Straight Bible

What does "Give us this day our daily bread" mean? Matthew 6:11 (KJV): Jesus teaches us to ask for today, and "man shall not live by bread alone" (Matthew 4:4).

"Give us this day our daily bread" (Matthew 6:11). Matt reads the Lord's Prayer in Matthew 6:7-15 and starts with "godliness with contentment is great gain" (1 Timothy 6:6-10) and "take no thought for the morrow." Then the bread itself: "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4; Deuteronomy 8:3), "I am the bread of life" (John 6:35), and Job, who "esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food" (Job 23:12).

Most of the episode is in the wilderness. God rains "bread from heaven" to prove them day by day (Exodus 16:4), "man did eat angels' food" (Psalm 78:25), and the manna does not fall on the sabbath. In Numbers 11 the mixed multitude lusts for flesh, Eldad and Medad prophesy in the camp, and the quail end at Kibroth-hattaavah, "because there they buried the people that lusted." Deuteronomy 8 warns not to say "My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth."

The last stretch moves into verse 12: the unforgiving servant (Matthew 18:23-35), the woman who "loved much" (Luke 7:36-50), "faith without works is dead" (James 2:14-26), and Peter walking on the water.

Why didn't God punish Aaron for the golden calf? Exodus 32 (KJV), plus the two witnesses (Revelation 11) and more from the July 6, 2026 live Q&A.

Beach Boy asks why God did not punish Aaron right away after he made the golden calf. Matt and Top read Exodus 32. "When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount," they asked Aaron to make gods, and Aaron called a feast to the LORD in front of the calf: delay led to mixed worship. "The LORD repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people" (verse 14), the sons of Levi answered "Who is on the LORD's side?" (verse 26), and Moses prayed, "if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written" (verse 32). Their answer: the responsibility falls on both Aaron and the people, and God still had a role for Aaron in the story.

Other questions: the season of Christ's return, being born into sin (John 1:9), the Amalekites, how Jesus was born without sin, Ecclesiastes 1, fire or lightning from heaven (Leviticus 9:22-24), NASB95 or NLT, the Recovery Version, extra-biblical books, a Wednesday crucifixion, Esau's birthright, purgatory, "flesh and bones" (Luke 24:39), and "greater works than these" (John 14:12).

Does God know the future? Ed Mabrie argues God knows our tendencies but not choices we have not made, and the hosts answer with Genesis 18:17-19.

Ed Mabrie joins Matt Hepner and TopLobsta and shares his new book on the letters to the seven churches (Revelation 1-4) and his spiritual warfare course. The first hour covers being born again ("Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God," John 3:3), familiar spirits, the four voices, God's "still small voice" (1 Kings 19:12), the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17), and why the church is not a building.

Then the big debate. Ed says God does not know how faithful you are going to be, because you are an entity of free choice: "The choice I'm going to make tomorrow doesn't exist yet." He walks through the satan in Job 1, Abraham and Isaac (Hebrews 11:17-19), prophecy, and Calvinism and irresistible grace. The hosts push back with "Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do... For I know him" (Genesis 18:17-19). These are Ed's views; the hosts don't all agree.

It ends with hell as separation from the Father ("My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"), whether eternal punishment is just, the man who never heard ("Jungle Joe"), Cornelius and "in every nation he that feareth him... is accepted with him" (Acts 10:35), a calling into ministry, and David's lion and bear (1 Samuel 17).

What does it mean to be born again? John 3:3-7 (KJV): "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." Born into the kingdom of Matthew 6:10.
Sermon on the Mount Pt 16, hosted by Matt Hepner and TopLobsta.

Pt 16 recaps "Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done" (Matthew 6:10) and asks how you get into that kingdom. There are two kingdoms: "every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation" (Matthew 12:25), the sheep and the goats (Matthew 25:31-46), and "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord" (Matthew 7:21). Nobody casually ends up in heaven. We are "without strength" until "while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:6-8), because the natural man is "alienated from the life of God" (Ephesians 4:17-18) and "the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not" (2 Corinthians 4:3-4).

Then John 3: Nicodemus comes by night, and Jesus says "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God... Ye must be born again" (John 3:3-7). Along the way: baptism as burial with Him (Romans 6:1-7), "He must increase, but I must decrease" (John 3:30), and "as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness" (John 3:14; Numbers 21:8-9).

It closes back in Matthew 6: "Thy will be done," "Bless the LORD, O my soul" (Psalm 103), "Give us this day our daily bread" (Matthew 6:11), life as "a vapour" (James 4:13-15), "he hath set the world in their heart" (Ecclesiastes 3:11), and "godliness with contentment is great gain" (1 Timothy 6:6-10).

Why is Jesus better than the angels? Hebrews 1:5-14: God never said to an angel "Thou art my Son," and to the Son He says "Thy throne, O God, is for ever."

"For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee?" (Hebrews 1:5). After a recap of Hebrews 1:1-4, Otis reads Hebrews 1:4-14. The Son took the form of a servant (Philippians 2:7), "Thou art my Son" comes from Psalm 2:7, and He was foreordained before the foundation of the world (1 Peter 1:20). The only begotten Son is set against the sons of God in Job 1:6.

Worshipping angels is a warning sign (Colossians 2:18; Galatians 1:8). They cover the spirit of antichrist, "forbidding to marry" (1 Timothy 4:1-5), and "Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light" (2 Corinthians 11:14). Angels are "ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation" (Hebrews 1:14), and Gabriel stands "in the presence of God" (Luke 1:19).

Who was Melchizedek? Hebrews 7 and Psalm 110:4: "king of Salem, priest of the most high God," without father or mother, and Jesus a priest "after the order of Melchizedek."

How has God spoken to us by His Son? Hebrews 1:1-4: God spoke by the prophets, but in these last days by His Son, the express image of His person.

"God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds" (Hebrews 1:1-2). Otis explains why he reads the NASB 1995, then reads Hebrews 1:1-4.

Hebrews was written to believers under persecution, and the book sets the old covenant beside the new: grace and truth came by Jesus Christ (John 1:17), and God cut a covenant with Abram (Genesis 15). "The express image of his person" (Hebrews 1:3) is like a stamp on wax, not the moon reflecting the sun. Jesus says "Before Abraham was, I am" (John 8:58), "I and my Father are one" (John 10:30) and "he that hath seen me hath seen the Father" (John 14:9).

Also covered: the first and the last (Isaiah 44; Revelation 1), heaven meted out with the span (Isaiah 40:12), "the brightness of his glory," the only begotten Son, modalism and the Trinity, "upholding all things by the word of his power," "the image of the invisible God" (Colossians 1:15-20), one sacrifice for sins (Hebrews 10:11-12), and an outline of the whole book.

How did a Jewish atheist hooked on opiates come to Jesus? Ben's testimony, and Matthew 12:43-45: the unclean spirit that returns with seven more.
Guest episode with Ben from End of the World News, hosted by Matt Hepner and TopLobsta.

Ben from End of the World News joins Matt and TopLobsta. He grew up with a Jewish identity, was a rebellious atheist, lived in Hollywood, and spent years on opiates. In 12-step meetings he heard addiction called a disease, then read the passage where the unclean spirit "taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself" (Matthew 12:43-45) and saw it as a spiritual problem.

A friend told him, "Try praying to God." After a detour through new age ideas, he heard that "the most Jewish thing you could do is follow the Jewish Messiah." Around 2021 the unseen realm started to make sense to him through Romans 8, Deuteronomy 32:8-9 and "we wrestle not against flesh and blood" (Ephesians 6:12). Now he preaches the gospel to his Uber riders and points to the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20).

The second half is Ben's view of world events, prophecy and Israel, which he says are being manufactured, with the hosts pushing back that God still has a destiny for that nation (Romans 11). They also cover Yom Kippur, Jesus as the Passover lamb, "Render therefore unto Caesar" (Matthew 22:21), the sinner's prayer, and Jacob wrestling with God (Genesis 32:28). These are Ben's views, discussed openly.

What does "Hallowed be thy name" mean? Matthew 6:9-10 (KJV): hallowed is hagiazo, holy and set apart, and "Thy kingdom come" is a kingdom that is not of this world.

"After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven" (Matthew 6:9-10). Matt reads the whole prayer (6:9-13), then starts with how God invites us into His work: "the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us" (Romans 8:26), "Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do" (Genesis 18), "called us with an holy calling" (2 Timothy 1:9), Daniel reading Jeremiah (Daniel 9), and "we are labourers together with God" (1 Corinthians 3:9).

"Our Father" leads into Jesus' prayer in John 17: "Sanctify them through thy truth." Sanctify and hallowed share the Greek word hagiazo: holy, separated from the profane, consecrated. Matt's picture: his wife can walk into a bank with his name, and it means something. Let His name mean something in you. Mary says "holy is his name" (Luke 1:49), God says "I will be hallowed among the children of Israel" (Leviticus 22:32), and "Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain" (Exodus 20:7).

"Thy kingdom come" is a kingdom that is "not of this world" (John 18:36). Listener questions from the Nephilim Death Squad Patreon and live chat. On people who never heard of Christ, Matt goes to Peter: "God is no respecter of persons: But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him" (Acts 10:34-35), and to Paul: the invisible things of God "are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made... so that they are without excuse" (Romans 1:20). As one of the co-hosts put it: "God's issue is not how do I put good people in hell. God's issue is how do I get bad people into heaven. That's why Jesus came."

Also covered: whether the earth cries out to God (Genesis 4:10; Luke 19:40), the Trinity, hearing God without an audible voice, what worship is (Isaiah 26:3), and whether the dead can see us or be prayed for ("it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment," Hebrews 9:27; the cloud of witnesses, Hebrews 12:1).

The last question asks what "the temple of God" is in 2 Thessalonians 2:4, set against "your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost" (1 Corinthians 6:19). Matt asks whether a system could set itself up in that temple, and the crew talks about living in the world but not of it (1 Peter 4:8; Daniel 1:8).
