Talkin' Hockey - The Hockey Talkin' Show

Spring (Leagues) have sprung and the boys are back at it with another action packed episode - today we're highlighting the 1999-00 New Jersey Devils.  Though they didn't sport co-host Jared's favourite red, green and white uni variation, the pride of the Garden State hoisted the cup for the second time in the decade, once again backed by all time stellar 'tendy Marty Brodeur!  A balanced attack featuring Elias, Arnott, Holik, Sykora and rookie of the year winner Scotty Gomez, with Captain Crunch Scott Stevens patrolling the blue line alongside Scott Neidermayer, Brian Rafalski and Ken Daneyko - they topped the Stars 4-2 in the finals and the rest as they say is history!

Oddly enough those Devils went on a run following a coaching change with 8 games remaining (Ftorek out, Big Bird in) and the news of the day comes from Vegas where the Knights replaced Bruce Cassidy with our ol' pal Johnny Tortilla with . . . 8 games remaining.  Spooky stuff kids!  Plus we talk about playoff races tightening up and do a double dip into the ol' listener email bag!

Oh baby for sure, for sure!  We're back and this week we're talkin' Tampa, as in the 2003-04 Cup winning Lightning!  Lead by league leading scorer Martin St. Louis, a couple of beautiful baby Bolts in Vinny Lecavalier and Brad Richards, vets Dave Andreychuk, Cory Stillman and Freddie Modin - this deep squad was coached by salty ol' John Tortarella aka Johnnie Tortilla!  A solid D-corps and the 'Bulin wall between the pipes helped them breeze through the first two rounds before being taken the distance by the Flyers in the semis and the Flames in the finals.  Great team that paved the way for Tampa hockey culture to come!

In the second, we're talkin' PWHL takeover here at True North.  An action filled matchup between Montreal and Ottawa left the raucous crown happy and locals wondering if an expansion team might be on the horizon - something we'll discuss!  And then we've got a U Sports finals recap, featuring a long awaited Huskies vs. Huskies matchup!

Finally, we dip into the mailbag to hypothesize whether or not the Hawks can make a move for pending FA sniper Jason Robertson in the offseason - and of course, we've got week 4 of the Upper Deck pack attack!

Oh baby, we've got an action packed show for you tonight - it was a big weekend of big hockey action all over the map and we've mostly lived to tell the tales!

First off, we're talkin' the '91-'92 Chicago Blackhawks - fresh off a President's Cup winning season that ended in first round defeat, ol' Iron Mike Keenan decided his team needed a little more grit and shipped out a number of Hawks mainstays, including longtime blueline stalwart Doug Wilson, as well as as 7 or 8 others.  The new squad lead by young superstar Jeremy Roenick, as well as a solid D corps lead by Chris Chelios and Steve Smith and young superstar goalie tandem Eddie "The Eagle" Belfour and Dominik "The Dominator" Hasek ran through the Campbell Conference before falling to the Penguins in 4 straight.

Then in the second, it's all about what's to be done with big bag Radko Gudas who's ruining seasons across the league - first it was Sid the Kid, now it's Toronto Papi (though his season may have been done long ago!).  Who can stop this menace?  Doesn't seem like any of the other 'Buds are up to the challenge.  Then we shift our focus to the playoff races around the league that are heating up - are our own Winnipeg Jets gettin' hot at the right time?  How about the Sens and the Jackets - can they continue to hang on?

We'll talk about the big international announcement - the return of the World Cup of Hockey to be hosted in 1998 in Prague, Edmonton and Calgary.  Plus, co-host Tom has more Stat Lines than we know what to do with!

In the third, we salute the Juicii Sorrows, your 2025/26 Garage League Champions!  The took down Les Ales Awerchuks in a nailbiter this past Saturday night to hoist the cup!  

Plus we've got packs to rip and a trio of great songs from artists coming to Birds Hill in July.

Hey, episode 22 is here and it's time to get quackin'!  

We're talkin' the Anaheim Ducks, who were still mighty, but started to sorta take themselves seriously with this Cup winning team! Lead by the Bros Neidermeyer and big ol' Chris Pronger and a tidy 'tendy tandem of Giguere and Bryzgalov, this squad was far from fowl.  Upfront, they featured a balanced attack up front featuring Teemu and his bionic knee, plus future Sid-sideman Chris Kunitz and young ducklings Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf!  Plus, who the heck remembers Andy McDonald?!?  They capped off a heckuva year by dispatching the Sens in 5, winning their only cup to date.

In the second frame, we recap a busy trade deadline that saw some big names moved, with the Avs somehow coming out with a stronger squad, solidifying their Cup chances.  Plus, Chevy finally made a move, finally shipping out the Stanimal and Luke Schenn. We think it's the smart play, but we're certainly in the minority as the local hockey "experts" seem to think #64 should have been a Jet post-deadline.

We also take a look back at our pre-season predictions and see if we could actually see into the future, or if we were simply just wrong again.  All this plus an Upper Deck pack attack and a trio of great tunes!

First up, we're talkin' the final cup winner from Long Island, the 82-83 Islanders - this was the season where this juggernaut finally ran outta steam, but they still claimed their 4th cup in a row on the backs of Bossy and Butchie, Tonelli, Gilles, Potvin and Trottier, a coupla of young Sutter brothers and a heckuva tandem between the pipes - Battlin' Billy Smith and Rollie the Goalie!  The dispatched the young Oilers in four straight, who then went on a 4 cup run of their own!

We've got a great stat line of the week, featuring the new kid on the Island, tearin' it up as an 18 year old phenom and ready to lead the Isles back to  greatness!  We'll talk Jets post Olympics, they seem to like playing bonus hockey all the sudden, and then we do a deep dive in advance of Friday's trade deadline!

And in the third, we're talkin' GHL playoffs and ripping some sweet Upper Deck packs for our latest card battle - double 99's are a great start!

After surviving the early wake up call yesterday along with the rest of the nation, the boys are here to talk a little hockey and since we're hittin' the season halfway point more or less, we're throwing a curve ball and talkin' Team Canada, but this one's from the greatest (?!?) tourney ever played - the 1987 Canada Cup!  With names like Gretzky, Lemieux, Messier, Hawerchuk, Coffey, Murphy and Fuhr, the squad in red and white was a who's who of the best in Canada at the time.  We took on the world, and secured the cup in epic fashion, defeating the Soviet Union in game 3 of the best of 3 take all!  There's never going to be another one like it, so go watch these games wherever you can Sparky!

Then, we recap the double heartbreak from Italy, as both the Men's and Women's squads lose their quest for Olympic gold vs the USA - in overtime no less!  Should 3 on 3 play determine the winners on such a worldwide scale?  Could a 75% Sid helped the Canadian squad?  Who got the easy A's graded for their play?  And is it to early to look ahead to the French Alps in 2030?

Then, we wrap up Garage League regular season play and hunt for 'tendys in the Pro Set Pack Attack!

After a week off, the boys are back at it on a holiday Monday feelin' rested, relaxed and ready to talk some hockey in this extended Riel Day episode!

We'll tell you about the 1971-72 Bruins, a squad the seemed to be on the cusp of a dynasty with 3 finals appearances and 2 titles. Lead by the likes of Espo, Orr, Bucyk, Sanderson, Stanfield, McKenzie, Cashman, Westfall and ol' stiched up Gerry Cheevers between the pipes, this team was a real wagon until the league caught up to them, and #4's career was cut short.  They wouldn't drink from Lord Stanley again until beating the Canucks in 2010-11!

In the second, we've all sorts of Olympic hockey to touch on as both the Canadian Men's and Women's teams chase gold in Italy. The men's squad has been very business like thus far, and seems primed for a finals appearance provided that the 'tendys hold up.  The women's team has certainly missed Marie Phillip-Poulin up front, but appear to be back on track for a golden matchup vs their rivals from the US.

In the third, we recap a great day for hockey at Apuckalypse, plus detail the final week of the GHL season which hits this week.  And co-host Jared talks about heading to Hali for an excellent donair and some Moosehead's action!

After an action packed weekend full of all sorts of hockey goodness, your favourite co-hosts are talkin' teal as we dive into all sorts of expansion goodness with the 1991-92 San Jose Sharks!  While they may have been fashionable on the ice in those great looking uni's, this rag tag team full of castoffs stunk out the old Cow Palace (no small feat!!) by only winning 17 games all season - with only 3 victories coming on the road!  Lead by the pride of Foxwarren, Patty Falloon and not much else, this squad was all Shark and no bite!

In the second, we've got a whole plethora of topics to cover including Tanglin' 'Tendys, Trotzy shufflin' into the sunset and a cool statline.  Plus we'll tell you about our favourite all time goal celebrations - past and present!

In the third, we'll tell you about an action-packed Garage League weekend, which included a huge comeback win for the Stouts - plus we recap an amazing skate at Canada Life on Sunday night!

It's Co-Host Tom's Birthday and we're here to tell you all about the 2016-17 Colorado Avalanche!

Though some of the names are sure familiar, this squad ain't the juggernaut that you're used too - they finished at the bottom of the Central and in the basement for the Western Conference with one of the worst seasons in recent history!  Sure, they were led by Nasty Nate, Captain Gabe and Mikko the Moose, but their 48 points led them to their lottery where they lost again - but somehow they still got the grand prize - Cale Makar with the 4th pick overall in 2017/18!  Rookie coach Jared Bednar arrived in a rush at the beginning of the season, replacing a hot-headed legend behind the bench, and he hasn't missed a post-season since!

Then we talk Jet's - they just got dusted by the Wings, and the Coach and the GM are talkin' about the uphill battle, but it seems like it might just be time to pack it in!  Plus, the birthday boy slides into Chevy's slacks to decided whether or not the Stanimal should be shipped out of town! Also, what in the name of Bobby Baun is going on in the big smoke?  Wee Willy may have finally flipped, but Cappy Pappy doesn't have a thing to say! 

Finally, we talk a frozen 4 x 4 at down at the club, catch up on some viral GHL action and add player four to our respective Pro-Set squads!
