Jesus, on the cross, speaks again, "Into your hand, I commit my spirit." I think often about how much confusion we could erase from our theology if we just knew the Bible better, but 1189 chapters and over 31,000 verses is a lot of information to become familiar with. No wonder we find ourselves struggling, at times, to understand some of the hard things of the Bible. But perhaps those "hard" things aren't as bad as we think. Maybe we need a little more time in the Scriptures.
Once again, Jesus quoted from the Old Testament when he made this statement. Specifically, he is quoting Psalm 31:5. In context, we see that God rescues the one who is afflicted and hated and delivers the afflicted one from the wicked. Wicked men set upon Jesus; it was, after all, their hour and the power of darkness. But God would deliver Jesus from those who opposed him.

Having just left the Psalm of the Cross, we now come to the Psalms of the Shepherd and the King. I love the way these three Psalms sit together. Jesus is our salvation, guides us like a shepherd, and will reign over us as a king.
The 23rd Psalm is easily the most famous Psalm of all. How many of us had a grandmother or parent hanging this Psalm in the house somewhere? I can't wait to talk to you about Jesus, the "good Shepherd," but that needs to be saved for our discussion in the book of John or in one of the major prophets. What I hope we take from this Psalm is the confidence of the one being led by the shepherd, "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever." That is our hope as believers. The goodness and mercy of God follow us all our days, and we will one day dwell in the house of God forever. We view our sufferings in this world in light of the hope of glory set before us in Christ.

The twenty-second Psalm has to be one of the most important Old Testament texts in terms of understanding the cross of Christ. I grew up in church. There has never been a period of my life where I haven't been in church; more than that, there has never been a time in my life when I only went to church on Sunday mornings. As a kid, I was in church on Sunday mornings and Sunday nights, Wednesday nights for Awana's, Monday nights for visitation, Vacation Bible School, summer camps, Royal Ambassadors, choir, and Evangelism Explosion training. From the time I was sixteen, I have been leading Bible studies, and by the time I was twenty-two, I had started my own non-profit organization where I spent the next twenty years traveling, preaching all manner of events. I could not possibly tell you how early it was that I was first taught that God forsook Jesus on the cross. After all, Jesus declared, "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?" Not once in all those years did anyone point me to Psalm 22. When I finally made the connection, it was around my thirty-eighth birthday.

This life can be abundantly challenging. It is difficult for us to have the attitude that we indeed "Have a beautiful inheritance." Too often, we, people of faith, measure our portion and inheritance by the money in our accounts, the food in the fridge, the health in our bodies, the joy in our friendships, the longevity of our days, or the pleasures we've partaken in. However, as Christians, we ought to know and remember that God is the fullness of our portion and inheritance. I am still taken back to that day in June 2000 when I read this Psalm and wept. I did not feel like God had been gracious or good to me then. It was a major shift for me. From that moment forward, I would remind myself that my fullness and blessing were found in God, my Redeemer. It is still something I have to remind myself of from time to time to find my greatest joy in God. We ought to rejoice that in God's "presence there is fullness of joy" and pleasures forevermore are at his "right hand."

"The fool says in his heart, 'There is no God.'" We don't have to look hard to find people who would make such a statement. It is everywhere we look today. And the people who would deny God are bold about doing so. The Bible calls them fools, and so they are. Mankind, left to their own devices, are enemies of God and separated from him by their sin. But in Christ, and in him alone, do we find the means for forgiveness and life everlasting. Of course, it would be foolish to deny the God who made you and provided the means for salvation.
But this text isn't just for the fools. Paul, in Romans, uses it to show that all people, Jews and Gentiles, are sinners. There is no one righteous before God and no one with understanding. Not a soul seeks after God. This text should cause us to at least ask follow-up questions to those who say we all have a God-shaped hole in us that we are trying to fill. This passage in Romans also does away with the faulty concept that mankind is basically good for we read, "no one does good, not even one." Paul does go a bit overboard in Romans 3 and quotes multiple Old Testament texts to prove his point.

As short as most of the Psalms are, they are packed with all sorts of biblical truth and reference so many other texts. This first Psalm deals with the major biblical theme of God dealing differently with the righteous than he does the wicked. The righteous man endures because he is planted in God. The wicked are ultimately destroyed because they don't find their lives planted in God. The wicked are as temporary as chaff blown away by the wind.
The second Psalm is a personal favorite. It gets used poorly, or at least the eighth verse gets used poorly. The second Psalm reveals what will happen to those who reject God's anointed one (Jesus). But, of course, the last phrase of the Psalm gives us hope: "Blessed are all who take refuge in him." He will destroy those who are bold enough to reject Jesus, but those who cling to him will be saved. Of interest as well is the fact that God laughs at his enemies. This seems to be the only situation in which God laughs in the Scripture, though not the only place.

The Queen of Sheba is an impressive woman but not nearly as impressive a person as Solomon. Solomon's wisdom and wealth are so overwhelming that the Queen says, "I did not believe the reports [about you] until I came and my own eyes had seen it. And behold, the half was not told me. Your wisdom and prosperity surpass the report that I heard." The gifts the Queen brought to Solomon pale in comparison to the gifts he sends her home with.
But for all of Solomon's wisdom, he would not be wise enough to be faithful to the Lord. He amassed wealth and wives for himself. He bought horses from Egypt and Kue. In his later years, his heart was drawn after the idols his wives served. "For when Solomon was old, his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and his heart was not wholly true to the Lord his God, as was the heart of David, his father." Solomon served Astoreth, Milcom, Chemosh, and Molech. Molech was particularly known for requiring child sacrifice. It becomes evident that Solomon did not love the Lord, so God raised people as adversaries to him. Solomon died in dishonor and far from God.

Today's reading gives us several amazing things to consider about the beauty and grace of God, but it also gives us one of the most often misapplied verses in the Bible. After Solomon built the temple, he brought the ark of the covenant and placed it in the holy of holies. Interestingly, there "Was nothing in the ark except the two tablets that Moses put there at Horeb, where the Lord made a covenant with the people of Israel." Earlier, we had seen that the ark contained not only the stone tablets but also the golden jar of manna and Aaron's rod that budded. By now, though, the ark has been through several different hands, including the Philistines, so it is no wonder that maybe a few things are missing.
I appreciate the symmetry between God's glory showing up here at the temple and when the tabernacle was erected in Exodus 40. The house of the Lord was "filled with a cloud so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the house of God."

As a guy who really enjoys the details, I am grateful for the specific time stamp placed on the temple building. "In the four hundred and eightieth year after the people of Israel came out of the land of Egypt. If you're keeping track of the timeline, the people left Egypt in Exodus 12. They spent forty years wandering in the wilderness. There were six years of conquest—another 350 years (roughly) of the Judges. Forty years of King Saul, forty more years of King David, and now we are in the fourth year of Solomon.
Solomon drafts forced labor to work on the temple. Solomon's workers spent seven and a half years building the temple and another fourteen years building his own palace. Though this temple was far and away more extravagant than the Tabernacle Moses had constructed, it didn't hold the same sort of weight. We remember that God warned Moses to make the Tabernacle according to God's specifications. We know the Tabernacle was a foreshadow and representation of the things of heaven. I do get caught up in the sheer opulence of the temple of Solomon, with every single surface covered in gold. It must have been quite a sight to see. And, of course, it was the target of the enemies of Judah during warfare.
