GUEST on the line: Racing legend - Schalk Burger

 

He grew up in the back seat of his father’s rally car. Raised in a motorsports family, it was only normal to see Schalk Buger on the start line of the Dakar. After years competing in the South-African rally championship he switched to off-road races. A crash during the Botswana 1000 could have cost him dearly. An injury to his hand forced him to take a one year break enabling him to come and visit the Dakar in Peru back in 2017. That’s when he saw the size of the event and realized he wasn’t quite ready for it. The initial goal was to take part in 2020 but an accident pushed back that objective. For his first Dakar, the South-African businessman will have his usual co-driver Henk Janse Van Vuuren at his side.

Coach Lindsey Parry is one of South Africa’s most well-known running coaches and has a passion for high-performance sport. He is the official Comrades Marathon coach and a Runner’s World columnist – and has led many top athletes to greatness.

 

One such athlete is the 2015 Comrades Marathon and Two Oceans Marathon winner, Caroline Wöstmann. She said the following about Coach Parry:

“Lindsey Parry has helped me transform my running career. He takes the time to tailor my running programme to meet my individual needs by understanding my strengths and development areas. Through his coaching, I was able to improve my marathon time from 2 hours and 53 minutes to 2 hours and 44 minutes and I hope to continue improving under his guidance in the future.”

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

GUEST on the line: Rynfield resident and professional golfer- Nicole Garcia

Rynfield resident and professional golfer Nicole Garcia (30) started playing golf at the age of 16 after realising her love for the sport when her mum took her for a lesson with Kerry van Welsen at the Benoni Lake Club.

“Golf is my job and it’s what I love, and travelling the world for my livelihood isn’t such a bad way to live,” she said.

“I enjoy it because it’s only you against the golf course. Even though this life can be hard, it also teaches you how to be strong.

“It’s only you out there; no one else can influence how you play.”

Matriculating in 2008 from St Dominic’s Catholic School for Girls in Boksburg, this professional had already been experiencing her love of golf and continued rising, reaching pro status in 2014, with many memorable moments along the way.

“I will never forget when I won the First Stage Q School in Morocco. I had lost my playing status in my rookie year and needed to re-qualify to get back onto the tour and then won the first stage by 13 shots and came second in the final stage,” she said.

Garcia also fondly remembers her first US Open.

 

GUEST: Barbara Manning -the Secretary of South African Archery Association 

 

Former archery player, Barbara Manning, is the first South African woman to be elected as one of the Federation of African Archery council members. Manning started her archery career in 1969 and has represented South Africa at several international competitions.

 

Following her husband’s death in 1997, she retired from shooting and took over an administrative role as means of giving back to the sport. In 2002, she was elected as the Secretary of South African Archery Association and was responsible for turning the federation into a professionally run body. She was also instrumental in setting up the High Performance for Target Archery in the country. From the inception of the Performance Squad to the archers competing in international competitions, Manning managed this squad.

 

GUEST: Cricket South Africa Women's Under-19 and Women's National Academy coach- Dinesha Devnarain

 

Cricket SA (CSA) has confirmed the inbound tour of the West Indies against the Proteas in four Women’s One-Day Internationals (ODI) starting this month.

The series, which will also feature a warm-up match, will be played between January 25 and February 6. All the matches will be played in a biosecure environment (BSE) at the Wanderers Stadium at the request of Cricket West Indies (CWI).

CSA said the team would be housed in a nearby hotel which has been secured for exclusive use because of the pandemic.

The Wanderers Club in Illovo will launch a new variation to Badminton on 20th November 2021. AirBadminton, developed by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), is designed to create an opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to participate in outdoor sports. It can be played on different surfaces including hard surfaces, grass and sand, and in parks, gardens, streets, playgrounds and beaches. It is already being played around the world.

 

AirBadminton can be played by anyone, regardless of age, ability and level of experience. It is also an inclusive sport for people with disabilities and para-badminton players.

Behind the humble Zimbabwean’s friendly demeanour lies a steely determination that has seen him conquer some of the most gruelling endurance events in sport.

 

He has earned four Comrades Marathon medals and two Two Oceans Marathon medals to date. On Sunday, 21 November 2021, Kura took it up a notch.After 14-gruelling hours swimming 3.8 km, cycling 180 km, and running a full marathon, Kura can now claim the Ironman title.
