Welcome to the Sounds Like a Search and Rescue Podcast! Also known as SLASR. Join an experienced search and rescue volunteer and his friend as they discuss all things related to hiking and search and rescue in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.  This week we enter fall and it is foliage season. Stomp is going to give everyone a refresh on his fall foliage tips for October as we enter what better be a spectacular leaf peeping season given how much rain we’ve received. We’ll have the trails, the drives and the secret spots to check out to avoid the crowds and find the views. All this plus a Xylo the cat update, a History segment, a mystery segment and a hiking drama segment - For history we learn about Benjamin Ball of Ball Crag fame on Mount Washington, for mystery we learn about the strange disappearance of Kevin Race on Mount Washington and for hiking drama we discuss the 32 Feet Up family who are currently hiking the AT. But wait there's more - Taylor Swift breaks the NFL, The Bachelor is letting elderly people compete, and recent search and rescue news.

Moose has almost 40 years of experience in outdoor education and currently works for NatureBridge in Yosemite National Park as a Senior Projects Director helping to plan and design the National Environmental Science Center. Moose  has traveled all over the world as a trainer and is going to share his experiences in Swift Water Rescue, Family Liaison training and a variety of other topics so get ready for a fascinating discussion. Like our own beloved NH, hikers in the Adirondacks pursue their own version of a 4000 footer list, in season 1 of James’s podcast he unwinds the story of his completion of the ADK 4000 footers and has since gone on to cover seasons focused on winter hiking, backpacking and some of the lower peaks in the ADK. James is a NY licensed guide for hiking and camping and also works in the film and television industry. We are excited to learn more about the ADK’s and about his podcast.  Welcome to episode 114 of the sounds like a search and rescue podcast, we are a podcast about hiking and search and rescue in the white mountains. We also spend a lot of time talking about history, trail maintenance and forest management. This week we have a great guest joining us  - Dave Govatski is the co curator of the White Mountains museum at Plymouth State University, he is a US forest Service employee, a volunteer trail maintainer, and an expert in old growth forests. David was kind enough to sit down with us on a wide ranging discussion where we touched on many topics including his involvement in the 1967 cog Railway accident, his advice on where to local old growth forest in the White Mountains, his experience in the forest service, the weeks act and a slew of other topics. All this plus recent hikes on Madison, Adams, and Acteon ridge plus recent search and rescue news included a near tragedy on Cannon Mountain
