Ever feel good about how your life was going…and then you get a look at how someone else’s life is going and start second-guessing everything? Maybe I should be farther along or have achieved that or invested in this. It’s natural and normal for us to map what should do by looking at what others are doing. But it’s not always easy to know who to look at or take cues from. Sometimes we find ourselves chasing or feeling anxious about things that, when we stop and think about it, have little to do with what we truly value or who we ultimately want to be. Why does this happen? Can you keep from doing it? And how do you get back on track once you drift of course?

Obviously we all have favorites—a favorite ice cream, sports team, or streaming show. And we LOVE talking about them. There’s nothing better than finding out someone loves what you love (or hates what you hate). It’s natural to like some things more than others. But what about people? Most of us have a certain people we look up to. And if we’re honest, maybe there’s a few we look down on. Maybe it’s a specific person, or type of person, or entire group of people. Is that ok? Because—It’s hard not to play favorites. And if you’ve ever been overlooked, ignored, stigmatized, or ostracized—you know it stings to realize you didn’t make the cut. This was something Jesus talked a lot about. Why was He so passionate about it? What did he expect His followers to do about it? And why?

We all have moments where we learn something that shifts our perspective. Maybe it was an inconvenient truth, an inspiring story, or a profound observation. And now that you know it, you can’t unknow it. Maybe you feel like you should do something about it. But what? Sure, you could get started, but how do you know you’re doing the absolute best thing. You just need to know a bit more—just a few more searches, articles, and experts—and THEN you’ll be ready to act. Besides, you’ve already done the most important thing—you raised awareness. But is just being aware getting you anywhere? What would it take to actually make a difference?

We all like the idea of a stress-free existence. Wouldn’t it be great if every ounce of anxiety just suddenly evaporated? If God really loved you, isn’t that what He’d do? What if that’s not the goal though? What if God doesn’t want us to get rid of it, but to grow through it? What if you didn’t have to fall apart under pressure? What if you could persevere? What if your setbacks could build you instead of break you? How would that even work?
