Welcome, partygoers! We’re so glad you’ve joined Dave and Mary as they sit around the old gramophone and spin some discs. As always, there’s lots of room in the Listening Party Rumpus Room so pull up a comfy chair and settle down to hear this week’s selection of great tunes!
On this episode, things get a little quieter after the noisy, punkish mid-90s Canadiana of the last two episodes. For Dylan O’Connell’s second mixtape, Dave seems to have unconsciously chosen a more sedate group of songs to counteract his selection of songs on Dylan’s first mixtape.
We hope you’ll enjoy Dave’s choice of songs:
* Super Furry Animals – “Tradewinds” – Rings Around the World, 2001* The Shins – “Kissing the Lipless” – Chutes Too Narrow, 2003* Drive By Truckers – “Danko, Manuel” – The Dirty South, 2004* Prefab Sprout – “Bonny” – Steve McQueen, 1986* Sharon Van Etten – “Nothing Will Change” – Are We There, 2014* Rita Lee and Tutti Frutti – “O Toque” – Fruito Proibido, 1975* Death Vessel – “Bruno’s Torso” – Nothing Is Precious Enough for Us, 2008* Air – “Run” – Talkie Walkie, 2003* Richard Hell and the Voidoids – “Walking on the Water” – Blank Generation, 1977* Low – “Silver Rider” – The Great Destroyer, 2005
Also played on this bi-week’s episode:
* Creedence Clearwater Revival – “Walk on the Water” – Creedence Clearwater Revival , 1968 (The cover of this song by 1970s art punkers Richard Hell and the Voidoids uses the original title of the song when CCR recorded it in 1966 under their previous name The Golliwogs. This single – credited to John and Tom Fogerty under the nom de tunes Toby Green and Rann Wilde – uses a slightly different arrangement and doesn’t feature the longer instrumental work out of the later album cut. a curiously deep cut of a choice by a supposedly scorched earth-everything sucks before 1970-something or other punk act.)
Here is the original version of The Golliwogs “Walking on the Water”:
