Ladybird is a 2017 film set in 2002, where an artistically inclined seventeen-year-old girl "Ladybird" comes of age in Sacramento, California. Welcome back Reel Friends! We're kicking off November with an absolute masterpiece of a film. At the end of our last spooky episode of the season, our hosts Alex and Walker returned to their run of the mill wheel and were gifted the category of Movies Based On Real Events. Not too long ago, the boys did an episode on biopics. Keeping that in mind, they wanted a movie that focused more on an event, as opposed to one singular person. This lead our hosts to choose the 2015 Best Picture winner, Spotlight. "In 2001, editor Marty Baron of The Boston Globe assigns a team of journalists to investigate allegations against John Geoghan, an unfrocked priest accused of molesting more than 80 boys. Led by editor Walter "Robby" Robinson (Michael Keaton), reporters Michael Rezendes (Mark Ruffalo), Matt Carroll and Sacha Pfeiffer interview victims and try to unseal sensitive documents. Welcome back Reel Friends! A bittersweet episode this week, as we are finishing our Spooky Month categories this week! We've had loads of fun getting these Halloween specials together for you, and your hosts hit it out of the park with this week's choice. Alex and Walker were given the category of Foreign Horror. This was a category made for our resident horror buff Alex, and he had quite the list for the two of them to choose from. Eventually the two landed on the 1999 Japanese film Audition. "This disturbing Japanese thriller follows Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi), a widower who decides to start dating again. Aided by a film-producer friend (Jun Kunimura), Aoyama uses auditions for a fake production to function as a dating service. When Aoyama becomes intrigued by the withdrawn, gorgeous Asami (Eihi Shiina), they begin a relationship. However, he begins to realize that Asami isn't as reserved as she appears to be, leading to gradually increased tension and a harrowing climax." Want to know more? The duo decided to stay away from original scores, and focus on movies that utilized songs to further the plot of their story. After some great mentions, Alex's pick of O Brother, Where Art Thou? was ultimately chosen. "Ulysses Everett McGill (George Clooney) is having difficulty adjusting to his hard-labor sentence in Mississippi. He scams his way off the chain gang with simple Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson) and maladjusted Pete (John Turturro), then the trio sets out to pursue freedom and the promise of a fortune in buried treasure. With nothing to lose and still in shackles, their hasty run takes them on an incredible journey of awesome experiences and colorful characters." This Coen brother film is a wonderful tale, resembling the story of Homer's The Odyssey. Since they already have an entire category dedicated to Disney films already, our hosts chose to steer away from those and try to think of something a bit more out of the box. This lead Alex to suggesting Princess Mononoke. This film was released in 1997, directed by the famous Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli.
