Notre Dame women’s basketball is ACC regular season champion, as the Irish posted a tight 68-65 win at Louisville Sunday to finish the season at 24-and-4, 15-and-3 in Conference play. The title carries the number one seed in this week’s ACC Tournament in Greensboro, North Carolina, where Notre Dame plays Friday against the winner of Thursday’s NC State-Syracuse matchup.

Irish hockey had a good weekend as well, earning three points from two games at fourth ranked Michigan, including a 2-1 overtime win Saturday night to earn the number four seed in the Big Ten Tournament, and a chance to host a best of three series against Michigan State this weekend. Darin Pritchitt will call the action starting Friday night at 7 on Quality Rock Z 94.3. Saturday’s game is at 4:30, and if necessary, game three is Sunday at 6.

Coach Mike Brey’s home finale after 23 seasons with Notre Dame men’s basketball is Wednesday night against Pitt at Purcell Pavilion. Brey is stepping down, but says he hopes to be coaching again somewhere, soon. The Irish will finish a disappointing season in the ACC Tournament next week, after closing the regular season Saturday at Clemson.

Purdue has been ranked higher than Indiana all season long, but the Hoosiers swept the season series after Saturday’s 79-71 win in West Lafayette. The 17th ranked Hoosiers host Iowa Tuesday, the 5th ranked Boilers are at Wisconsin Thursday.

Spring training games got underway over the weekend in Florida and Arizona, as the Cubs and White Sox prepare for regular season openers March 30th. Both teams hope to improve from disappointing seasons last year. Sunday, the Cubs lost to the Dodgers 9-to-4, and the White Sox fell to the Angles 7-nothing.

In the NBA: the Bulls downed the Washington Wizards in Chicago Sunday, 102-82.

The Notre Dame women started slow last night at Purcell Pavilion against Georgia Tech, going down 8-nothing early. But the Irish dominated the rest of the way in a 76-53 win. Olivia Miles led a balanced attack with 13 points, with four more scoring in double figures as well. Now 23-and-4 overall, 10th ranked Notre Dame remains tied atop the ACC with 11th ranked Duke, which downed North Carolina State in Durham, 77-62. The Irish close the regular season Sunday at Louisville, a noon tipoff on Live 99.9.

Meanwhile, the Irish men are playing out a disappointing season as coach Mike Brey prepares to step down after 23 seasons. Notre Dame is at Wake Forest Saturday night at 7 here on Sports Radio 960 WSBT, with Brey’s home finale this coming Wednesday against Duke. The Irish will almost certainly end their season in the ACC Tournament the following week.

Irish athletic director Jack Swarbrick says he expects Notre Dame to remain independent in football for the foreseeable future. In a live chat with university relations Thursday, Swarbrick stuck to what he’s said before: as long as the Irish have fair access to the college football playoff, have a committed TV partner, and can schedule well enough to be nationally competitive, it makes sense to remain independent. Swarbrick said he does not expect another potential realignment of college conferences to affect those factors.

NBA: Boston downed the Indiana Pacers in Indy, 142-138. The Detroit Pistons lost at Orlando, 108-106. The Chicago Bulls host the Brooklyn Nets tonight at the United Center.

North Carolina survives to keep its NCAA Tournament hopes alive, while the Irish play out a season that will almost certainly end in the ACC Tournament, and end Mike Brey’s 23 year career at Notre Dame. Tonight at 6:00, the 10th ranked Irish women take on Georgia Tech at Purcell Pavilion, looking to stay atop the ACC standings. At 13-and-3, 22-and-4 overall, the Irish are tied with Duke, as the 11th ranked Blue Devils host North Carolina State tonight. The NBA returns from its All-Star break tonight, with the Chicago Bulls hosting the Brooklyn Nets at the United Center, the Indiana Pacers at home against the Boston Celtics, and the Detroit Pistons taking on the Magic in Orlando. The Bulls and Pacers are both just outside looking in in the playoff standings. Each needs to make up a couple or three games down the stretch to get in. The Pistons are last in the East, 13 games behind tenth place and the last playoff berth.

In hockey, the Chicago Blackhawks won both ends of a back to back after last night’s 4-to-3 win over the Stars in Dallas. They beat Las Vegas in a shootout in Chicago Tuesday, 3-to-2. The Detroit Pistons are at home tonight against the New York Rangers.
