Today we're talking about boundaries and how to use them. Welcome to Take the Upgrade Podcast Episode 36! Your host and therapist is Leanne Peterson and she's joined by her co-host Natalie Pyles to discuss how boundaries are actually the kindest way to live.

Leanne starts out by pointing out the symptoms that may be showing up in our lives letting us know that we need boundaries. It's super interesting to realize that the resentful side of you or the flakey side of you might just be the result of not honoring your boundaries. We have to recognize what we need. When we start taking care of ourselves this way we elevate the way we are showing others to treat us as well.

This doesn't have to mean that we engage in a series of awkward conversations where we establish our boundaries with others. You can just decide what you are going to do and start doing it. When your friend cancels on you - what are you going to do? When someone raises their voice in an argument with you - what are you going to do?

This is the most loving thing you can do for yourself and for the other people in your life.

Watch out for this scenario: Things that should have felt good, like relaxing, felt bad. And, things that should have felt bad, like working all of the time, felt good. We don't always have to be in motion. Leanne is learning how to come to terms with finding peace in the down time. The parasympathetic nervous system regenerates when we sit still and breathe, so taking time for rest is not a waste!

It's being said that Millennials are the burn out generation. What we need to do is talk yourself into rest by thinking of it as an investment, a necessity not as an accessory. Leanne challenges you to sit down today and just let yourself feel peace.

Bittersweet is a word you might use to describe the first year of motherhood - so magical and so exhausting! Welcome to Take the Upgrade Episode 34. Leanne Peterson is your host and she's joined by her co-host Natalie to discuss the first year of motherhood.

Whether you are preparing for motherhood or you are already in the middle, there are a few things you can do today to make life simpler. Plan help. How are you going to get help from friends and family? Leanne recommends letting loved ones help you, even stay with you, and for after, hiring a mother's helper in advance to help do some of the tasks like grocery shopping and vacuuming that you don't need to be the one to do.

Leanne just finished her first year of motherhood and for Natalie, the memories of that season are a little more distant, but they both absolutely site tiredness to be the number one challenge. This is why planning for help will be so important to the saving of your sanity.

Leanne shares other great tips about not falling into the most common mistake first-year moms make, which is being the gate keeper to their baby. Let your husband learn to care for the baby, too. This sets an awesome and healthy precedent for the child's whole life.

Other great tips from today's discussion include how to manage worries that you're not teaching your child everything you should be - to what books to read - to making intentional rather than reactionary choices. Thanks so much for tuning in for our discussion on motherhood!
