 Welcome to the Sounds Like a Search and Rescue Podcast! Also known as SLASR. Join an experienced search and rescue volunteer and his friend as they discuss all things related to hiking and search and rescue in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

This week, we welcome our friend Cathalynn Labonte-Smith. Cathalynn is an author who has recently published her new book - Rescue Me - Behind the Scenes of Search and Rescue. Rescue Me takes the reader behind the scenes of some of North America’s riskiest search and rescue operations, sharing real life stories as told by volunteer members of search and rescue teams. A lot of the topics and stories in the book align with what we often discuss on this podcast so we are excited to dig into some details about this book and learn more about Cathalynn’s journey writing it. All this plus,  some updates on the latest events going on around new england related to hiking and search and rescue, REI’s flagship Portland, OR store is closing, a look back at a well known Mount Everest rescue, some recent hike updates from Stomp and Mrs. Stomp, and a drone is used to locate the remains of a missing person in Hampstead, NH.

This week, in an attempt to attract a younger demographic we interviewed a friend of the show, Caroline about her recent time living in Hawaii. She will break down some of the hiking activities she enjoyed during her 8 week stay in Honolulu and talk about some of her activities visiting the other Islands of Hawaii. She will also break down some of her memories of early hiking in NH and might even reveal some details about what it was like being raised by a maniac.  In addition to Caroline we have a couple of short history segments, crowds at Tuckerman Ravine, recent hikes, pop culture talk, our theory about all of us living in an AI simulation, and recent search and rescue news.

This week, we bring you a story of an unlikely friendship, and the impressive perseverance of a community of hikers that pulled together to help out a friend complete a single season winter 48. Our friends Mike and Tom join us for a segment discussing their approach to completing one of the more difficult list pursuits in the White Mountains - hiking the entire 4000 Footer list over the winter season. I got a chance to talk to Mike and Tom about their friendship, the planning that goes into a single season winter list, the support they received from all their new friends, old friends and even some strangers. I had a great time speaking with these two gentlemen and I think the you’ll all enjoy it as well. All this and some Mount Washington History, pop culture talk, planning for a backpacking trip in Yosemite National Park and a segment about the history of Limmer Boots, a legendary local gear company out of Intervale, NH.

We will revisit our advice on all the trail systems in and around franconia ridge. We will also give our tips on safety considering this is the busiest part of NH for search and rescue calls. Also we are going to revisit the Michael Miller Search and Rescue from 1983 on Franconia, we recently picked up the Appalachia accident report from Summer 1984 so we will break down the search day by day and ask Stomp to give his perspective. We will break it down for those of you thinking about exploring something other than a 4000 foot peak and I’ll do my best to sell you on why I think this list is actually better than the 4000 footer list.
