Why are we expected to endure pain? In platonic and romantic relationships, physically, and even culturally. Today, Janelle is joining us to talk about how to work with that pain and find joy. A racial equity advocate, mom to three cats (if you listen carefully, you can hear them in the background), and one of my favorite people in the world, Janelle truly wants YOU to honor yourself, respect your humanity, and to go for what you want.

We've had our glow up. We've changed the name from Detox Therapy to Situationsh!t. It's not that the direction of the show has changed so much as I'm learning what my strengths are and what's fun for me to make. This season we're going to have a lot of great conversations with some brilliant people. I also have some exciting news coming that I can't talk about just yet. Keep tuning in for the big reveal!

Natalie Fewell is a relational therapist who is here with one clear message: we can thrive in the wake of breakup and divorce. There is a lot of societal shame around being single and especially around divorce. But there’s no reason anyone should have to feel that way. The end of a relationship is a learning opportunity, a jumping off point. As a therapist and divorcee, Natalie knows a thing or two about the real grief as well as growth that comes from leaving a relationship behind.

Today’s episode is inspired by another listener question! They ask: “When I think about my past relationships, or even when I am in one, I always think about the good times, and then I get all confused and don’t know if I gave up or am giving up to soon. How will I know?”
Things tend to look better in the rearview. We remember the good times and skip over the bad. However, the relationship ended for a reason. That doesn’t mean that you can’t revisit that it. It just means that if you’re considering going back, you’re going to have to check in and see if they’ve changed - and even if YOU’VE changed. Otherwise, the relationship will likely end the way it did the first time.

Why is figuring out who you are so important? Well mainly so others don’t impose their own values and truths on you. When we let others lead us without questioning who we are, what we stand for, or what we do not tolerate, we lose ourselves.
Take the time to look inside and find a clear sense of your boundaries, expectations, values and desires. Without all the noise, you might be surprised to find what you really want. You can’t expect the people in your life to read your mind - figure out what’s important to you and then communicate and set boundaries accordingly. It can be scary and exhausting but I promise you it’s worth it!

Scarlett is back and she has some wisdom for all you listeners out there. As a personal boundaries coach, Scarlett has a lot of wisdom to impart. Boundaries, as we learn in this episode, help to define who you are, to find your power, to build self esteem and confidence. When you value yourself, it becomes easier to and easier to choose what you are and aren’t willing to tolerate. Consistency is key: hold to the rules you set for others and get used to using your voice.

I don’t even need to tell you this. You know that feeling. You know when your intuition is telling you something. Don't ignore it! I can tell you, from personal experience, that it’s better to trust yourself right away than let things get worse.
