We interview Dr. Dyneah Classen, Director of Health for the Carthage System and chat about misconceptions of animal agriculture and how those of us actively engaged in the farming profession can help those not lucky enough to be able to visit farms better understand our practices and way of life. While Dyneah and Clayton both grew up actively visiting pig farms (Dyneah's pigs were right outside her front door!), we discuss how difficult it is to get our own children physically onto a farm to educate them about our profession and industry while sharing some light and fun stories about our experiences with kids on farm. Dyneah shares her tips for engaging online, particularly what types of posts she finds are most interesting to our non-ag friends and family as well as how to handle the occasional online troll trying to create mischief.

About Our Guest:
Joe & Ben Wipf have been in the Pork Industry for over 15 years (Joe for 15 and Ben for 10) originally starting as a farrow to finish Barn. In the Winter of 2017 tragedy struck as the finish Barn caught fire and burned to the ground which was a total loss due to an electrical fixture. The Wipf brothers continued for a year without a finishing Barn raising pigs to anywhere from 20 to 50 pounds and then shipping them. About a year later they decided to build an isowean. 2500 sows batch farrowing, and have continued with that over the last 5 years and to this day.
Everypig is an innovative software for the Pork Industry, founder Chris Bomgaars joins us to discuss:
About Our Guest:
Chris grew up in Orange City, Iowa. In 2008, he saw an opportunity to join the family pork production business. As he began to buy and raise feeder pigs, he saw the writing on the wall; it was time to go big or go out of business. The venture was a success and scaled from about 30 farms to over 350 farms and started raising over 1.5 million pigs per year (2018). As the company grew, so did the problems—from spiking death loss to sinking caregiver morale. In search of an answer to his company’s issues, Chris searched for a market solution, but none existed. That’s when EveryPig was born, a first-of-its-kind pig health and production management platform.
Dr. Clayton Johnson & Dr. Attila Farkas from Carthage Veterinary Service, LTD discuss recent developments with African Swine Fever (ASF) testing programs here in the United States. Dr. Attila explains how he was able to leverage his network of swine veterinarians in Romania to partner with USDA, National Pork Board & Plum Island Animal Disease Center to collect the already approved whole blood samples as well as oral fluids from Romanian swine farms undergoing an acute ASF outbreak. These samples will be transferred from the Romanian team to the United States for testing at Plum Island with the goal of helping us understand if oral fluids can be utilized as part of a comprehensive ASF testing program here in the United States. Learn about how these samples may have a dramatic impact on ASF control not only in the United States but around the world.

Dr. Clayton Johnson & Dr. Claire LeFevre from Carthage Veterinary Service, LTD chat about their learnings from the 31stAnnual Carthage Swine Conference. Focused on how to acquire and develop skilled labor for our swine farms, the conference gave a detailed overview of the TN Visa program. This program provides skilled labor resources to many industries including animal agriculture. While the TN Visa program can be easily described in a few sentences, setting up and establishing this talent pipeline is no small task and takes dedicated resources to identify talent then recruit and retain them. We also review ho integrating new TN Visa employees into your farms and communities is a critically important task. Dr. Claire offers some tips and observations from her own experiences with integrating the TN Visa workforce, highlighting how you can tap into this talent rich resource pool in an increasingly competitive labor market.
