Kerry joined me at the fantastic Coffee Talk in Chandler to discuss the importance of pushing boundries, finding the art that suits your aesthetic, and why being an expert can ruin your writing.

  • Episode 19: Crystal Cruz

Circus artist Crystal Cruz has proven her fearlessness by dangling from hights, playing with fire, and laying on beds of nails. But can she withstand an hour of conversation with a stuttering ginger boy? Also yes.

She chatted with me downtown at The Coronado, sharing her thoughts on learning from your peers, balancing your strengths, and how boring it is to just show your tits.

Crystal is hosting her annual Stilt Camping Retreat in Flagstaff August 4-6. If you sign up here by July 31 you will receive 40% OFF.

More details on that and any other upcoming projects and classes can be found at houseofcirque.com

  • Episode 18: Will Hightower

Actor, instructor, and arts advocate Will Hightower invited me to his home base at Urban Bean; just a couple of average-looking white guys who used to act more trying to support the arts.

We had a great chat where we discussed the the artist's place in the community, mental illness in the arts, and why we need to stop looking for the next Emma Stone.

You can learn more about Will's advocacy programs, including how to sign up for the Artist I.D. program (for $15 a year!) at theatrethinktank.org

Will is also supporting Stray Cat Theatre's Roast of Ron May on Saturday, August 5. Tickets start at $20, and festivities run all night, check out details at straycattheatre.org

  • Episode 17: Sydney Jackson

Movement artist Sydney Jackson joined me at the Chop Shop in Tempe where I try to make her feel comfortable by bringing up a bunch of stuff she doesn't remember. But then she talks to me about how we put value on ourselves as artists, why she likes to avoid as many descriptors as she can, and why a good teacher doesn't necessarily need to be a good performer.

Sydney will be performing with the BlakTina Festival, which runs ONE NIGHT ONLY, Saturday July 22 at 7:30 at Black Theatre Troupe. Tickets are 17.90, available through the Facebook event

You can also see Sydney with the Humanity 101 Players in August through Nuebox and the Mesa Arts Center. They have a workshop on Tuesday, August 1 at 6:30 and a Work In Progress Show on Tuesday, August 8 at 6:30, both at the Mesa Arts Center. More information on those at nuebox.org
Look out for more details later on in the year for the class Sydney will be teaching through MAC as well
