In this episode, Bryan and I SPEAK about the importance of visual representation and LGBTQI inclusion in today’s classrooms, and how Miss Gina Tonic came to be. Bryan shares his experiences as Miss Gina Tonic and how important she is to not only himself, but as a beautiful representation to show others it’s okay to be colorful, proud, and to be yourself.
Bryan Bone is a dedicated Richmond high school art teacher and a proud “out” role model to his students. He volunteers tirelessly with his school and the school district to support safe inclusive opportunities for Richmond’s LGBTQ+ youth and allies. Though early in his career he faced vicious homophobic harassment and bullying, Bryan came out to support his LGBTQ+ students. He vowed to himself to be the positive queer role model he never had in high school. As a result, he has forged strong long lasting positive relationships with his students and their families. Bryan also volunteers as the SOGI teacher lead for his school and acts as a mentor to his colleagues through collaboration and supporting professional development.
Bryan was instrumental to convincing the Richmond School Board to finally join the Vancouver Pride Parade. In 2018 his efforts were finally rewarded by the Richmond School Board’s first entry into the Parade.
As the drag performer Miss Gina Tonic, Bryan strives to celebrate gender expression and sexual diversity in a positive light. He has been an inspiring, positive fixture of Vancouver’s nightlife in and out of drag for many years. He is proud to celebrate his colourful glamorous drag artistry openly with all, including through all ages events and by presenting Drag Queen Storytime readings for children.
