I've read all the Midnight Louie mysteries now,except there's now one more to read. Carole Nelson Douglas is a great,versatile author. The series I just read has cats,mayhem,mystery,a love triangle,humor,humans and even dogs.The cats are the most intelligent.There's even a touch of the paranormal.What's not to like? I've read her Irene Adler books too.

Getting there....

Midnight Louis is always entertaining. Characters are growing. Like Midnight Louise, I favor Max so the Endgame will be interesting to say the least and the finale of quite a journey. Looking forward to more Midnight Louis but will miss the others like Ma if he moves north.

Excellence!

Three policing plots and two relationship plots make this a truly complicated tale. A rather suspicious theft/assault, an interesting woman art dealer with strange connections, and an evident munitions storage in a remote field make for some interesting policing and interdepartmental shenanigans. The interesting woman triggers some inner conflicts for Montalbano while Livia is experiencing an unexplained bout of depression. And, as always, there is Catarella!

More excellent writing from the master with impressive translation by Stephen Sartarelli and narrative interpretation by Grover Gardner.

Loved it.

Very enjoyable series and extremely well read. I would highly recommend this audible book without qualication.

WELL WRITTEN AND NARRATED

Still going strong. I enjoyed the performance of Bronson Pinchot so much. He brings the characters to life. Justis Fearsson is awesome. He is brave, determined to safe guard his loved ones, friends. The two important women in his life - his girlfriend and ex-cop partner were marvellous. I also like his teacher, the rune master who bend a lot of rules for him. All in all an exciting adventure. I hope book three will be published soon.

David B. Coe has delivered a deeply emotional story that is expertly woven into wonderfully crafted action sequences, suspense, and surprises for the readers and fans of Justis Fearsson. It's difficult to detail what I liked most, there's so much, without giving away elements of the story. Being primarily an audiobook person who listens during my commute to and from work, and in my travels, I found myself leaving a little earlier in the morning, taking the long way to work and home, for extra listening time. That's not just a testament to the writing, but the performance as well.Bronson Pinchot's voicing of the characters enhances how well the relationships between the them have been penned by the author. A wonderful novel. I look forward to the next installment.

Enjoyed this 2nd book of the series.

Great story, good character development and a new and interesting take on the Urban Fantasy genre. Really like the main character, something that is so important! I am interested in where this series is going, so I will be checking out the next book in the series.

The narrator Bronson Pinchot is awesome. I started to write that this series was the first time I listened to him, then checked out the other books he has done, and WOW he is a very accomplished narrator and has narrated some of my favorite books. Guess he so good at portraying his characters that I did not recognize him from one series to the next.

Into the Vortex

To classify this book a noir detective story is doing a great disservice to Maurizio de Giovanni. It is much more than that. Yes, it is a story about a killing of a fortune teller, the hatred of a manipulative actor, a savage disfigurement of "the most beautiful woman in Naples," the jealousies and obsessions that are an undergrowth of the city, the loves and fascinations of Commissario Ricciardi and Brigadier Maione, and assorted other characters.

A synopsis of this book would not only be pointless but self-defeating. This is a superb detective mystery story but also a deep and incisive discussion about fate and blood ties. Quintessentially Neopolitian in its outlook, and conceits, it is also a stylistic tour de force. Few books of this genre have the intensity, which grows from the first to last page. The vortex is the book, its characters, its story. The reader is swept into the vortex from the first page and the deeper he goes into the book, the tighter his attention is held and the faster his imagination is stimulated. It is hypnotic to the end and after.

The two undercurrent leitmotifs of this book are fate or destiny and the haunting speculation about blood ties, read family, job, marriage, love. There are no cliches here the author has thought out his questions and answers, if there are any answers. "Fate doesn't preordain: it has no will of its own. There is no such thing as fate." so thinks Ricciardi. Yet his blood ties and Maione's blood ties are powerful influences.

So, if you enjoy, the supernatural, political commentary, "who dun its", sociological, cultural and philosophical musings, this is definitely for you.

The only complaint that I have, and its is a small one, is that in some sections of this e-book, there is no break within the chapters at some point, so that the reader may go to the next paragraph and not realize that there is a separate section starting within the chapter.

I've read this novel before, and rank it among the very best crime I've read. The author wields language and perspective to heighten the fear and urgency of a time-sensitive investigation.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely! But it wasn't harmed by breaking it up.

The narrator was exceptional. By altering the tone and cadence of her voice, she was able to differentiate between characters and states of mind, without ever becoming cheesy or overacting. I'll be looking into her other books for sure.

Favorite Dark Fiction

If you could sum up The Devil's Detective in three words, what would they be?

My best friend called me and suggested this book to me - "it's dark and deep," she said, "you'll love it." And that it is. It's poetic and riveting. I could not stop reading this book. I actually bought it in person. Definitely not a book to recommend to say -- er--- your mother-in-law. But a book that makes you question what hell and heaven really is... one of the most striking comments in the book was (and I'm paraphrasing) -- that in hell, you live in a world of constant torture, rape, murder, and destruction but the worst part of it isn't all that, the worst part of hell is not knowing why you're there. You know you deserve this - but what did you do that made this so? (The characters in hell have no memories of their lives in Earth and that's what makes hell truly hell).

The character development and the ending are absolutely phenomenal. If you're into dark fiction, please give this a read. You will not regret it.

Dislike

I struggled through most of this book. It was slow and predictable and I couldn't even be bothered to care about any of the characters. Worse, it was sentimental, and I just wasn't having it. Listening to this entire thing was a chore, although I think the reader's performance improves the experience of the novel.

I really enjoyed this listen. This book by Patricia Lee Macomber was such a light book of the paranormal in this modern detective story that even teenagers could enjoy this listen. When I started to listen to this book I found myself diving right in from the start. This is one of the books that you want to listen to from start to finish. Wish I could have but did listen in 3 sessions. Headphones on and then I found myself inside the book like sitting at a movie theater. Sitting back and watching the scenes unfold.

What I really enjoyed was that Patricia did not go overboard with the details. Just the right amount for the scenes she was writing about. You knew at most times what the characters were thinking and going to do in certain scenes. Found myself wanting to say, Dont go in there, dont be foolish. You know what is going to happen to you. Not that it was obvious just that each scene was clear as to what was going on.

So now moving into the book itself. There is 4 main characters. Of course, Jason Callahan, the detective, his side partner psychic Trina Dane, Chloe Marsh and the Entity. Trina pulls Jason in on a case that she feels, is drawn into by her psychic powers that this woman Chloe Marsh that was pronounced dead at the scene of an accident and then hours later sits up and is alive. The more and more awake she becomes Chloe starts developing these special powers.

Jason reluctantly agrees to head off to Florida to rest Trinas concerns are going to be unfounded. Unfounded they were not. Jason gets so pulled into the case, as he starts to find links to other similar cases across the country. How did Chloe get these powers? From the woman at the bar she knew? Asking her for a ride home when she locked her keys in her car. While heading home to get her spare key since and she did not live far from the bar the woman agreed to take her back to her car. Then all of the sudden the woman goes and pulls over and before Chloe realizes she is being attacked by her. The next thing Chloe finds herself waking up in the hospital being told that she was dead for several hours. She was a miracle. So everyone thought but, Chloe.

Very enjoyable story

I really enjoyed this story, well written and good character development. However, I did not enjoy Sandy Rustin as the narrator. For me her voice was just too high pitched and I struggled listening to her.

Clean, refreshing, funny, and a great story . . . social worker, Holly Anna, just diagnosed with a rare cancer, with only a year to live, keeps the news to herself . . . choosing instead to bless others through random acts of kindness . . . most think her humility and world view are hokey . . . her faith in God a silly thing . . . and even her siblings treat her like a child . . . but she stays the course . . . only her best friend, Jamie knows that Holly has been served a death sentence, and both of them struggle with what lies ahead . . . when Jamie's van is reported leaving the home of one of Holly's "random acts of kindness" deeds (cleaning the house of one of her clients) . . . where Holly has just found a man murdered and lying in the floor . . . a string of mysterious murders begin, all eerily similar to the one which Holly fled . . . including the presence of more cleaning supplies just like the ones that Holly left behind in her haste at the first murder scene . . . add to that, the appearance of Chase, the police officer assigned to the case . . . and an old high school heart throb . . . and you've got a recipe for . . . well, for a deliciously written mystery and romance . . . and a clean one! i found my favorite narrator in Sandy Rustin

the narrator made the story come alive for me. The raw emotions were so relatable. I had to push pause a few times because of the bad decisions Holly made at times just to recoup. lol I just bought the next book....

I wouldn't say time well spent but it was okay since I was crocheting while I listened. There was too much focus on Holly's illness, which by the way, did not make the book better!

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Certainly didn't keep me on the edge of my seat. But since since I wanted to see if it was going to Develop into a really good mystery hung in there.

Still enjoyable...

G. A. McKevett is still writing entertaining stories. Her characters continue to grow with every installment. If you're a cozy mystery fan, you won't want to miss this series. I also recommend starting with the first book.

another good McKevett mystery.....the characters were believable and the story interesting. the narrator did a good job with different voices and accents as well as keeping the story flowing

Cute

The voice performance is great, the plot is weak. There is little mystery. The focus is on the recurring characters, and the newlyweds drip saccharine. I don't regret the hours I spent listening, but I was worn out by the cuteness by the last two hours.

Not the best of the series

I guessed the mystery part really quick in this book which is disappointing to me. I didn't enjoy the audio either. I'm not sure if it's just this book or every book in the series but the narrator sounded like she was in the restroom or something. While listening over my car speakers it sounded like an echo like the narrator recorded in an empty room.
