It would be difficult to pick my favorite verses from the Bible, but I imagine some from today have to be in the mix. "Bless the Lord, o my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, heals all your diseases, redeems your life from the pit, crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's."

What incredible benefits we have in Christ! What beautiful reasons we have for blessing God from our souls. By faith, he forgives all our sins so that they are not counted against us. He heals from disease. He redeems us from death. He crowns us with steadfast love and mercy. He satisfies us with his goodness. How could we not bless God for his gracious kindness towards us?

We are reminded here of the name by which God reintroduced himself to Moses, "The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love." And we celebrate that "he does not deal with us according to our sins."

What a great perspective Psalm 84 gives us on life. All our longing should be for the courts of the Lord. I often wonder if my soul "longs, yes faints" for the presence of God. If I'm being honest, I imagine I am seldom in love with the idea of the presence of God. This life is so distracting. I enjoy my wife, my kids, my work, and the many activities that keep me busy. However, the cry of my heart should be for the return of Christ, his presence, and his dwelling place. I want to come to the place where I am constantly convinced that "a day in [his] courts is better than a thousand elsewhere." Don't get me wrong, if you ask me if I believe heaven is better than earth, I'd always say "yes" and that emphatically. But why does that truth live in the recesses of my mind rather than be the shaping factor of how I live each moment? The sufferings of this present age are nothing compared to the glory of the revelation of Christ. When Christ, who is my life, appears, I will appear with him in glory. Every bit of my hope should be set on the coming of Jesus. His eminent return should shape how I now conduct myself in holy reverence during my stay on earth.

The vine imagery is used enough in the Scripture to at least make us pay attention to it. All three major prophets use this language to speak of Israel and the idea of a vineyard, forests, trees, and the garden of Eden. Israel was a vine taken out of Egypt and planted in Canaan. It spread abroad and flourished, but it turned from the Lord and was brought to nothing. Reading through the few texts I've included below from Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel will be helpful. This will give you more insight into how this language is used in the Scripture and how we might better understand it here in Psalm 80.

You don't have to memorize the 73rd Psalm, but I highly recommend you know what it teaches and where to find it. Asaph considered the wicked, and his "steps had nearly slipped." He was "envious of the arrogant." Asaph looked at the evil people of the world and was convinced they were better off than he was. They seemed to be affluent and well-fed. They seemed to have all they desired, with no lack. Asaph, for a moment, wanted to be like them, until he remembered their end and his own. The wicked are set in slippery places and brought to destruction. God will bring the righteous into his gracious presence. God himself is the portion and blessing of the righteous. We, too, can forget the end of the story and be momentarily jealous of the apparent ease of the lives of the wicked. But we must hold fast to what we know of Jesus, righteousness, and his return. We must put all of our hope on the return of Christ, knowing that our suffering in this day and age pales in comparison to the glory that will be revealed to us on the day Jesus returns.

One of the things you have learned by this point in our time together is how much of the Scripture points to the person and work of Jesus. These two Psalms reveal Jesus, and of course, both speak to Judas. It shouldn't surprise us how many times the New Testament quotes the Old Testament. In Psalm 69, we see several references to Jesus that are fulfilled in the New Testament.
"Those who hate me without cause" is quoted in John 15:25. "It is for your sake that I have borne reproach" is referenced in Hebrews 12 and 13. "Zeal for your house has consumed me" is unpacked in John 2:17. "The reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me" is found in Romans. "They gave me poison (or gall) for food, and for my thirst, they gave me sour wine to drink" references the two types of drinks Christ was offered on the cross. We must remember that everything Jesus did and said was to fulfill what the Scripture declared he would accomplish. Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ, the Anointed One, but to be confirmed as the Anointed One, he needed to fulfill every Old Testament Scripture that pointed to him. And he did. Perfectly.

Since I was in seventh grade, I have been struck by the number of people who will say they don't believe in God, but that they are sure if there is a God and if there is a heaven, they will end up there one day because they have been "basically good." Understand what I'm saying here; they disbelieve God, but imagine if there is a God, he must weigh our deeds on a moral scale similar to how we might weigh something as good or bad and that their good deeds must outweigh their evil deeds. Now, every Christian would say that we are made righteous only by faith in Jesus and his completed work on the cross and the empty tomb, but we still tend to talk about people as basically good or basically evil. I even hear Christians saying things like, "I really hope they come to faith; they are such a good, kind person." Or, "I don't see how they could ever come to faith; they are so wicked or evil." Even though we know, as believers, that the Bible teaches not a single one of us is "good" apart from God and that we are all by nature "objects of wrath," we still tend to measure people by their own merits rather than the merits of Christ.

If we believe Jesus' message and put into practice the faith he outlined for us, we will find our feet firmly planted on the rock and our houses established on a firm foundation. We who put our trust in the Lord are blessed.
Psalm 40 points us again to Jesus. I'm not sure we should be surprised at this point. In fact, if we are still surprised that the Bible directs us again and again to the person and work of Jesus, we might not be paying close enough attention. Four verses of this particular Psalm are quoted in Hebrews 10 and point us back to Exodus 21 from Episode 35. Jesus is the servant who submitted himself willingly to the Father. Jesus' death was the epitome of servanthood. Christ has revealed to the great congregation the gracious work of God the Father. You are reading these words today because of Jesus's testimony about God in heaven and righteousness through him. You and I are both evidence of the continued work and grace of God brought about through Jesus, the greatest servant.

We are not surprised to find in the opening statements of Psalm 36, that for the wicked, "There is no fear of God before his eyes." The wicked man, like the fool, says "there is no God." But the steadfast love of the Lord, his righteousness, and his judgments reach to the heavens and down to the great deeps. We who put our trust and confidence in God see that with him "Is the fountain of life, and in [his] light do we see light."
Many of the Psalms contrast the way of the wicked with the way of the righteous and how differently they regard God and the things of God. We know that the wicked are like chaff that the wind drives away, but those who find their delight in the Lord and trust in him remain steadfast, filled with the fullness of God. We faithful ones will "inherit the land."
