The "Anything But Deer Hunting" series is an attempt for us to continue our love for the outdoors by learning about other outdoor activities in the hunting and fishing space. On this episode, we talk with Nate Thomas, one of the hosts of the Missouri Woods & Water podcast, about predator hunting. Specifically coyote hunting.
Nate shares when he was introduced to coyote hunting, the strategy involved in this style of hunting, and the gear you might need before your first hunt. Nate also discusses the coyotes nose and how it is undefeated in the field, specific firearms and optics needs, and why hunting coyotes ranks up towards top of his favorite things to do.

You’re in for a treat this week! Shine your boots and report for duty as the guys sit down for a good talk with Glen (one N) Reich. Glen is a friend of the show that has helped the guys grow behind the scenes. But Glen has some pretty good stories to tell and one of them involves those hellacious demons we know as ticks. Glen relives his time in basic training as a private, in which he had an upclose encounter with a tick, on his private. Follow that?
Around the state there is a lot of fun spring activities in the works. Water safety council meetings, Geology days, Spring flowers, and Hatchery open houses. Paul will be on his way to Florida when the show releases for his first Osceola hunt. Navigating the swamps with gators, snakes, ticks, and more! Andrew is getting ready to head to Oklahoma in a couple weeks for some hog hunting, so gearing up for that, but not ready to go yet. Happy to announce a new partner to the program, Xvision optics. Check these guys out, and be on the look out for more content from this awesome optics company.

In this episode, Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) and Albert Tomechko (Vitalize Seed) discuss the importance of soil health and an equation that will lead to bigger deer. Albert discusses the one-two system that they offer and why their seed strategy requires less inputs. Al discusses the most overlooked aspects of soil test, and why we need to think about certain seed mixes to optimize nutrient cycling. Al and Jon discuss the mistakes of putting too much seed down and related nutrient tie up we sometimes fail to consider.
Al discusses soil and plant synergies, and why balancing carbon to nitrogen ratios are so critical to the microbial communities in our soil. Jon and Al discuss the when, why, and how to get a soil sample, to include the depth, location and reducing variables. Jon discusses using a roller crimper and balancing seeding techniques. Al discusses where he goes to get soil samples and thinks about soil from a full spectrum perspective to include mineral balancing. Al and Jon discuss thinking through crop sequencing and thinking through the next crop (i.e. corn).
Al and Jon explain what is important to consider in the fall and why carbon building is meaningful. Al discusses options to terminate cover crops in the springtime (i.e. crimper, chopper, etc.) Al discusses when he uses a heavy legume mix and what happens when we become too clover focused. Al and Jon discuss cattle and deer browse. Jon explains simple techniques to assess your soil and how compacted soils can be detrimental to food plots. Jon discusses a simple method to evaluate seed quality and how better-quality soils and plants lead to less disease.

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick is joined by host of the Pennsylvania Woodsmen Podcast, Mitchell Shirk. Together the guys unpack the unique hunting traditions of Pennsylvania, and how they also relate to many of the Northern states' big woods traditions. Mitchell also tells about bears and bear hunting, a practice that gets him very excited. And to finish off the discussion, Mitchell lays out his favorite celebration meal, and his dish to pass at the Emperor's Table. Thanks for tuning in, and enjoy this episode of Huntavore.
Mitchell Shirk says that he didn’t find podcasting, but podcasting found him. As host of the Pennsylvania Woodsman Podcast, he brings a unique skill set of hunting big woods for deer and bears with coordinated drives. These drives could be a few friends and a woodlot, to 20+ hunters over several miles. Bringing a team effort to a normally solo style of hunt. Hunting for black bear specifically becomes a huge trophy, for the fact that in a no bait state, and given the range of bears coming into range of shooter is rare. Mitchell tells the story of how his and his grandfather share getting their first bears on the same hunt. Being a novice in the kitchen, Mitchell appreciates using minimal to basic seasonings on wild game, letting the flavor of the animal come through. Mitchell is a regular contributor to the Sportsmen’ Empire network, and you can follow along with him @pennsylvaniawoodsmanpodcast on Instagram.

In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, Derek smells like beaver. He’s been busy trapping nuisance beavers on a property for the last few weeks using several 330 Conibear body traps. He talks about how he can’t use snares or a drowning rod and with trapping beaver, you have to work with what you got. Have you seen the” Zombeavers” movie?? Do you know how to check the gender of a beaver … it’s a bit of a sniff test. Why does Derek trap beaver if it’s not just for their pelts? Tune in to learn ever more exciting facts about beavers.
Brad is considering a questionable method of fleshing his whitetail deer hides. We bring up one of the biggest problems of having a big freezer full of wild game meat and debate over how long frozen meat is good for. We tease out some things to do with meat that’s been in there for a while and Derek drops his favorite beaver meat recipes. Brad bumps into a bonehead who broke into our trailer at the office and he recently competed in a PineWood Derby race with his son.
Jacob went fishing, of course, and went after trout and smallmouth bass. Bryaden got out to fish as well, and posed a question about the color of crawfish and water temperature. This is a good time to mention that we have a monster wave of new fishing gear coming to the GoWild store, from soft plastics to crankbaits to line, rods, reels and more, all just in time for spring fishing season, so gear up and get ready! We’re also loading up on all the gear you need for spring turkey hunting, including boots, camo, vests, and more.

[UNCENSORED] by GoWild kicks off your week with shameful nonsense, inappropriate convictions, and unfiltered tales from the woods, waters and whatevers. [UNCENSORED] is a behind the scenes look at our adventures, failures, wins, embarrassing moments at trade shows, hilarious tales from the warehouse, and a good rant or three about the most recent tyranny from the Dark Lord of the Sith himself.

When you meet a man named "Bobcat" you better pay attention to what he has to say. On this episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John is joined by Keith "Bobcat" Williams of A.M. Calls. Keith makes a unique type of turkey call that uses petrified wood in place of your typical slate or glass pot call. Not only is the call a beautiful piece of art, but it makes realistic turkey noises that you have to hear to believe. An added advantage to the petrified wood is that it dries quickly if it gets wet, so they can be a great option for those misty days or spring mornings of heavy dew. Keith and John discuss the whole line of A.M. Calls, including the adjustable striker Keith offers. The striker adjusts to give the calls different sounds, or simply retracted to fit in your pocket or vest easier.
In an unexpected bonus to this episode, Keith also talks about how predator numbers are affecting turkey numbers across the nation. Keith spent several years as a professional trapper (thus the nickname) back in the 80's, and talks about how the decline in fur prices also led to the decline of interest in trappers. Keith doesn't claim to be the best turkey hunter, but throughout the conversation his knowledge of woodsmanship really shines through, and you may just want to pay attention when ol Bobcat has something to say.
