How nice to revisit Kurt Wallander
Some of my favorite books ever were Kurt Wallander novels. It was sad to let him go in The Troubled Man.
I saw this novel realized with Kenneth Branagh on BBC Masterpiece Theatre I think it was, and remember thinking ' I don't remember reading this story'. I also remember looking it up and realizing it did not exist.
What a wonderful surprise when I saw it in Audible, I purchased immediately and listened right away. I am just sorry it was so short.
It was good to hear his grumpy retorts and his philosophy on life. To remember how he worked through the crime scenes.
I just regret that it made me sad again to know there were no more to be listened to.
Simon Vance was wonderful as always. I would listen to him read about garbage pick up.
After the book is over There is a wonderful afterword by Henning Mankell telling about the inception of Wallander and the writing through his life. Make sure you listen all way to the end.
    "Bye Kurt"
the last book of just Wallender
entertaining. only critisism is the English spoken dialogue. wallender is not a bloke. in the other books its spoken with more a Swede dialect.
Nice short story but I wanted more....
Good read by Simon Vance but for a full credit, I expected a lot more I think.

    Critic Reviews:
"Last year, I was not alone in hailing Pierre Lemaitres Alex as one of my top crime books of 2013 . . . Irène, now published in an excellent English translation, is just as gripping, frightening, intelligent and brilliant" (Marcel Berlins, The Times)
"Quirky, brutal and not for the faint-hearted, it is crime fiction of the highest class . . . Superbly constructed and executed, it puts Lemaitre very close to Ellroys class. If you pick it up, you wont be able to put it down" ( Geoffrey Wansell, Daily Mail)

And just when Jessie thinks things can't get any worse, a body lands on her car. Uber-hunky and altogether infuriating cop Wilson Rye suggests she concentrate on solving her other problems and leave the murder investigation to the experts. But does Jessie agree? Take a guess.

    Any additional comments?
I always need a good laugh and Cindy Blackburn coupled with Caroline Miller's reading do that in spades! I look forward to the next book in this lighthearted, giggling, silly mystery series.
    Another Cue Ball mystery ...
    Any additional comments?
Four Play is the 4th book in the Cue Ball Mystery series. Our leading lady Jessie is caught again in the middle of a murder mystery. Jessie lends her car to a young neighbor to take his date to the Junior Dance. Little does she know that hours later a dead body will be on top of the car. Homicide Captain Rye (who is Jessie's fiance) wants to keep her out of the investigation, but as usual she just can't do it. With the help of her neighbors Candy, Karen and Peter, Jessie sets out to solve the murder.
I enjoyed this book very much. This is a mystery that is well thought out by Ms. Blackburn. Ms. Miller's narration is spot on and seamless from the previous 2 books. Ms. Miller's attention to detail in creating each character's voice draws you into the story.
I would recommend this book to my friends who like a good solid mystery. This book is appropriate for listeners 15+ years and older.
    A Fun Mystery
I love this series and can't wait for more books! This is a fun cozy mystery with a little humor and romance mixed in. I feel like I live in the same building as these characters. The author does a wonderful job with all of these characters, they all have their own personality and quirkiness. I love the humor that is mixed in with all of these mysteries. I'm not a fan of romance novels, but the little bit of romance mixed in works perfect with the story!
Caroline brings the characters to life!! She did another awesome job with the narration!!
I'm looking forward to more books in this series and more books narrated by Caroline!
    Fun and humorous read

One of Matt Scudder better stories...
Ive read in real time all the Scudders books as they were published, but the pleasure to listen to listen to them few years later has not changed. In this story we find a Matt Scudder going trough a more settled period of his life (living with Elaine and working with TJ , almost like a normal detective). The plot is a more conventional of a mystery/thriller story and a bit reminiscent of Agatha Christie. A group of young 31 "honorable" men engage themselves to meet every year bound in a sort of life-long fraternity- until the last remaining member alone will be alive. After a few years one member suspects that too many of them are dying too young and in too large numbers. Scudder is hired to investigate and..
This mystery has a pleasant pace with an intriguing scenario supported by great dialogue and interesting NY characters. A must read !
    Couldn't listen............
What would have made A Long Line of Dead Men better?
I own this book and was looking forward hearing it - but the Mr. Barrett's voice was so annoying (no matter the speed or volume) that I'm deleting it. Love Lawrence Block, Love Scudder - won't be buying any more that are read by Joe Barrett, however.
Would you be willing to try another one of Joe Barretts performances?
    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
My favorite Scudder to date (probably)
I have listened to the entire Scudder set to this point (plus a few others out of sequence) , and this is my favorite to this point in the series. Unlike the previous entry (The Devil Knows You're Dead), this one has a great plot and a compelling, almost eerie mystery that grabs the reader. I would compare it to other detective novels but that would comprise a spoiler.
Joe Barrett has really grown on me as a narrator, too.
My only complaint is that I didn't want it to end. Block wraps things up pretty quickly, when he could have prolonged the story for quite a while had he wanted to. But that "complaint" just indicates that I was having a good time with the book. Highly recommended.
Fantastic! First time to read a Block book
What made the experience of listening to A Long Line of Dead Men the most enjoyable?
Fascinating believable story! Narration superb. Joe Barrett's voice is welcoming and his accents subtle & spot on. One of those you didn't want to end.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Matt Scudder of course!
Not often that I read a book that references other books /ideas and I take the time to look them up.

    FUNNY, COMPLETELY ENJOYABLE, OFTEN ACCURATE
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This is a wonderful book written by the late ELLIOT ROOSEVELT. I started reading the hardback books just a few years before ELLIOT died and have loved everyone and wished there could have been many more. Once you fall in love with Eleanor, you want more and more about her interesting life.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
ELEANOR ROOSEVELT becomes a very smart lady that could very easily be your friend. Even though these books are fiction, you will be surprised to discover just how many plots contain true facts, such as the MOB'S help during WWII on the shipping docks and during the invasion of Sicily and of course the WINSTON HOURS.
What does Nelson Runger bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Another point of view and interpretation of the story.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    I love the whole book.

If you could sum up The White House Pantry Murder in three words, what would they be?
    Eleanor Has Insight!!!
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Roosevelt always has twists and turns in his stories. Never what you expect.
Which character as performed by Nelson Runger was your favorite?
Of course its Eleanor and how she comes to a conclusion.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    Publisher's Summary:
There was a certain heavy air of intrigue and mystery emanating from the old inn high on the cliff top. The Catherine-Wheel had once been a home for pirates and smugglers, but now it looked like it was harbouring a murderer. It had begun with an advertisement in the paper requesting descendants of the late innkeeper, Jeremiah Taverner, to stay for a weekend at the inn. They had arrived, a mixed assortment, to the family reunion eager to discover the secrets of their ancestry. But one of them had been hideously murdered, bringing the inn's stormy past into frightening focus. Scotland Yard, already suspicious of dope smuggling in the area, sends Maud Silver to investigate before the fireworks start to fly.
    Members Reviews:
Unlistenable Dud from Usually Wonderful Writer
What disappointed you about The Catherine Wheel?
I usually love Patricia Wentworth and I usually rate her books 5 stars. I consider her as good as Agatha Christie--an intelligent, interesting writer of Golden Age mysteries. Unfortunately, this story opens with long, agonizing lists and descriptions of complicated family relationships. A central character is tracing his many relatives and choosing some of them to come spend the weekend. The relationships are quite labored and unless you are insanely into genaology (not your own) you may find this deadly dull. I tried and tried but could not get past this indigestible clump of relationships. ANY of her other books are vastly better than this one. Latter End is a particular favorite of mine...The Fingerprint, Lonesome Road, Through the Wall---you can't go wrong with these wonderful titles if you like an old fashioned classic British mystery, but I cannot possibly recommend The Catherine Wheel. The usual reader reads this one and she is great. But not enough to save this dud of a tale. So sorry!
A bit tedious but good mystery
Patricia Wentworth's series (written around the same time as Agatha Christie and other classic crime-writers) stars the quiet, self-effacing Miss Maud Silver. Miss Silver has been a governess in her earlier years, and now in her retirement, she knits and solves mysteries (has her own modest little detective service). She often takes a place in the background of wherever she is--almost so people will scarcely notice her, but one always knows she is about to issue a profound thought by her prefacing polite little cough. I suppose it is easy to compare her to Christie's Miss Marple, and they do have some things in common, but they remain very separate individuals. Miss Marple is sent for because people just know she has an instinct for solving crimes, whereas Miss Silver is deliberately hired as the detective.
In this book, Jacob Taverner, is sole inheritor of an estate that might have been divided among many siblings (Jeremiah, jr, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts and Mary and Joanna)--but wasn't. Subsequently the family has scattered, new generation born, and Jacob sends out an ad in the paper stating he is looking for long lost relatives. In reality, he is looking for specific ones, whom he asks to join him at Catherine's Wheel, a lodge long known for it's early (and perhaps current) smuggling connections with his own secret intentions. Jane Heron and Jeremy Taverner (two of the cousins) travel there together.

    Publisher: Audible Studios

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
The final novel in one of the most critically acclaimed PI series in the annals of crime fiction!
"Few writers working in any genre offer tales with such moral complexity, dark humor, and, most of all, heart." (Megan Abbott, author of Dare Me)
Drunk, alone, and racked with guilt over the tragic death of his girlfriend Pam, Moe Prager is destined for oblivion. But destiny takes a detour when a shadowy figure from Moe's past reappears to beg for Moe's help in locating her missing daughter. As a reluctant, distracted Moe delves into the case, he discovers that nothing is as it seems and no one involved is quite who or what they appear to be. This is especially true of the missing daughter, an early internet sensation known ironically as the Lost Girl or the Hollow Girl. The case itself is hollow, as Moe finds little proof that anyone is actually missing.
Things take a bizarre twist as Moe stumbles across a body in a trendy Manhattan apartment and the Hollow Girl suddenly re-emerges on video screens everywhere. It's a wild ride through the funhouse as Moe tries to piece together a case from the half-truths and lies told to him by a fool's parade of family members, washed-up showbiz types, uncaring cops, a doorman, and a lovesick PI. Even as the ticking clock gets louder, Moe is unsure if it's all a big hoax or if someone's life is really at stake. The question isn't whether or not Moe can find the Hollow Girl, but whether the Hollow Girl was ever there at all.
    Editorial Reviews:
"The novel is a fitting conclusion to this intelligent, literary series by a fine writer who has made his reputation both as a mystery writer and a poet." (The Associated Press)
    Members Reviews:
Not Coleman's best work, but I enjoyed it anyway.
It was a fitting end to what has been an excellent series. It was not really a mystery in the true sense of the word, but I can't say more without introducing spoilers. The storyline dragged at times; I had the feeling that Coleman didn't know where he was going with this. Still, I liked Moe Prager as a protagonist and look forward to future writings by this author.

    Legal Series Worthy of Following
Would you consider the audio edition of The Advocate's Conviction to be better than the print version?
The mediums are completely different. For me, I love to experience the print version, but as with most audiobooks the visuals come alive when presented in the spoken word.
What other book might you compare The Advocate's Conviction to and why?
John Grisham comes to mind, but the fascinating children's advocate element adds a level of interest sometimes lacking in many legal thrillers.
What does Laurel Schroeder bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
The narrator was a bit lacking regarding the presentation of differing characters. However because the writing is seamless, the listen was smooth and pleasing to follow.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Ms. Burrells experience as a childrens legal advocate shines in this heart-wrenching and at times terrifying journey of compelling attorney seeking answers about missing kids assigned to her care.
    Any additional comments?
Exceptional writing is at the core of this legal thriller. I knew very little about the court system relating to child advocacy. The legal elements and dialogue between the characters was quite fascinating. Ive read several of this authors books and as always, she provided incomparable information in an entertaining manner. If you love an intriguing, ongoing legal read the Advocate Series by Teresa Burrell is one I highly recommend.
Wonderful legal thriller deserves better narration
This is not a typical legal thriller novel or series. This book takes on real world issues in a serious way. Narration is just average, and this serious novel deserves better. The protagonist is a lawyer and a child advocate.
    I recommend this series.
    Advocates Conviction
Would you consider the audio edition of The Advocate's Conviction to be better than the print version?
I still prefer to read the book but the audio version is good if you are traveling by car or want to listen to something different from music.
What other book might you compare The Advocate's Conviction to and why?
I haven't read any other books like the Advocates Conviction to compare it to. W
    Which scene was your favorite?
My favorite part was when they finally caught the judge and social worker.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Who knows what goes on behind court room doors??
    Any additional comments?
I've read Ms. Burrell first two books. Now I have listened to the 3rd book and look forward to the others that follow. I met Ms. Burrell at the Victorville CA Barnes and Noble when she was promoting her first book The Advocate she signed my book and was very pleasant.

But when a body lands on her couch, and the cute cop in her kitchen accuses her of murder, even Jessie isn't sure what will happen next. She also isnt sure how to catch a killer, but she's about to learn.
Her skill set doesn't exactly fit the task, however. Jessie put herself through college hustling at a pool table, and nowadays makes her living writing racy novels. This middle-aged romance author has excellent people-watching skills, a keen imagination, and street smarts going way back. Come to think of it, Jessie is the perfect sleuth.
Playing With Poison is a cozy mystery with a lot of humor, a little romance, and far too much champagne.
    Members Reviews:
    Engaging and amusing
Would you consider the audio edition of Playing With Poison to be better than the print version?
No, but its a very good edition nonetheless. I like that when you're listening, things you might have skimmed come to your attention and you go "I don't remember reading that!"
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes it did, because we all wanted to know who killed the money guy. I was suspicious of the actual killer from very early on. But then, I've snorted a hell of a lot of detective novels in my time.
Which character as performed by Caroline Miller was your favorite?
Well now ... in the book, my favourite character was the detective. But I have to admit, in the audio version, I got quite fond of "Karen", the redhead.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I swooned. In all the right places, and in a manner entirely appropriate to some of the novelist's characters :)
    Any additional comments?
Listening to the story is great, I picked up so many bits I must have inadvertently "skimmed" , and Caroline Miller gives each character just enough definition to make them recognisable, but not in an over-the-top way. I liked Caroline's "Candy" better than I did the original :)
Great Story for Mystery lovers of a Certain Age!
Thoroughly enjoyed this mystery, enough suspects to keep everyone interested and the twist end is classic. Especially enjoyed the comedic moments, the situations are so real life, you just have to laugh out load. One can almost picture the our heroine, great real life feel and responses from the characters! I think listening to this mystery is better than reading, one get the full atmosphere, which is real, one feel as if you could actually find the Stone Fountain!
Full of laughter and a touch of mystery
    Any additional comments?
What a fun book, add a little mystery, a little romance, some quirky neighbors and I am hooked, listed to the whole book in a day! The voice actor Caroline Miller does a nice job keeping the main character Jessie lite and fun, slightly sarcastic and funny, I like how she differentiates different voices so I can tell who each person is easily. All together a fun read and I look forward to reading the series

    Publisher's Summary:
When Dr. John Taylor is found dead in a hotel room in his hometown, the local police find enough incriminating evidence to suspect foul play. Detective Samantha Adams, whose Palo Alto beat usually covers small-town crimes, is innocently thrown into a high-profile murder case that is more intricately intertwined than she could ever imagine. A renowned plastic surgeon, a respected family man, and an active community spokesman, Dr. Taylor was loved and admired. But, hidden from the public eye, he led a secret life - in fact, multiple lives. A closeted polygamist, Dr. Taylor was married to three very different women in three separate cities. And when these three unsuspecting women show up at his funeral, suspicions run high. Adams soon finds herself tracking down a murderer through a web of lies and marital discord.
With a rare combination of gripping storytelling, vivid prose, and remarkable insight into character, Alice LaPlante brings to life a story of passion and obsession that will haunt listeners long after they turn the final page. A charged and provocative psychological thriller, A Circle of Wives dissects the dynamics of love and marriage, trust and jealousy, posing the terrifying question: How well do you really know your spouse?
    Critic Reviews:
"Kyla Garcia manages the perfect balance between uncertainty and determination as she voices new detective Sam Adams's battle to differentiate truth from lies on her first murder case. Plastic surgeon John Taylor is found dead in a hotel room. As the story unfolds through first-person accounts - delivered by the other female narrators - and newspaper reports - read by George Newbern - the listener is invited into the complicated life of Taylor, who had three wives. Only the first wife, Deborah, coolly characterized by Nan MacNamara, knows of the existence of the others. At times, the listening is disorienting as each of these very different women voices her grief and analyses the lie of her marriage. It can be painful but ultimately fascinating. Who killed the likable and idealistic Doctor Taylor and why?" (AudioFile)

    Enjoyable until the end
I selected this book because of its setting (I'm a long time resident of the area) and the concept of the story being told by individual characters. The read was pleasant enough--performances by the narrators quite good--but parts of the plot became a bit predictable. What was the most disappointing was the very end. I felt lured to the conclusion only to be left hanging mid-air. I even listened a second time..still can't figure out what the last chapter was intended to communicate.
    Not my cup of tea
To be fair, I usually listen to fast-paced murder mysteries. This book was not that at all. For me the story line was too slow and too much story telling about the wives and their lives. I kept waiting for some investigating to occur. I tried to keep listening, but about half way through, I gave up. Maybe the book gets better at the end. Also, I just couldn't find it plausible that the wives had no idea that their husband was already married, particularly in this age of technology.
