We’re a little late to both Valentine’s Day and our Three Year Anniversary (snanniversary?) beloved listeners, but not too late to tackle this week’s topic - Romcoms!

Starting with what makes a romcom work and how it’s different from just plain old romance films, the Sneople then turn their attention to a long and joyfully discussed list of their top romcom hits and misses. After Helena makes an late episode departure, Ezra and Matty wrap up with a talk about how romcom tropes have bled into fanfic and what it is about the stories of people falling in love that’s still so compelling time and again.

Matty also finally reveals themselves as the conman of podcasting, and there may be some talk of how tall Darth Vader is in VR (spoilers: he’s very tall).

It’s the long awaited (by us) Episode 69 of Sneople at the Movies, beloved listeners, and your Sneople are reaching for the low hanging fruit for this one by talking about Sex in Film!

They start off with an icebreaker about their most uncomfortable movie sex scene experiences, but things turn pretty serious when they start discussing the current Internet Hot Takes about sex scenes in film. From there, they get into who gets to define what makes Good Art, how you can feel represented through on-screen sexuality, and and how queerness ties into all of it. They also talk about fanfic, obviously.

They get off topic at one point to talk about the Oscars and how angry they are about them, because it’s that time of year. They still tie it into the topic at hand, they promise!

Welcome to the new year, beloved listeners! The Sneople are (mostly) refreshed and ready to go after their winter break, but they’re easing into the year with something simple - a whole episode of What We Sneep!

Between the three of them there’s a lot of cinema ground to cover from the end of the year. They start with the Fellowship of the Ring 20th anniversary (which of course they all celebrated) and go on to talk about all kinds of picks - from Black Christmas (1974) to Pig (2021) to that terrible Angels and Demons movie with pit stops at every genre in between. Helena ends up sorting what they saw into what they cried about and what they didn’t, because it was just easier that way.

They of course also talk about being able to all go to brunch together and what books they’re reading. Is it really a Sneople catch up episode without 13 tangents?

In their longest episode yet, the Sneople wraps up 2021 with a tribute to one of their favorite artists, who has recently passed away - Stephen Sondheim!

After a very quick What We Sneep, Helena and Ezra embark on a chronological discussion of almost every Sondheim musical, with Matty chiming in once they reach Into the Woods. After Helena dips out of the episode, Matty and Ezra wrap up the list with Assassins and Road Show/Bounce. They close out the episode with an emotional discussion on his legacy and the strange process of grieving a celebrity you never knew but made a profound impact on your life. Spoiler alert: there is crying involved.

After this episode, the Sneople will be taking a winter break and will return in January 2022! They wish you a happy new year and hope this extra long ep is enough to tide you over until then.

We’re returning to retrospectives this week on Sneople at the Movies with a look into a year that set the stage for what 80’s cinema would become - 1984!

Matty and Helena start off with a typical distracted discussion of theater etiquette before getting back on track to go over notable films of the year (spoiler: there’s a lot!) and contrasting that list with what ended up being nominated for Oscars. In a twist that may not surprise you, there’s less overlap then you would hope. They end the episode with a deep dive into Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, because they are nothing if not true to themselves.

Also, Matty gets distracted so thinking about Spock that forget they’re recording a podcast and Helena gives out some blanket behavior permissions for you theater-goers out there.

The season for creeping scares is over, beloved listeners, but that doesn’t mean the love of all things strange has to end - this week, the Sneople take on Weird Sci-fi Movies!

After some brief talk on what the best and worst months of the year are, it becomes clear that this episode was recorded on a very special day No, not Ezra’s birthday (though it was pretty close) - it was the one year anniversary of November 5th 2020, aka the day large swathes of the internet lost it’s collective mind. Matty, Helena, and Ezra talk about the day in question and how Supernatural is somehow on season 17 despite ending a year ago. From there, they get into the meat of their actual topic and try to define what makes a sci-fi “weird” in a way you don’t see so much in other genres. Yes, they do talk about Dune (2021) a LOT.

Also please clap, Ezra and Matty are/were both rushing to catch up on two different games with a lot of content before new content comes out and it’s very stressful.

It’s the Season of the Witch, beloved listeners, and although they are down a Sneople, Matty and Ezra bravely press on to talk witches in media for their second Halloween episode of the season!

Before they get too deep into their topic, Matty and Ezra take a quick side journey into something that’s been on Ezra’s mind - Fandom Anxiety and feeling like you have to be very serious about everything you consume or you’re doing it wrong. Afterwards, things lighten up a little as they get into the heart of the episode and talk witches through the ages, covering everything between The Wizard of Oz and the 90’s and early 2000’s obsession with girl power witches. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Sneople ep without some Gender Thoughts about what witches meant for two people who were raised as girls and how they still feel about them today.

Final thoughts: Male witches? Critically underused.

It’s Halloween (or not far from it), beloved listeners! For the sake of both hosts and listeners less horror-inclined, the Sneople start off the season with something a little easier to handle: horror comedies!

The Sneople start off with what makes a horror comedy, the many ways the two genres can mix, and what makes them such a good entry into the horror genre. From there, they talk about horror parodies that hit and ones that missed (we’re looking at you, Scary Movie Franchise). The whole episode culminates in them, shockingly, discussing camp and queerness in horror, and why they all go so well together.

They also discuss their individual odds at taking down Michael Myers - while opinions vary, they can at least all agree that if Chucky was real, none of them would make it.

After a fairly heartfelt last episode, the Sneople are well overdue for a goofy ep - don’t worry, beloved listeners, they’ve got you covered. This week on Sneople, we’re pitting two Bad Good movies against each other to see which is the true Best Worst Movie of All Time!

In Helena’s corner, we have Deep Blue Sea (1999), and the episode begins with them explaining the plot of the shark-themed horror classic and why she can’t stop thinking about it. In Matty’s corner is Dracula 2000 (2000), and they pick up where Helena leaves off by explaining this modern Dracula adaptation. This all leads to the dramatic reveal of Dracula 2000’s plot twist, a spirited debate of the pros and cons of both movies, and a surprising triple feature suggestion.

Though Ezra was our Arbiter of Taste for this episode, we’re dying to know which of our picks you think is the Best Worst Movie of All Time - we’re always taking thoughts on the subject @people_snake on twitter!

They may not be J Jonah Jameson, but our heroes sure do love to talk webheads - don’t worry, they’re not gonna put him on the front page of the Daily Bugle. Instead, this week the Sneople are discussing the Sam Raimi Spiderman movies!

For those who have yet to enjoy these particular films, the Sneople provide brief (and not so brief, in the case of Spiderman 3) recaps of all three movies, interspersed with their thoughts on each film and how they all tie together as a trilogy. They also compare them to the current MCU Spiderman films and why the current MCU just doesn’t fit with our friendly neighborhood Spiderman. They obviously also discuss the wave of Alfred Molina thirst taking over the internet, because this is what he deserves and they agree with the movement wholeheartedly.

They do not discuss the Andrew Garfield Spiderman movies, but he was robbed when they wouldn’t let him play a bi Spiderman. He has a well deserved Tony now, but some crimes can never be forgiven.
