Social Workers, Rise!

Support for Kids who have Lost

Listen Later

Have you ever struggled with how to support a child or a teenager through a huge loss?
This episode we talk with Kimberly Rango, MSW who is currently an oncology social worker. Since COVID-19, she has been going tech based with her medical social work and support groups via zoom. We discuss the benefit of support groups and how they can combat the affects of loneliness in people.
Kimberly shares what you need to know to support kids & teens dealing with grief and secondary loss. The basics of what her patients need when they come to her office are to feel heard, to be respected, and to have someone care about what's happening in their lives and their family's lives.
We talk about using the HALT (Hungry? Angry? Lonely? Tired?) method when feeling stressed or overwhelmed as well as ways to support children through loss or major changes such as including children in conversations about care and loss as well as using the Scream Box activity.
