  • celebrating my lil bro rūku 🎉

Today is my lil brothers bday - so let me do the good big brother thing and celebrate him!

I have grown into a huge fan of his work and work ethic and am elevated everyday to work alongside and be building creative avenues for ourselves as artists, brothers and friends.

If you would like to wish him a happy bday, you can find him on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/ruku.music/

If you want to stream his music, you can find him on Spotify here:

For those really keen, I have collated a selection of my favourite works of his from the previous 7 years, some old stuff, some new stuff and some in between.

    HOAX

His first release on Soundcloud, self produced etc - his sound was very experimental for his time and age.

    Poltergeist EP

He appeared twice on my 2015 EP, on Caught Up and Perfect. For someone so fresh to the game he held his own.

    FUYU

FUYU was the 3rd mixtape in the Japanese season series, he was clearly getting better with each release. Specifically this song Full Clip, it was the first time I saw his star potential on show (especially in the accompanying clip which is linked below).

    WATCH THE VID HERE

    Research

This was his first proper release to Spotify - an important step in every artists ascent. He got some dope artwork made in collaboration with our brother Dave and then made some cool merch.

    ACTION POTENTIAL

The experimental as hell EP he made in the depths of covid lockdowns, gaining a lot of respect and self belief from this process.

    Dutch Boys EP

Recorded, mixed and mastered with a tonne of production work on the project, Ku flexed his all round skills on this EP. It was a fond time for us both as we shot content on the streets of Melbourne late at night while the world was in lockdown. We were shackled in many ways, but we didn’t the moment inhibit our creativity and progress.

    Santana

One of his most recent drops and a song I’ve come to refer to as the soundtrack to the come up! His first solo release with a well produced music video and rollout - confidence on show.

    Happy bday big Ku!

    Love always your big bro,

    SAV x

  • welcome to THE SAV SHOW

    Today is a new day.

Today I present to you the launching of my new podcast: The Sav Show!

I launched Slap Happy in October of 2020 because I wanted another place to share my thoughts and ideas - and I believe that I achieved that.

The podcast created an avenue for me to build relationships, learn new skills and develop a brand as an entertainer and conversationalist, but for sometime now it hadn’t felt quite right… it hadn’t felt 100% like me.

Most likely because of the inner turmoil and constant back and forth that I experienced trying to brand it and give it direction and clarity. It had lead to a lot of misused time, trying to figure out what the podcast was and how to best present it to the world.

I realised that it needed a rebranding and a clear mandate. The new mandate looks like this:

Do cool s**t. Make observations. Explore and experiment. Share what you learn/experience and call it content.

I am the brand, I am the leverage - I always was, it’s just taken me some time (and the study of some great digital creators) to realise.

Anyway, here it is, episode one where I basically ramble about those exact things and try to articulate my reasoning (not too well might I add).

Thanks for joining me, thanks for listening and if you enjoy the pod or wanna know/hear more from me, pleaser subscribe to the podcast and drop me a rating.

Thanks for tuning in, please don't forget to drop a comment and review and let me know what you thought of this episode.

    With gratitude,

    Sav x

  • Seeking Human Potential & The Rising Tide at Absolute MMA with Sam Marles & Diellon Lihari

Sup gang - welcome to Episode 63 of Slaaap Haaapy!!

Was fortunate enough to sit down and chat with 2 of Australia's most promising young mixed martial artists on Slap Happy over the weekend.

Sam Marles and Diellon Lihari fight out of Absolute MMA in Melbourne and have made some impressive leaps forward in their respective careers recently. I wanted to chat to the lads about their intro and journey in MMA, as well as the mindset required to flourish in such a violent and demanding sport.

We spoke for nearly 2 hours and covered a host of topics including their introductions into the sport, transition to Absolute MMA, recent success of Absolute MMA, their career goals and the camaraderie and brotherhood they share on this journey.

The boys are funny, intelligent and full of wisdom and I really enjoyed our conversation - I hope you do too!

Sup gang - welcome to Episode 62 of Slaaap Haaapy!!

I got to sit down with the homie Kyso to chat about all things come up! Kyso is easily one of the nicest dudes I've met since moving to Melbourne and I think he is a wealth of talent that has only just been tapped.

On the pod we talk about everything from his first releases and the success of his song Blue with Olive Amun, his love of cricket, all the way up to his most recent EP release and the small milestones he has unlocked along the way.

Please enjoy this chat with Kyso, go check his EP out below and if you have any questions, comments or concerns please let me know.

  • Identifying Talent & The Power of Networking with William Gone

Sup gang - welcome to Episode 61 of Slaaap Haaapy!!

I was super privileged to have New York native William Gone come through and sit down with rūku and I for a deep chat on all things music, marketing and hip-hop. Will has a strong history navigating many circles of the entertainment industry both in America and Australia and brought with him a wealth of information and knowledge.

During the conversation we covered a range of topics, starting from his introduction to the industry via the mail room at Madonna's own record label Maverick Records, to his time at Universal Music and more recently his adventures managing R&B talent Andre Winter. Through his tenure at Maverick and Universal, Will spent time with some of the most powerful people in hip-hop and has played a role in finding and developing American rap powerhouses Crucial Conflict and Bishop Nehru.

Will has a genuine love for hip-hop and an infectious energy when it comes to managing talent and unlocking new levels of hustle, the man genuinely lives and breathes this stuff and he was so great to chat to.

  • The Silver Lining From Loss & What's Next with Talakai

Sup gang - welcome to Episode 60 of Slaaap Haaapy!!

Back in the day I would regularly make the trip up to Newcastle from the Central Coast to play shows. Newcastle's hip-hop scene at the time was bubbling, with local promoters like Micks King, Geezer & The Madhouse Collective and MITUS putting on shows at really frequent interval... there was always an opportunity to jump on the mic if you were hungry enough.

At these shows I would often run into Talakai, a young MC with a rapid flow and all the braggadocio of a local superstar. Like all other MC's I saw him as competition, but we became friendly and would often support each other at these shows. I loved his beat choices, as he would often rap over some of the harder/bassier style of beats that I also really enjoyed.

After years of twists and turns with our own unique journey's through music and hip-hop playing out, we finally get a chance to sit down and properly catch up and chat about Tala's rise over the last few years, as well as some of the highs and lows that he has experienced in getting to this place. We get to touch on the meaning behind his first ever song release, some of the epic highlights of touring with Australia's hottest rap property in ChillinIT, as well as what's next for the Novocastrian ninja of rap.

  • Professionalism In Australian Hip-Hop (My Thoughts After Watching Onyx)

Sup gang - welcome to Episode 59 of Slaaap Haaapy!!

I went and watched American hip-hop legends Onyx at Laundry Bar in Melbourne recently and was so impressed and inspired that I wanted to talk about what I was thinking. The level of professionalism and intentionality was so remarkable and something I am not going to forget anytime soon.

As I result I thought it would be my responsibility to speak up and share with the Australian hip-hop community why and where I think we can be better as a collective, and in turn continue to push our competitiveness internationally.

  • My First Fight Experience (A Review)

Sup gang - welcome to Episode 58 of Slaaap Haaapy!!

I recently embarked on the journey of a lifetime. About 2 months ago I was presented an opportunity, one that I saw very differently in the initial phases, but one that grew into something much more beautiful and came to be really quite formative. I trained like a fighter for 2 months and prepared for my first ever boxing match. I lost the fight, but gained so much knowledge and insight into what it is to be human and what is required to excel and to master something.

I loved every second of the experience and although at times struggled and wasn't sure that I would be able to make it through, knew that I was on the right path and continued to find ways to push myself. I am so grateful to this experience and everyone who played a roll in it and would highly recommend the experience to anyone struggling with something that they feel they need to overcome.

I hope you enjoy my review of my first ever fight experience and all of the emotions and thoughts that came with it.
