Exceptional painter Rachel Bess said she started off painting "pale, skinny goth girls and their sadness." Incidentally, that is also the name of my upcoming album.
Rachel invited me into her awesome home studio to talk about accepting sacrifices that come with an artist's life, the continuous struggle of assigning value to your work, and the sweet relief of the table saw.
You can find Rachel's work @rachelbessart on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, as well as her website rachelbess.com and the Lisa Sette Gallery in Phoenix. Follow her for more details about her upcoming show at the Mesa Arts Center in April.

Nate Zeune and Lou Resnick from The Sink or Swim are my guests this week! Spoiler alert: Swim.
The fellas joined me at Cartel Coffee Lab to talk about getting your name out whether you have a gig or not, making an album centered around a mood, and the legend of Arizona's first Parkour Band.
The Sink or Swim are releasing their five-song album Oasis Unknown with a massive album release party at Crescent Ballroom on Jan 20 at 7:00 pm. Tickets only $10!
I've listened to the album. It's good.

I first saw improvisor Clifton Gray performing a long-form solo show. Which means just like it used to say on my dating profile, he's used to being all alone, figuring things out as he goes.
Clifton met me at Urban Beans to talk about having the freedom to be yourself onstage, why some styles work better than others, and how you end up onstage with a tuba and a pie.
If you are curious about long-form improv, The Torch Theatre hosts a free drop-in class on the first Saturday of every month where you can test the waters, followed by an open play session called Bingo Jam. The next one is January 6, class at 2:30, sign up for the jam at 6:30, more details at thetorchtheatre.com.
If you are an improvisor looking to get onstage, Cagematch is offered every Saturday night at 10PM. Learn more details and sign up here.

Cellist and educator Wesley Skinner regularly puts together programs like "Bach and baklava" and "Bach and guac." I hope he gets back to me about my "Bach with Glocks" idea to bring classical music to shooting ranges.
We went to Cornish Pasty to discuss the need for a strong repertoire, dealing with the nerves of playing solo, and why he might owe his whole career to Mr. Rogers.
You can hear Wesley in action and view upcoming events on Facebook or his website, wesleyskinnercellist.com
Wesley will be performing three of Bach's cello suites as part of the Tempe Festival for the Arts. Performance will be Saturday, December 3 at 4PM on Mill Ave.
Also on Dec 2, Wesley will be teaching all levels of young Arizona cello students at ASTA-AZ's Cellobration at Tempe High School. More details here
