    #136- Very Impressive For Japanese
Welcome back to another episode of the social English podcast.

We have another interesting English repair shop episode.
A Japanese listener asked if I can help with her English. Of course, I said Yes!
In today's episode, the listener wa=nts to talk about the American movie, "Ghost".
She made some really interesting mistakes that I think are important for everyone to learn from.
So let’s correct her English together today!
As with every English repair shop episode, we will have 4 parts.

In part 1, I will read exactly what the Japanese person said in incorrect English.
In part 2, I will say the correct English in a conversational, "Social English " style.
In Part 3, I will give you any hints that I think are important, so that you don't make these same mistakes.
In part 4, I will say the corrected English version at a fast, natural speed.

This way you can also practice your listening skills.

    Thanks for listening,

    -Percy

    #134- What Does "Insane" Mean?

Today we cover another new word or phrase that you may not be familiar with in today's, "What does this mean?" episode.

In these episodes, we take a word that you may think that you know the meaning of.

What is different about this episode is that you will learn a new word or phrase that has a different meaning in modern conversational 'Social English'.

    Today's word is..."Insane".

This word is very popular and used by many native English speakers.

You might know what the normal word, "insane" means.

Now let's define it so you can understand today's word better: Insane- medically, mentally cannot think for oneself; Here is an example: "The main character in this book I’m reading is a criminal, and insane".

That sentence and that definition are of course correct. But... let’s look at how the meaning can help us understand the new word.

The new meaning of "Insane" is an experience that was extraordinary, or better than just great.

    Thanks,

    -Percy

#131- Social English Conversation Basics IIWC 6 In Action

Here is the last part of this series on real-life English conversational basics.

If you missed it, listen to the last 4 episodes where you learn other parts of the IIWC pattern.

Here is a quick review of the topic:

.In most English-speaking countries in “The West”, there is a certain pattern in conversations.

So what is this conversational pattern?

I call it the “IIWC” pattern.

Remember that the “IIWC” pattern is only used for meeting people for the first time.

Today we will listen to some examples of the IIWC pattern in conversations from some American movies.

I chose these conversations so you can hear the IIWC pattern.

Some are clearly easy to hear.

    Other examples are more difficult.

Let’s listen to 3 examples of this pattern.

    Thanks,

#130- Social English Conversation basics IIWC 5 C
In most English-speaking countries in “The West”, there is a certain pattern in conversations.

Here at social English, we want to help you understand the patterns of conversations.
The reason is to help you understand where conversations are starting and what the person who speaks to you is trying to achieve, or their goal.

I am going to give you a structure that you can use to learn this pattern. You can even use it by listening to other people in conversations and see if you can hear the parts of this basic conversation pattern.

I want you to understand this pattern so that you can get more comfortable with speaking English to other people.

When you understand the pattern, you will understand how western English speakers or native English speakers create conversations.

So what is this conversational pattern?I call it the “IIWC” pattern.

Remember that the “IIWC” pattern is only used for meeting people for the first time.
Today we will cover the “C” in IIWC? The “C” stands for “What happens next”.

    Thanks,

    Episode

#129- Social English Conversation basics IIWC 4 W
Here is the fourth part of this series on English conversational basics. We are talking about the IIWC pattern. If you missed it, listen to the last 3 episodes where you learn other parts of the IIWC pattern.

Here is a quick review of the topic.

So what is this conversational pattern? I call it the “IIWC” pattern. Remember that the “IIWC” pattern is only used for meeting people for the first time.

Today we will cover the “W” in IIWC? The “W” stands for “Why?”. The "W" in Why is the 3rd action that happens in the conversation. The Why? W is used in conversation has an important purpose. At this point, you as the listener don’t know why the speaker has started a conversation with you.

The Why? W is meant to do this in the conversation. It also starts to build the next part of the conversation.

    Thanks,

    -Percy
