Christ, who has ascended to the right hand of God the Father, gives gifts to his church for its edification. These gifts are men who are gifted with the ability to preach the Word of God so that the saints might be equipped and built up in the faith.

This section on the Bible focuses on the use of Scripture. Even though the Bible was written in Hebrew and Greek, the truth remains when it is translated into a common language. There is a need for translations so that Christians can search the Scriptures themselves. The Bible is also its own infallible interpreter and is the final authority in all controversies.

Paul transitions to the application to section to give the Ephesian church concrete ways they can live as one body. He exhorts them to walk worthy of their calling, bear with one another, and endeavor to keep the bond of unity. All these things must be done with a disposition of humility, gentleness, and long-suffering. The Christian Church is made up of sinful people and we must continually strive to be united.

Drawing from Old Testament language, Jesus asserts that He is the True Vine, which is claiming that He is the True Israel. Israel in Old Testament was a fruitless branch bearing sin and idolatry. But those who abide in the True Vine will bear much fruit by difficult seasons of pruning. All this is for the glory of God and for our joy.

After God wrestles with Jacob assuring him of His protection, Jacob prepares to meet Esau. But Jacob's concerns were incorrect as Esau embraces his brother Jacob and they reconcile. They eventually part ways as Jacob finally arrives in the land of Canaan.

After his digression, Paul returns to his prayer to God for the whole family in heaven and earth, namely the Church. He prays that they would be strengthened with might in the inner man, that they would comprehend the love of Christ, and that they would be filled with the fullness of God. While individuals must believe, the place where these things primary occur is in the Church.

The confessions starts with the principal of knowing God which is the Holy Scriptures. The Bible is the only rule of all saving knowledge, faith, and obedience. While God has revealed himself in various ways in time past, the written Word is the only source of revelation for God's people today.

Paul expands on the significance of the New Creation. Gentiles, who were once alienated from Old Covenant and from Old Testament Israel, have not been brought near by the blood of Christ. Jesus is the peace that brings Jew and Gentiles together to form one people of God and one household of God. This household is built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets with Christ being the cornerstone.

In Ephesians 2-1-10, Paul reminds the Ephesians of what they once were- dead to sin. Paul does this to remind them of the riches of God's love seen in making those dead Ephesians alive together with Christ. Believers have been raised and are seated with Christ as part of the new creation in Jesus.

Confessions are helpful tools that give a summary what the Bible says. They do not have the same authority as Scripture but are helpful protections against things that the Bible does not teach. Every Christian has a standard that they hold to for interpreting Scripture whether it be documents that are precise or whether it is a person's own presuppositions.
