They can't all be winners. Some movies don't have what it takes to impress movie goers, but later find their niche with cult classic lovers. This week we talk about two of our favorites from the 80s. Blade Runner is an iconic sci-fi film, infamous for its many edits and re-releases. Clue is an ensemble cast Monty-Python meets Mel Brooks comedy led by the genius Tim Curry. We take a guess at why these failed at the box office, but love for them lives on in many movie lover hearts!
In honor of our completely kick-ass USA Women's Team winning the World Cup BACK-TO-BACK, we're celebrating the great sport of Futbol in movies. This week we cover a highly underrated teen comedy starring the always funny Amanda Bynes (fight us). Then we jump to an incredibly iconic British flick about futbol, culture, gender and friendship. Soccer is great. Women's soccer is better. Bye!
To round out Pride Month we picked a couple of our favorite movies about growing up gay and feature a special guest, our friend Erin! Our first pick was one we've been itching to cover on the podcast. Berry Jenkins' Moonlight is one of the most significant queer films of this century and we discuss why that is. Then we jump to the YA book-based Love, Simon. This sweet, endearing teen dramedy has great moments of highlighting the strange differences between growing up heterosexual and queer. Yaaaas Queen.
Happy Pride Y'all! This week we're tackling a couple of our favorite, very iconic queer movies. Lindsay's pick is the indie turned cult classic Boys Don't Cry and we discussed what being transgender in the 90's meant. Mollie's pick is the iconic Ang Lee film Brokeback Mountain where we discuss the stereotypes and fears surrounding masculine gay men.
Wow, who knew all of that hotness was lurking under those hideous bifocals? This week we take a look at the classic movie trope of a nerd in glasses who suddenly becomes a babe with a new shirt here, some hair product there, and the all important removal of their glasses. First we dive into The Princess Diaries, a timeless movie from our young years that shot Anne Hathaway into fame. Then we jump back to the 80's for a look at the teen love story Can't Buy Me Love. We don't know if this movie was a hit then, but we can tell you it's not a hit now.
Women's reproductive rights have long been a taboo topic of conversation, but they shouldn't be; especially when they're being attacked by policymakers as is the current case. This week we're dissecting two movies about a women's right to choose. Lindsay discusses the HBO-backed Demi Moore passion project that pointed a glaring light on our country's relationship with pregnant women and abortion. Mollie breaks down the incredibly sincere and nuanced comedy Obvious Child, which focuses on the internal struggle and journey a young women goes on when she decides to get an abortion.
John Singleton made his mark in cinema, particularly in black cinema, through telling a variety of stories that are so rarely told on screen. In celebration of his directorial legacy, we take a look at just a couple of our favorites. Lindsay relishes in the high throttle fun of 2 Fast 2 Furious, while Mollie breaks down his debut masterpiece Boyz N The Hood.
It's time we dig into to fantasy a bit, and what's more fantastical than dragons? Plus, we've been watching alot of GoT so a dragon episode was inevitable. This week Lindsay talks about the nineties whimsy of Dragonheart and Mollie can't get over how cute basically everything is in How To Train Your Dragon. Hope you enjoy. If you don't, then Dracarys!
Hey You Guyyyys, let's talk about The Goonies. Seeing as it's Lindsay's birthday week, we decided to spend a whole episode talking about her favorite movie. Arguably one of the best 80's adventure movies around, The Goonies is a goofy, lovable tale of a band of kids hunting down treasure and saving their town. Typical Saturday right?
We wanted to keep it lighthearted, but cheerleaders got things to say y'all. Lindsay dives into an indie favorite about a cheerleader at gay conversion camp, Mollie enjoys the ease of the plot in Sugar & Spice, and we both talk about one of our all-time favorite (with a message people!). It's already been broughten.
