Seventh ranked Notre Dame women’s basketball dominated the game start to finish against Wake Forest last night at Purcell Pavilion. Maddy Westbeld tied her career high with 25 points in an 86-47 win, improving the season record to 13-and-2, 4-and-1 in ACC play. A visit to Syracuse is on tap this Sunday for the Irish women, a 2:00pm tipoff on sister station Live 99-9.

Meanwhile, the Irish men look to build on their first conference win of the season when they also play at Syracuse this weekend. Notre Dame and the Orange tip off at 7 Saturday night, with Tony Simeone on the call starting at 6:30. Because of NFL playoff coverage on 960 WSBT, Saturday’s game will be heard on sister station 96-1 the Ton.

NFL playoffs dominate our airwaves this weekend on Sports Radio 960 WSBT, with Westwood One coverage of all six Wild Card Weekend games. It all starts tomorrow at 4:30 with the Seattle Seahawks at San Francisco to play the 49ers, followed by the LA Chargers in Jacksonville at 8:15. Sunday’s coverage leads off at 1:00 with the Miami Dolphins against the Bills in Buffalo. The New York Giants face the Vikings in Minnesota at 4:30, and the Baltimore Ravens are in Cincinnati against the Bengals at 8:15. The Monday night game is the Dallas Cowboys at Tampa Bay, also at 8:15.

Second year coach Mike Woodson says the Indiana Hoosiers failed to compete in last night’s 85-66 loss at Penn State. The loss sent the Hoosiers to 1-and-4 in Big Ten play, 8-and-6 overall, and in danger of missing the NCAA Tournament this year if they don’t turn things around. Woodson says the absence of key players Race Thompson and Xavier Johnson was no excuse for a poor overall performance. The Hoosiers next play Saturday at home in Bloomington against 18th ranked Wisconsin.

Tonight in the Big Ten, Michigan plays at Iowa at 7 on ESPN2, and Ohio State hosts Minnesota at 6:30 on FS1. Tomorrow night, 4th ranked Purdue hosts Nebraska in West Lafayette on the Big Ten Network, and Michigan State is at Illinois on FS1.

Notre Dame women’s basketball gets back on the court tonight at Purcell Pavilion, hosting Wake Forest. The Irish took their first conference loss of the season last Sunday at North Carolina, 60-to-50, to fall the 12-and-2 on the season. They also lost three spots in this week’s AP national poll. In the NBA: the Chicago Bulls lost on a last second three pointer in Washington. Wizards 100, Bulls 97. In New York, the Knicks downed the Indiana Pacers 119-113. And in Detroit, the Pistons beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 135-118.

Hockey tonight includes the Chicago Blackhawks at home against the Colorado Avalanche, an 8:30 eastern time game on NBC Sports Chicago. The Detroit Redwings host the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight at 7 on ESPN.

This season’s Notre Dame men’s basketball team has blown some late leads while losing their first five conference games, but playing from behind last night, the Irish found a way to pull out an overtime over Georgia Tech at Purcell Pavilion. Dane Goodwin hit a key three-pointer, and Nate Laszewski hit a couple of key free throws as the Irish pulled out a 73-72 decision. Now 9-and-8, 1-and-5 in ACC play, the Irish head to Syracuse this Saturday for a 7pm tipoff. That game will be heard on our sister station 96.1 the Ton, because of NFL playoff coverage here on Sports Radio 960 WSBT.

No playoffs for the Chicago Bears this year, but with a 3-and-14 record, the Bears wind up with the number one draft position, and a ton of cap space this off season. With Justin Fields’ development at quarterback, the Bears are in position to put some weapons around him through the draft and/or trades, and Bears fans have something to be excited about for coming years. The Bears could draft a defensive stopper with the top pick, or trade it to teams looking for a quarterback for multiple picks further down the draft.

In the NBA: the Chicago Bulls play at Washington tonight, while the Indiana Pacers are in New York against the Knicks. The Detroit Pistons lost at Philadelphia last night, 147-116, and they play again tonight at home against Minnesota.

Hockey: the Redwings are at home in Detroit tonight against Winnipeg. The Chicago Blackhawks are at home tomorrow night against Colorado.

College football’s national title goes to the Georgia Bulldogs for the second straight year. Georgia powered out to a 24-to-7 early lead, and the rout was on as the Bulldogs humiliated TCU in Los Angeles, 65-to-7. Georgia now has back to back undefeated, national championship seasons on its resume.

Among those elected to the College Football Hall of Fame this year is a former Notre Dame linebacker with the appropriate name of Michael Stonebreaker. Stonebreaker played for the Irish from 1986-to-1990, a two time All-American, with 104 tackles in the 1988 national championship season for Notre Dame. He becomes the 55th Irish member of the College Football Hall of Fame.

Notre Dame men’s basketball looks to get off the schneid in ACC play tonight at Purcell Pavilion, as the 8-and-8 Irish take on 8-and-7 Georgia Tech. North Carolina was no fun for Notre Dame basketball over the weekend, as the men took an 81-to-64 loss to the Tar Heels Saturday, and the women had their own struggles Sunday.
The Tar Heels downed the women 60-to-50, handing them their first conference loss of the season. The Irish women are back home Thursday against Wake Forest. The men are 8-and-8, 0-and-5 in ACC play, hosting Georgia Tech tomorrow night at Purcell Pavilion on Sports Radio 960 WSBT.

Also Sunday, top ranked Purdue won at Penn State, 76-63, and number 15 Indiana lost at home to Northwestern, 84-83.

The Detroit Lions learned minutes before they took the field in Green Bay last night that they were eliminated from the playoffs with Seattle’s overtime win over the LA Rams, but still went out and knocked the Packers out the playoffs with a 20-16 win at Lambeau Field. The Bears and Colts closed disappointing seasons with losses Sunday afternoon, the Bears to Minnesota, 29-13, the Colts giving up a touchdown and two point conversion in the final minute to fall to Houston 32-31. The Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles earned first round playoff byes, everybody else in the playoffs will play this coming weekend.

College football’s national championship is set to be played tonight in Glendale, Arizona, as the defending champion Georgia Bulldogs face the TCU Horned Frogs. Kickoff is at 7:30 on Sports Radio 960 AM WSBT.

Irish hockey split a pair of games at Wisconsin over the weekend, losing Friday night 2-noothing, winning Saturday 6-to-4. The Irish host Minnesota this Friday and Saturday at the Compton Family Ice Arena, live coverage on Quality Rock Z 94-3.

And congratulations are in order for Mishawaka Cavemen wrestling, winners of the Indiana state 3A title Saturday over Columbus East.
