  • 14. The Black Man in America

Welcome to today's episode of Stop Signs are Optional where BLACK LIVES MATTER. We are taking a pause from our normal subject matter and providing space to discuss the Black Lives Matter Movement, to honor George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tamir Rice, and countless unnamed Black innocent victims.

To the Black Community: We see you; We hear you, We feel your frustrations, yet We have no idea what it’s like to LIVE your fears, frustrations, pain, and we are not trying to pretend like We do. As white women, we never have and never will experience racism in our country. That means we are not and could not be experts on this matter however we can act as facilitators.

Lindsey and Allie welcome Micah Anderson: A Black Man in America to the show. Micah shares part of his life and experiences as a black man and how vastly different they are from a white life through code switching, softening his personality, and changing his demeanor to make others more comfortable. This episode was recorded exactly two weeks after the death of George Floyd.

    Key Moments:

[4:35] Annoyed with 'white saviors' at protests and marches.[5:50] Lindsey and Allie are ready to get uncomfortable.

[17:56] Micah Anderson joins the show! He needs no other credential other than 'A Black Man in America.'
[23:00] Recent experiences at Black Lives Matter marches and protests.
[23:50] The new White or non-Black guilt and weight is something that Black people have been carrying their entire lives and can never put it down.
[29:00] Why is it so important to ask the Black community how they should be supported?
[33:15] How to be impactful without harm.
[43:15] Why does Micah (and others) refer to himself as a 'palatable Black man' and how does code switching apply to race?
    [46:40] "I have a Black friend/girlfriend/boyfriend."
[57:36] Why are White people inherently scared of Black people?
[59:50] Lindsey shares a story of learned racism from her childhood.
[1:03:50] Diversity and inclusion versus marginalization of Black people.
[1:05:20] The 13th Amendment, the documentary on Netflix, and that of the actual Constitution.
[1:10:20] White guilt. How period pieces - movies - always paint Black people in a negative light.
[1:13:08] Equality versus Equity: What's the difference?
[1:20:40] It is not the job of a Black person to educate a White person. However, Micah believes it is necessary to be palatable to White people, initially, in order for the work to be shared.

    Worst Friend Ever Bylaws:

-Membership into the WFE is very organized and exclusive.  Needy friendships are not what we do.  We are not for everyone and that’s OK.

-Friendships have to be easy, authentic, simple, and with absolutely NO pressure.
-The members agree that we will not always call each other back.
-If we are working, we will not answer the phone.
-We will lose track of time and be late.  We expect it.
-Members know Time is an ‘ish’ :  eight-ish-seven-ish... we’ll get there.
-Three phone calls in a row means it is an emergency and we will answer the phone.
-If you are stranded on the side of the road at 2 AM we are the ones to call. We will come get you and bring coffee, and once we know you’re fine, we will probably make gentle fun of you.
-Your success is our success and we will celebrate your wins as though they were our own.
-If your partner is dumb enough to break your heart text the word pineapple and we’ll help you hide the body.
-But don’t expect us to respond to every text message or phone call. That’s not who we are and definitely not what we do.

About Stop Signs Are Optional

From the publisher's feed

Hi, I'm Lindsey, and this show is all about how I live life at full throttle. Making a complete stop is never an option for me. Things tend to get a little weird along the way and I’m here to share every scandalous, funny, and cringe-worthy detail. My hope is to allow others to embrace their weirdness too. I frequently team up with my best friend Allie as we dig out stories from our 16 year friendship and discuss how completely opposite we are.
