  • Enslaved Minds, Perceptions v Reality, Black History Month USA

Study Coach Podcast acknowledging Black History Month USA. In this show we take a look at a USA psychiatrist perception of freedmen (ex-slaves).  The freedmen (no longer slaves) were considered to be totally dependent on the white person. A different perspective is given by Carter G. Woodson; freed slaves bought land, built their own homes, built schools, churches.

Slaves who ran away or tried to run away from the white people who enslaved them, were considered to be suffering from a form of mental illness, according to Cartwright. The psychiatrist called the disease Drapetomania. From my understanding the psychiatrist argument is that run away slaves were mad to want to part from their oppressors (interesting). • Freedmen (ex-slaves) Self-Help Education, Black History Month USA - Study Coach Podcast

Study Coach Podcast with Morel Benard presenting history of slaves becoming free in the USA and the design of social and educational programmes to facilitate learning. Some educational programmes were Government led in conjunction with charities, others were established by the freedmen and women as described by Carter G. Woodson. Inspiring to learn that the freedmen took the initiative to take on leadership roles and to purchase land and construct schools to educate freed men, women and children. The idea of compulsory education for children up to age 16 is evident from the Port Royal Experience.

  • Black History Month USA, Carter G. Woodson 1863 Port Royal Experiment - Study Coach Podcast

Study Coach Education Podcast with Morel Benard presents shows on the topic of prejudice and discrimination, storytelling is used to educate and entertain listeners. The topic of prejudice and discrimination is a sensitive topic but irrespective of sensitivity we need to talk about the topic and related issues. Study Coach Podcast recently looked at the life of Ignatius Sancho and the life of Anne Frank. To recognise Black History Month USA, Study Coach Podcast will now focus on the life of Carter G. Woodson an American, with the focus on the Port Royal Experiment of 1863.

    Carter G. Woodson

Carter G. Woodson is the man responsible for launching the idea of celebrating black history. In February 1926 Woodson launched the celebration of ‘Negro History Week’ the precursor of Black History Month. There is a view that black history should be celebrated all year round; there is also another view that there is no necessity to have a black history month and what about white history? My belief is that through acknowledging black history we are also acknowledging white history. For example, in reflecting on issues surrounding slavery, then quite clearly we are also talking about white history (distasteful though it might be).

In celebrating Woodson’s contribution to history Study Coach Podcast will focus on the Port Royal Experiment 1863 USA. We will learn that abandoned slaves living in the Port Royal areas became free men and that the Congressional Act of June 7, 1862, whereby the USA Government relinquished its purchases of land, led to freedmen (ex-slaves) being able to work and earn and to purchase acres of land. In 1863 freemen bought 3, 500 acres of land, becoming landowners. In the Port Royal Experiment the freedman entered into an education programme as stipulated by the Congressional Act of 1862. The concept of the freedman includes women and children receiving an education.

  • Prejudice, Race & Religion, 'Us' & 'Them', Discrimination, Anne Frank Diary | Study Coach Podcast

Social categorisation and social identity is alive and kicking. People are categorised into ‘us’ and ‘them’ groups. Social categorisation is sufficient to create a society of prejudice and discrimination. Books, be they factual or fictional such as: ’We are not like them’ ‘How race is made in America: are Italians white’ and other books refers to social categorisation. Study Coach Podcast is interested in understanding people’s attitudes towards prejudice and discrimination, and to encourage people not to chide away from openly talking about discriminatory practices. A member of the British Royal family Meghan Markle (Duchess of Sussex) and her husband Prince Harry have made allegations that Meghan experienced racial discrimination. The media often report that there is racism in the world of football, other sports and business sectors have been accused of practicing prejudice and discrimination. Study Coach Podcast is presented by Morel Benard. Morel is qualified in psychology (the topic of prejudice and discrimination falls under the heading of social psychology). Morel is a narrator and so storytelling is used in presenting shows on prejudice and discrimination. Listeners will find recent shows on the life of Ignatius Sancho, born in Africa (1729) and transported to live in Greenwich, London UK at age 2. This week’s show features the life of Anne Frank, a young Jew girl, born 1929 and who lived under Nazi Germany discriminatory rules. We learn about prejudice and discrimination through Anne Frank’s diary (the young girl kept a diary from 1942 - 1944). Please Subscribe to Study Coach Podcast.
