying, "Where was your God when this tragedy happened, or that atrocity;" we can now respond with, "He is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases." But of those who do not worship the creator of heaven and earth, of those who worship idols, we say, "You serve gods who can not speak, see, hear, smell, feel, or walk. And those of you who serve such gods will become like them." The antithesis is true for us who follow the Lord God; he is life, and in him, we have life. He is powerful, and he makes us like him. We are now being transformed from glory to glory into the likeness of Jesus.

Psalm 110 is directly quoted or alluded to about 30 times in the New Testament. This makes it the most quoted Old Testament passage (in the New Testament) by a long shot. We might wonder why it was such a significant section of Scripture. Why would these few verses, and two in particular, catch the attention of the Jewish people, Jesus, and the first preachers of the gospel? In part, the answer is that it was considered a clear text foreshadowing the coming of the Messiah. Jesus referenced it to show that the Messiah was not just a son of David but instead Lord to David. The Jewish people were looking for an earthly descendant of David, and Jesus showed them through this Psalm that the Messiah would reign above and over David in power and significance.

From Genesis 15 through the end of Judges, about 1000 years are covered. That is 217 chapters of the Bible. That is a lot of history and a lot of reading. If you wanted to get the Cliffs Notes version of that section of the Scripture, you can't do better than these two Psalms. As you can see from our additional reading today, these two chapters cover the exodus of the Hebrew people relatively thoroughly. There are nods to all the significant events from God's covenant with Abraham to the ruling Judges that will lead Israel for nearly 350 years. Once again, you don't need to memorize these chapters to appreciate them, but knowing where to find them and what they talk about is helpful. If you find yourself in a teaching position within your church family, these two chapters are a great resource to introduce and summarize a lengthy chunk of the Old Testament. Of course, it is always great to know the details, but these two chapters certainly save some time.
