Stella O’Malley, psychotherapist, bestselling author, and co-host of Gender: A Wider Lens Podcast, speaks with Julian Vigo about her personal and professional experiences in the “gender identity” debate and the way the “born this way” ideology within the gay community was quickly adopted within the “gender identity” camp. Focussing upon the problems of medicalising gender, O’Malley discusses her work on the Channel 4 documentary “Trans-Kids: It’s Time To Talk” and the fallout from this programme which includes a widening of the lens upon childhood gender transition to include the medicalisation of children, the entrenchment of gender stereotypes and the reluctance to move treatments for gender dysphoria towards a therapeutic or analytic model.
