On Saturday, 10 October, a group of 18 ordinary South Africans will set off on an extraordinary adventure: They will run 1,500km from Johannesburg to Cape Town to raise funds for disadvantaged learners.

Their 24-hour relay run will take them from Johannesburg, and through Kroonstad, Bloemfontein, Colesberg, Victoria West, Sutherland and Ceres, before reaching Cape Town on 17 October. Then, prove how truly MAD they are, they will participate in the Cape Town Virtual Half Marathon on 18 October.

In fact, the person of solid virtues who can be admired for something more substantial than his well-knownness often proves to be the unsung hero. Such is the dilemma of the development coach – working tirelessly in the township, in a thankless, unglamorous and unpublicised job!

Durban will become the first South African city to host the event after it enjoyed a commanding 90 votes to 39 victory over its German opponent.

The 2023 World Table Tennis Championships will also be the first to take place in Africa since Cairo played host in 1939.

Hayley Nixon still finds it hard to believe she has just won the coveted Athlete of the Year award at the Momentum gsports Awards ceremony.

“It’s so awesome. It was amazing just to be nominated, and then to make the top-three finalists in of the category, against other phenomenal athletes, was mind-blowing,” she said.

“This sport, that is not mainstream; our chances were limited. I was honored to be recognized by the female sports community.”
