The spirit of adventure and unity was in full swing as students from Pace College, Moletsane High, and Afrika Tikkun, alongside their cycling buddies from Torah Academy Boys High, embarked on the exhilarating 2024 Cycalive Ride 2 Durban. This annual event saw these young cyclists pedal an impressive 700km from Johannesburg to Durban, fostering camaraderie and celebrating South Africa’s rich cultural diversity

Meet Jodie van der Walt, an exceptional 15-year-old athlete whose passion and dedication to martial arts are making waves not just locally but soon on an international stage.

Jodie was born in 2009 and raised in the scenic town of Melkbos. From a very young age, she has been drawn to extreme sports. By the age of three, she was already surfing, diving, and boating. Her adventurous spirit led her to become a certified Open Water 1 scuba diver at just 14, and she has completed two tandem skydives, showcasing her fearless nature and love for adrenaline-pumping activities.

Sportlight Women Interview: SA Rock Climber Lauren Mukheibir Sets Heart on ‘Road to the Paris’

Lauren has been training for the past 22 months to represent SA at the Paris Olympics. She is the reigning female African Champion representing South Africa in Sport Climbing and has been doing the sport for the past 14 years.

 

Drawing on that experience, Lauren is gearing up for an exciting Olympics. Like many athletes in South Africa, self-funding her way to the Olympics is challenging. She, too, has turned to crowdfunding in the hopes of raising enough to represent South Africa.

The award-winning Tangible Africa has lived up to its name by introducing the concept of tangible coding to various African, European, and Asian countries. Now they are ready to take on the world with their new app called Speed Stars. Tangible Africa is an engagement project of Nelson Mandela University Computing

Sciences Department and the Leva Foundation, both based in Gqeberha in South Africa. Very little online resources are needed to play tangible coding games, by making use of Tangible Africa’s flagship applications, RANGERS and BOATS – and now also Speed Stars.

Sportlight weekend warrior: Young rower to compete an international stage U19 World Rowing Championships in St Catharine's, Canada, from 18-25 August 2024 

St Mary's School Grade 12 pupil Ziyanda has earned herself a chance to represent the country and compete on an international stage U19 World Rowing Championships in St Catharine's, Canada, from 18-25 August 2024,

Ziyanda’s rowing journey began 5 years ago, and she had no idea the sport would become a large part of her life. In these subsequent years, she has been an integral part of the St Mary's Rowing Club. Ziyanda says “it’s been an honour and a privilege to have been part of a fantastic group of fun-loving, driven, supportive and dedicated rowers at St Mary's.”

In her years in the sport, she was selected for the 2022 South African Schools Rowing Union U16 Development Tour to the UK. 2023 she earned a spot on the Gauteng Provincial Squad. Has also represented South Africa at the 2023 African Beach Games in Tunisia, in the Beach Sprints event the team obtained a Silver medal in the Women's Double.
