“Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence” (Helen Keller). Like Helen Keller, I also believe that optimism is the key to achieving the dreams you imagine. In this episode, I will describe my take on the definition of optimism, how being optimistic influences goals, famous people that were affected by optimism, how optimism affects our community and optimism’s effect around the world.
–
There are many different definitions of optimism, but Merriam-Webster defines it as a doctrine that this world is the best possible world. Merriam-Webster’s other definition of it is that it is an inclination to put the most favorable construction upon actions and events or to anticipate the best possible outcome. The roots of the word optimism comes from French optimisme, and Latin optimum.
–
“Optimism is a strategy for making a better future. Because unless you believe that the future can be better, you are unlikely to step up and take responsibility for making it so” (Noam Chomsky). Personally, that is my favorite quote concerning the meaning of the word optimism.

Porn’s public perception has come a long way in recent years, but it still carries negative stereotypes in the minds of many. Why get involved in an industry that many see as shady or morally degrading?
–
But while some people look down on and frown at women working in the porn industry, we must realize that it is their choice for choosing porn as their career path. Different stars have different reasons for getting into the industry: reasons like sex, attention and fun — along with a multitude of others — cropped up in a 2012 article published in International Journal of Sexual Health, which asked 176 porn actresses to describe the reasons that drove them to their profession.
–
But the most commonly cited reason for women to do porn? Money.
–
Pornography is a billion-dollar industry with thousands of websites, magazines, movies and conventions. Women can make a lot of money in the porn industry, as the earning potential is quite incredible. Instead of working your way up in a 9-5 or an entry-level, low-paying job like in fast food, the dollars in porn are significant, and require much less work. For some it is a career, while for others it may just be a stepping stone to other things in life that they want to pursue.

You are terrified and running along a dark, narrow corridor. Something very evil and scary is chasing you, but you’re not sure why. Your fear is compounded by the fact that your feet won’t do what you want—it feels like they are moving through molasses. The pursuer is gaining, but when it finally catches you, the whole scene vanishes…and you wake up.
–
Almost by definition, a dream is something you are aware of at some level. It may be fragmentary, disconnected, and illogical, but if you aren’t aware of it during sleep then it isn’t a dream. Many people will protest, “I never remember my dreams!,” but that is a different matter entirely. Failing to remember a dream later on when you’re awake doesn’t mean you weren’t aware of it when it occurred. It just means the experience was never really carved into your memory, has decayed in storage, or isn’t accessible for easy call back.
–
We all intuitively know what a dream is, but you’ll be surprised to learn there’s no universally accepted definition of dreaming. One fairly safe catch-all is “all perceptions, thoughts, or emotions experienced during sleep.”

You’ll be relieved to hear that choosing the couch is only human. Humans are inherently lazy, which may be a trait left over from our ancestors’ days of conserving energy for the next hunt. Unfortunately, a small new study published in the journal Current Biology finds that even when we do choose to move, our bodies naturally do it in the most economical way possible which is bad news for anyone trying to lose weight.
–
People are inherently lazy because that’s just how our brains are wired, according to new research from the University of British Columbia. The study, published in the Neuropsychologia, set out to solve the “exercise paradox” — why society is getting lazier even though we know the risks associated with an unhealthy, inactive lifestyle. The answer, according to researchers, is that our brains are simply built to pick what’s easier.
–
In normal times, most of us don’t take rest seriously enough. So during this exceptional period, we should embrace the opportunity to rest more if we can – and indeed take those more balanced rhythms of rest and busyness into our lives post shutdown. But during this difficult time, we will find that we are not instinctively lazy creatures. Indeed in a weird way we might find that doing less, and resting more, initially requires quite a lot of effort.

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, our world faced unprecedented scenarios – shortages of cleaning supplies and toilet paper, shelter-in-place orders, and limited space in hospitals. When times were hard for our frontline workers, the public responded with messages of gratitude. From local community groups to Hollywood stars, there was an outpouring of support for medical staffs’ efforts across the country. Lawn signs and white ribbons dotted neighborhoods. Everyone did what they could to make sure hospital workers knew they were appreciated.
–
But this pandemic is far from over and here has been some hard hits to the health care services. While the nation continues the vaccine roll out, COVID-19 cases are still a thing and there has been much burn out in health care workers. As the hospital/health care staff continue to support patients, both with COVID-19 and those needing care for other conditions, now is the time to do what we can to help lift healthcare workers’ spirits and express our ongoing thanks.
–
Working in Health Care is a noble and giving position. There have been many that have left it and although the Covid situation is kind of balanced right now we have less support staff due to many burning out. Now the health care service needs people to fill positions and the ones still in the field need support.

Recently surfacing in the news is the social commentary on the ebb and flow of parenting trends. “Narcissistic Parenting” as it is being called, is an affliction on constructive communities, and an embarrassing example of poor parenting behavior.
–
“This generation’s take on parenting—overbearing, enabling, overindulgent—is a pendulum swing in the opposite direction from the way they were parented,” says doctors in the field of psychiatry.
–
There is an impressive article titled “The Legacy of the Narcissistic Parent,” that states: “narcissism—whether intentional or non—interferes with healthy parenting, steals from your children’s experiences and takes an emotional toll that is often only repairable later on with a healthy dose of elbow grease and therapy.”
–
Media prevalence of this phenomenon is explained by its plain rise in everyday households—especially when it comes to youth sports. We live in a world where having a child who is a ‘winner’ can eclipse what’s best for the family.
–
Fear of becoming a self-involved parent is understandable. Parents occasionally cling to living vicariously through their children, seeing their success in athletics as a reflection of their own success in life. In an effort to avoid this, many parents will forsake their own involvement in their child’s sports teams. The truth is, we shouldn’t shy away from youth sports out of fear!
–
The simple solution is to learn some ways to be an awesome youth sports parent and we will discuss this is todays episode.

Sometimes we look too hard into the future, hoping and praying that tomorrow will be a better day. We resign to “fate”, seeing how it has got its hands all around us. But here is what we are missing when we have such thoughts; we forget to live in the moment we have right now. Life is filled with these moments, in fact, every second is a moment you should fully embrace and live in. As I have said a few times – “we are great at preparing to live our life, but we are bad at actually living it.”

Rapid growth in the market for electric vehicles is imperative, to meet global targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, to improve air quality in urban centres and to meet the needs of consumers, with whom electric vehicles are increasingly popular. However, growing numbers of electric vehicles present a serious waste-management challenge for recyclers at end-of-life. Nevertheless, spent batteries may also present an opportunity as manufacturers require access to strategic elements and critical materials for key components in electric-vehicle manufacture: recycled lithium-ion batteries from electric vehicles could provide a valuable secondary source of materials.
–
Recycling electric-vehicle batteries at end-of-life is essential for many reasons. At present there is little hope that profitable processes will be found for all types of current and future types of electric-vehicle LIBs without substantial successful research and development, so the imperative to recycle will derive primarily from the desire to avoid landfill and to secure the supply of strategic elements. The environmental and economic advantages of second-use and the low volume of electric-vehicle batteries currently available for recycling could stifle the development of a recycling industry in some places. In many nations, the elements and materials contained in the batteries are not available, and access to resources is crucial in ensuring a stable supply chain. Electric vehicles may prove to be a valuable secondary resource for critical materials. Careful husbandry of the resources consumed by electric-vehicle battery manufacturing—and recycling—surely hold the key to the sustainability of the future automotive industry.
–
The short answer to this question is that fossil fuels require much more mining and drilling than clean energy technologies. Today the world mines 8 billion tons of coal every year, whereas the clean energy transition is estimated to require around 3.5 billion tons of minerals in total over the next three decades.
–
We can always do better
Clean energy technologies will always have non-zero climate and environmental impacts. The best solution is to use less energy and materials to begin with. Rather than simply replacing gasoline-fueled cars with EVs, we should also try to reduce car use altogether through better urban planning and public transportation. Walking and biking (including electric bikes and scooters, a.k.a. micromobility) and riding buses and trains all have substantially lower environmental impacts than driving any car. And weatherizing buildings can reduce their energy consumption by one-third.
Thus it’s ultimately better for the environment to deploy clean technologies today than to continue interminably mining, drilling, refining, transporting, and burning dirty fossil fuels, while working toward using less energy and materials in the long-run.

No one likes picking up someone else’s slack. But when a person you are working with leaves early, misses deadlines, and doesn’t give 100% to a project, it can be difficult to determine the best course of action. Should you confront them about their behavior? Speak to your boss? Or mind your own business?
–
We’ve all worked with someone who doesn’t pull his own weight — a person who checks Facebook all day, takes two-hour lunch breaks, and never meets a deadline. But as irritating as it can be, you shouldn’t become the behavior police unless their slacking is materially affecting your work.
–
Dealing with a person who isn’t giving their all can be frustrating, but don’t presume to know the root causes of their behavior — slacking doesn’t always indicate laziness.
–
If your work is affected by this person’s behavior, it’s time to speak up. But don’t ambush them or adopt an accusatory tone. “Approach the conversation with curiosity and compassion,”.
–
Bring specific examples of the offending behavior to the conversation, and clearly explain the impact it’s had on you and others in your group or team. If one conversation doesn’t do the trick, try again. It may be that you weren’t direct or specific enough the first time.
–
There will always be ‘slackers’ in some situations but try to first be empathic and if that doesn’t work take notes. If trying to point out skillfully to the person doesn’t work then either get all the facts and take it to the next level or remove yourself from being affected. Remember, if they are not doing their job it makes your life harder and that weak link needs to be cut.

Oh oh it is Friday the 13th! Just like walking under a ladder, crossing paths with a black cat or breaking a mirror, many people hold fast to the belief that Friday the 13th brings bad luck. Though it’s uncertain exactly when this particular tradition began, negative superstitions have swirled around the number 13 for centuries.
–
We couldn’t open an umbrella while inside because it was bad luck. If something good happened, we had to knock on wood. Whistling indoors was prohibited because that, too, could bring bad luck. When my grandfather accidently broke a mirror he said with great drama, “Seven years bad luck.” He was not joking. He really believed it.
–
Do you think all of this is stupid? Think again. Superstitious beliefs are wide spread. We even go through a childhood stage where we are guided by superstitions. Remember the old chant while skipping along the sidewalk, “Step on a line and break your mother’s spine?” We skipped with great care to prevent the awful decree from coming true.
–
The fact is that superstitious, or magical thinking, when kept within limits, helps us cope with life. I have seen many people who, after having come through a tragic even in their life, conclude that everything happens for a reason. In other words, magical thinking helps us give meaning to events that would otherwise be confusing. We can comfort ourselves with the thought that life is not just a matter of meaningless events that happen to happen.
–
Are you superstitious and if so, what are your superstitions?
