Hey everyone, welcome to episode 135 of the Antler Up Podcast!
On this week's episode I was joined by Marcus Smith from Black Ovis! Most of you know Black Ovis as your one stop shop when it comes to all things hunting gear like archery equipment, boots, clothing, backpacking gear and a ton more. I had the opportunity to meet Marcus at this past year's ATA show in KY and knew I wanted to get him on the show. Well better late than ever and I had a great time talking to Marcus about a few different topics when it comes to hunting and gear!
We start out this episode with Marcus sharing his background in marketing and how being a professional skier led him to his job with Black Ovis. Marcus then talks about growing up chasing elk in UT and now his passion is bowhunting! I love these stories because you can really hear it in his voice how much this means to him. This episode wouldn’t be complete until we really got into talking about some gear. With western hunting in full swing I asked Marcus what his must have pieces of gear and more! The last bit we discuss is how the new laws in UT regarding trail cameras and how the law has altered his strategy. Enjoy today’s episode & thanks for tuning in!! ANTLER UP!!

On this episode of The Western Rookie Dan talks with Zach Schroeder, a Minnesota native who’s passion for playing football had to take a back seat to his love for the outdoors.
Zach is a 22 year old outdoorsman that grew up in the small town of Paynesville, MN. Zach has been hunting since he was 5 years old, it started with a bow for his birthday and then his first bb gun which he used to chase chipmunks with on his grandma's property. Before long he started tagging along on deer, turkey and duck hunts with his dad. Zach had a lot of success in the woods from age 11-14 and then football started and hunting got pushed aside. Zach and his buddies tried to get every bit of hunting in while they weren’t on the field but it was limited to Saturday and Sunday after games. Now that Zach is in college he decided to quit football to give himself more time to go hunting. Zach and Dan discuss the transition from sports to the outdoors and the preparation that is going into Zach’s first western hunt.

The state of Wisconsin offers an absolute plethora of opportunities for the outdoorsman. From hiking to fishing to hunting all sorts of critters, the options are vast! But did you know you can hunt elk in Wisconsin? Every year, a lucky few are fortunate enough to draw tags for Wisconsin’s small but growing elk herd, offering a rare opportunity to hunt these animals east of the Mississippi River for Wisconsin residents. But how did they get here? And what’s next for the herd?
In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman podcast, Josh talks with Joshua Spiegel, Jennifer Price Tack, Christine Anhalt-Depies of the Wisconsin DNR about Wisconsin’s elk herd. These three work to help research and manage Wisconsin’s elk herd. If you love conservation, Wisconsin, and elk, this episode is for you. Enjoy!

The week on the show the guys get to talk with Arron Bleise, host of The Fall Podcast about his two year quest after a buck nicknamed "Super Six". Some of our listeners may already know about this deer and story, but we thought the story about the hunt and recovery of Arron's deer was too good not to do another. This hunt and recovery is the epitome of seeing a hunt all the way through. Many people who shoot and injure a deer give up trying to recover it way too easily, and Arron's story is a good example of perseverance and doing everything in your power to recover the deer you shot. This story is full of ups and downs as well as some great learning points for all of us. Thanks to Arron for coming on with us and telling the story of this hunt again. Be sure to check out Arron's episode about it as well as his show with Working Class Bowhunter at the links below.

Last weekend John had the honor of leading a session at the National Wild Turkey Federation's deer conference in Oklahoma City. The conference was intended to help bring in and educate new hunters from across the state, and the turnout was very encouraging for the future of hunting! John decided why stop at only those who could attend though, so this week's episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors podcast is all about gear. John will be going over all the essential gear a person needs to get out in the woods and confidently harvest a deer. For the non beginner listeners, this episode still has something for you. After John goes through the essentials, he runs down his entire gear list for the upcoming season. Bow, rifle, broadheads, binoculars, knife, treestands, popup blinds, and everything in between, he talks about why he bought it and if he would buy it again.
For John's talk, he broke the gear into three categories: Essential, Recommended, and nice to have. John is a firm believer that gear should never be the reason a person chooses not to hunt, and most people probably don't need nearly as much gear as television shows or advertisements would lead them to believe. Are binoculars nice to have, sure, but are they really essential? Listen to this week's podcast to hear John's take on binoculars and loads of other gear.

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman we are chatting with Phil Holcombe about the Pennsylvania Bowhunters Festival. Phil is now the third generation leading with his team of volunteers to make this event happen annually. It is the oldest gathering of bowhunters in the world! It's an opportunity for fellowship, comradery, archery shooting, networking, and just pure bowhunting fun!
Phil shares with us some of the history of the festival as it began with his Grandfather and Great Uncles over 60 years ago in Forksville, PA. One of the most memorable parts of this shoot is the novelty running deer shoot, and Phil discusses the engineering occured to develop this attractive target! There are also numerous courses throughout the fairgrounds that make the event too big to handle in a single day. Not to mention the food and vendors that are present every year. This event is held annually in September and is something that is fun for the whole family. Tune in to hear all about it, and check out pabowhunters.com for more information about the event and how you can join this year!
