What does the Bible say about hypocrites? In Luke 12:1 (KJV) Jesus warns, "Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy."
Sermon on the Mount Part 11 with Matt Hepner and TopLobsta: giving in secret (Matthew 6:1-4), what hypocrite means in Greek, and Jesus' woes to the Pharisees.

Hypocrisy stands in exact opposition to the culture of the kingdom. Matt reads Matthew 6:1-4 (do not sound a trumpet before thee) and balances it with being salt and light: the issue is your motive, not whether you are seen. The Greek hypokrites means an actor, a stage player, a pretender. Hypocrisy is the disease; doing things to be seen of men is the symptom. Then Jesus' woes at a Pharisee's table (Luke 11:37-52), and in Luke 12 the leaven of the Pharisees, be not afraid of them that kill the body, confessing Christ before men, the rich fool, take no thought, and where your treasure is. It ends with the cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7), beware of the scribes, and the widow's two mites (Luke 21:1-4).

What does it mean to love your enemies? Matthew 5:43-48 (KJV): "Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you."
Sermon on the Mount Part 10 with Matt Hepner and TopLobsta: insults and the other cheek, the two swords of Luke 22, the extra mile, and love as a life force.

Picking up Matthew 5:38-42 from Part 9, Matt says the other cheek is about insults, not danger: don't meet force with force, and ask what the other person is going through. He reads Luke 22:35-38 (the two swords), points to Romans 13 on why order beats anarchy, and reads Acts 13:6-12, where Paul strikes Elymas blind for perverting the ways of the Lord, not for an insult. Going the extra mile leads to Rebekah at the well (Genesis 24). Then Matthew 5:43-48: love your enemies and be perfect (complete), with Acts 14, Romans 12:9-21 (heap coals of fire on his head), John 13:34-35 and 1 Corinthians 13, love as a life force. It ends with Elisha feeding the Syrian army (2 Kings 6:8-23, "Fear not") and G. Campbell Morgan on Matthew 5.

Is it a sin to swear on the Bible? In Matthew 5:33-37 (KJV) Jesus says, "Swear not at all," but "let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay."
Sermon on the Mount Part 9 with Matt Hepner and TopLobsta: swearing vs. cursing, the Lord's name in vain, and why more than yes or no cometh of evil.

Taking the Lord's name in vain is less about hitting your thumb with a hammer and more like a bride taking her husband's name and dishonoring it (Exodus 20:7; Proverbs 30:8-9). John Bunyan defines vain swearing as a frivolous and wicked calling upon God to witness, so an oath on the Bible, or on anything else, is still more than yes or no. Lying shows you fear man more than God. Then heaven as God's throne (Revelation 21, Genesis 28, John 1), contentment and the love of money (1 Timothy 6), and resist not evil (Matthew 5:38-42): dead to sin, alive unto God (Romans 6).

Are Christians still under the law? In Galatians 5:16-18 (KJV) Paul says, "Walk in the Spirit," and "if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law."
Sermon on the Mount Part 8 with Matt Hepner and TopLobsta: Jesus came not to destroy the law but to fulfil it, from the torn veil to Hebrews and Acts.

After a Matthew 5:17-32 recap: the tabernacle pattern (Exodus 26), the veil rent in twain (Mark 15), and Christ entering heaven by His own blood (Hebrews 9-10). In Acts 13 the rulers "fulfilled them in condemning him." In Acts 15 the apostles refuse to lay the yoke of the law on the Gentiles, in Acts 10 God sends Peter to Cornelius, and in Galatians 2 Paul withstands Peter to the face. The answer to the lust of the flesh is not a checklist: walk in the Spirit.

How can your righteousness exceed the Pharisees'? In Matthew 5:19-32 (KJV) Jesus says, "But I say unto you": anger is murder and a look is adultery in the heart.
Sermon on the Mount Part 7 with Matt Hepner and TopLobsta: an external law you can keep in your own strength leads to pride. God wants it written on the heart.

How did Jesus fulfill the law? In Matthew 5:17-18 (KJV) He says, "I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil," and not one jot or tittle shall pass.
Sermon on the Mount Part 6 with Matt Hepner and TopLobsta: the law is perfect like an acorn, and Christ is the body that casts the shadow (Colossians 2:17).

Matt unpacks what "the law" (nomos) means, why the Old Testament was written for our admonition (1 Corinthians 10), and how Gentiles are grafted into Israel's olive tree (Romans 11). Then he traces how Jesus fulfilled it: the prophecies of Matthew 1-2, the promise to Abraham 430 years before the law, the law as our schoolmaster (Galatians 3), the middle wall of partition broken down (Ephesians 2), the Passover lamb and communion (Exodus 12, Luke 22, 1 Corinthians 11), the new covenant written on the heart (Jeremiah 31, Hebrews 10), and the two commandments on which hang all the law and the prophets (Matthew 22:34-40).

What does "salt of the earth" mean in Matthew 5:13-16 (KJV)? Jesus tells His disciples, "Ye are the salt of the earth" and "the light of the world," and it was never just for them.

Jesus saw the multitudes but taught His disciples, and verses 13-16 show why: the small group is God's delivery system to everyone else. Israel was separated from the nations to be "a wise and understanding people" in their sight (Deuteronomy 4:5-9; Leviticus 20:22-26; Deuteronomy 7 and 12), and today that war is spiritual: "the weapons of our warfare are not carnal" (2 Corinthians 10:3-5; Ephesians 6:10-17). When God's people act like the nations, His name is "blasphemed among the Gentiles" (Romans 2:24; Ezekiel 36:16-27).

So Jesus says "Ye are the salt," not "ye have salt." Salt stops the spread of corruption, supplies what people lack and makes life taste better. Light runs from "I am the light of the world" (John 8:12) to John 1, John 3 and "a chosen generation" (1 Peter 2:9). Jesus gives the salt only a warning, so Matt closes on one way it loses its savour: division, as at Corinth (1 Corinthians 1:10; 3:1-9). A city on a hill is made of lights in their own houses.

Why will Christians be persecuted? Matthew 5:10-12 (KJV): "Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

The last Beatitude is day-one stuff. Matt reads Matthew 5:10-12, where Jesus moves from "blessed are they" to "blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you... for great is your reward in heaven." Jesus told people the cost up front: "which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost" (Luke 14:28).

The early church lived it. The apostles were beaten and departed "rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name" (Acts 5:41). James was killed with the sword and Peter slept between two soldiers (Acts 12). Paul and Silas were beaten, and at midnight they "prayed, and sang praises unto God" (Acts 16:25), and the Philippian jailer believed. Peter says "think it not strange concerning the fiery trial" (1 Peter 4:12), and Paul says "all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution" (2 Timothy 3:12).

What does "Blessed are the peacemakers" mean in Matthew 5:9 (KJV)? Making peace doesn't make you a child of God. It shows that you already are one, and nobody makes peace without having peace.
Sermon on the Mount Pt 3, hosted by Matt Hepner and TopLobsta.

One verse this week. Peace (eirene) is "the tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ," and "peacemaker" appears in the Bible only here. Then the passages: "go in peace" (Mark 5:34), your peace coming upon a worthy house (Matthew 10:5-14), "live peaceably with all men" (Romans 12:18), and "follow peace with all men, and holiness" (Hebrews 12:14).

It is always "grace and peace," in that order, because peace is the result of grace (2 Peter 1:2). David wrote "I will bless the LORD at all times" while running for his life before Achish (Psalm 34; 1 Samuel 21:10-15), and the same psalm says "seek peace, and pursue it." But Jesus also said, "I came not to send peace, but a sword" (Matthew 10:34). The children of God are made manifest by love (1 John 3:10-11; John 13:35) and by being led by the Spirit (Romans 8:14).
