In their first home game since last week’s campus shooting spree that killed three students and wounded five more, the Michigan State Spartans and an emotional crowd dominated most of the game in an 80-to-65 win over the 17th ranked Indiana Hoosiers. Indiana went out to an early nine point lead, but it was pretty much all Spartans after that. Senior guard Tyson Walker led the Spartans with 23 points as Michigan State moves to 17-and-10 on the season. Indiana falls to 19-and-9. The Hoosiers face leading rival number 5 Purdue Saturday in West Lafayette. Michigan State plays at Iowa Saturday.

Only two home games left for Mike Brey as Notre Dame’s season winds down, and Brey prepares to leave after 23 seasons. The 10-and-17 Irish host the North Carolina Tar Heels tonight in at late start at Purcell Pavilion. Tony Simeone calls the game starting at 8:30 for a nine o’clock tipoff here on Sports Radio 960 AM WSBT. Brey’s home finale will be March 1st against Pitt.

The Irish women are approaching the end of their regular season, but Coach Niele Ivey’s team is virtually assured of hosting NCAA first and second round games following the ACC Tournament. 10th ranked Notre Dame hosts Georgia Tech Thursday at 6pm, before ending the regular season Sunday at Louisville. Sean Stires will call both games for you on Live 99-9.

The Chicago Cubs begin spring training with pitcher Adbert Alzolay pretty firmly slotted for a role as a multi-inning reliever. He tells MLB.com he’s ready to embrace that role after spending much of last season recovering from a right shoulder injury. The Cubs will open the season at home March 30th against the Milwaukee Brewers.

In hockey, the Blackhawks and Las Vegas Knights went to a shootout in Chicago, the Blakhawks winning 3-to-2. The Detroit Redwings won at Washington, 3-to-1.

The NBA season resumes Thursday following the All-Star break, with the Chicago Bulls at home on Friday against Brooklyn. The Indiana Pacers host Boston Thursday night in Indy.

Notre Dame football coach Marcus Freeman says there was never any reluctance to pay a buyout to get a coach they wanted. He admitted Monday that Utah’s Andy Ludwig was his top candidate for offensive coordinator when he was seen with Freeman at an Irish hockey game. Freeman says Ludwig made a decision he thought was best for him and his family, and the Irish moved on. Tight ends coach Gerad Parker was introduced Monday as the new offensive coordinator.

In Indianapolis, new Colts coach Shane Steichen is filling out his staff, with reports that a deal is being fnalized to bring in former Colts assistant Jim Bob Cooter as offensive coordinator. He was reportedly also in the mix for the same job with the Carolina Panthers under former Colts coach Frank Reich. As passing game coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars last season, Cooter got some of the credit for quarterback Trevor Lawrence’s big improvement. The Colts will need that expertise to develop a young quarterback, presumably to be picked in the April draft.

Notre Dame women’s basketball holds at number ten in this week’s AP Women’s poll. The 22-and-4 Irish have two regular season games remaining: Thursday at home against Georgia Tech, and Sunday at Louisville, before the ACC Tournament and an expected host berth for the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament. The Indiana Hoosiers come in at number two this week, and South Carolina remains at the top of the women’s poll.

In Big Ten men’s action, the Purdue Boilermakers are down to 5th in the new AP poll released Monday, after several recent losses. The Indiana Hoosiers fell three spots to 17th, ahead of tonight’s game at Michigan State. The Hoosiers are a three point underdog as the Spartans play their first home game since last week’s campus shooting spree that killed three students and wounded five others.

New Notre Dame offensive coordinator Gerad Parker makes his first public appearance today at a late morning press conference with head coach Marcus Freeman. Parker moves up from tight ends coach after a very public recruiting of Utah offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig did not work out. Spring drills begin next month.

A blowout win for 10th ranked Notre Dame women’s basketball Sunday at Pittsburgh. Maddy Westbeld and Sonia Citron led the way with 13 points each for the team lead in a balanced attack in Notre Dame’s 83-43 win. Just two regular season games remain now, with Georgia Tech at Purcell Pavilion Thursday night, and the season finale at Louisville this Sunday.

The Irish men lost yet another heartbreaker Saturday, this time by just two points at 7th ranked Virginia. Notre Dame hosts North Carolina Wednesday here on Sports Radio 960 WSBT.

In the Big Ten Sunday, 3rd ranked Purdue dominated Ohio State in West Lafayette, 82-55. On Saturday, 14th ranked Indiana edged Illinois in Bloomington, 71-68, and Michigan State fell short at Michigan, 84-72, in the Spartans first game since the campus shootings last Monday that killed three and wounded five. Indiana plays at Michigan State tomorrow night.

After finishing the regular season with an even record of 14-14-and-4, Notre Dame hockey enters Big Ten tournament play this weekend with a best of three series at Michigan. Darin Pritchitt will call the games Friday, Saturday, and if necessary, Sunday on Quality Rock Z 94-3.

In the NHL: the Blackhawks beat the Toronto Maple Leafs in Chicago, 5-to-3. The Detroit Redwings are at Washington tonight.
