  • TBP 212: Buffalo’s Most Traumatic Sports Moments

On this ominous episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran is joined for a second consecutive time by buddy and recurring guest Joe from NYC and today they’re inflicting pain on Buffalo sports fans by re-living some of the most traumatic moments in Buffalo sports history.

As if getting by in today’s world wasn’t hard enough, Patrick and Joe make it worse by deep diving into a handful of memories sure to drudge up anguish among the Buffalo faithful.  Topics covered of course include Wide Right, No Goal and the Music City Miracle, with the guys adding opinions and tidbits for each.

They also discuss Steve Johnson’s big drop in overtime, the Bills overtime loss to Dallas on Monday Night Football despite Tony Romo throwing for five picks.  game seven of the 2006 NHL Eastern Conference finals, Chris Drury and Daniel Briere leaving the Sabres on the same day and plenty more, including a handful of moments Joe brings up  Patrick either forgot or didn’t want to remember.

Also, memories of the late WWE legendary Howard Finkel are shared and Joe finishes things off has a hot take on Terry and Kim Pegula.

We’d also like to take this opportunity to wish the best for the parents of one of our colleagues.  Jeff Boyd is a regular segment guest and friend this podcast as well as a key member of the 716 Sports Podcast.  He recently announced his father has tested positive for the Coronavirus. • TBP #211: Are Josh Allen Haters Justified?

On this episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran hooks up with buddy and recurring guest Joe from NYC to discuss several things, including an examination of the perceived national negative assessment of Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen and if it’s warranted or unfair.

The guys disagree with several things throughout this episode, including defining what the negativity towards Allen actually is and if it’s mostly fans, bloggers or media doing the lion’s share of driving.  They also spend time discussing why the Buffalo fan base goes united in attack mode against the naysayers while with his predecessor, Tyrod Taylor saw much more division in his defense.

Stats and tweets are used to both support and argue against stances against Allen ranging from rightfully critical to straight-up hating.  Both guys also offer their opinion on Allen’s ability going forward, if the organization should’ve considered Jameis Winston or Cam Newton this offseason and where they would rank Allen if doing a re-draft of the 2018 rookie quarterback class.

Before getting to Allen, Patrick asks Joe how life’s going in New York City, of course the epicenter of the Coronavirus as Joe shares a few solemn views of the city being brought to it’s knees by this virus.

They conclude the segment by arguing over what are some of the best things in Buffalo, including fireworks over Wegman’s and traffic.

  • TBP 210: Best Of Buffalo With Matt Parrino

On this episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran is joined by the first-ever five time guest on the podcast, Matt Parrino to discuss and do their own version of the Best of Buffalo bracket, inspired by the folks(ssssssss) over at Trainwreck Sports.

Recently, Trainwreck Sports posted a March Madness style bracket featuring 64 of the best things about Buffalo.  Fans vote on each matchup via Twitters with the winners moving on.  This caught the attention of Patrick and impatient to wait out results over the next few weeks, grabbed Matt to go through the brackets, discuss each matchup and come up with the Final Four and ultimately the winner during this episode.

If you want to play along while listening, here’s a link to the Trainwreck Sports Best of Buffalo bracket.

Without giving away spoilers, many matchups didn’t go as expected per the seeding and the entire segment is littered with takes on each contender, with the guys come up with a winner for each matchup all the way through—of course featuring a handful of fun disagreements along the way.

They also discuss one controversial matchup in particular that led to a Twitter spat between Patrick and a few of the guys from Trainwreck.

With any bracket there’s always snubs and this one wasn’t different.  After the segment Patrick returns to highlight a handful of great Buffalo things that were left off the bracket.

Before they get to Best of Buffalo the guys spend a few minutes chatting about what Matt’s been up to, including Coronavirus policies that’s altered the way he covers the Bills beat as well as hi plan to host a weekly Wednesday evening live stream YouTube podcast along with NYup.com colleague Ryan Talbot.

You can follow Matt on Twitter @MattParrino.  Also, be sure to check out his written work at NYup.com and subscribe to the NYup YouTube channel, which features tons of Bills content hosted by Matt.

  • TBP 209: Nate Geary, WGR-550

On this episode of the Talking Buffalo Podcast (now formerly known as Moran-Alytics Podcast) Patrick Moran has an interview with WGR-550 sports talk radio host and recurring guest Nate Geary on a wide variety of topics.

The guys discuss if their life has really changed much, at least personally since the Coronavirus outbreak started spreading in the United States, and if Nate’s approach to his radio job has changed since going from broadcasting primarily at the radio station to doing Sports Talk Saturday shows live from his kitchen due to social distancing.

Both guys being huge fans of wings leads to a lengthy discussion about two of the best spots in Western New York: Nine-Eleven Tavern and Macy’s Place Pizzeria.

Of course, they spend plenty of time talking Buffalo Bills football and Nate has loads of unbiased takes on the acquisition of Stefon Diggs, the spotlight being on Josh Allen, if there’s a lack of confidence in Devin Singletary, some potential draft prospects for the Bills and more.

They also examine if former Bills head coach and current ESPN analyst went too far in his criticism of Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Amari Cooper.

They finish with a Fun Fact Finale segment, where among other things we learn Nate’s first celebrity crush, favorite city he’s visited, a game show he could potentially become a millionaire on and three A-list actors he’d love to have dinner with.

You can follow Nate on Twitter @NateGearyWGR550 and of course check out his work at WGR.com.

Before his conversation with Nate, Patrick spends a few minutes outlining why he decided to change the name of the podcast to Talking Buffalo Podcast (You can read a full post about the change right here.) He also tells a backstory of his new podcast intro song, a jingle many Buffalonians will surely recognize despite it being recorded 40 years ago.

  • EP 208: Rebecca Thornburg, WKBW-TV

On this episode of the future award-winning Moran-Alytics Podcast, Patrick Moran has an interview with Rebecca Thornburg of WKBW-TV Buffalo spanning her life and career.

Born and raised not far from Boston in Milbury, Rebecca discusses growing up a diehard hard fan of all Boston sports teams, especially the Patriots and Red Sox. Admittedly spoiled by all her hometown sports success, Rebecca discusses the heartbreak she felt when she found out—on her birthday that Tom Brady was leaving the Patriots after 20 years for Tampa.

From a very young age Rebecca knew she wanted a career in television/media and that was evident even as a 10-year old when she created her own little show called “The Rebecca Show,” filmed by her twin sister.

Rebecca provides insight as to why she went to Syracuse University for college and some of the things she did there as well as the internships that helped her hone her craft.

It ultimately led to Rebecca getting her first “real” job in the news media at WKBW-TV. She discusses how that opportunity came about and the process she went through with it.

They also spend time talking work adjustments that’ve taken place due to the Coronavirus outbreak, her takes on social media, why she started her own blog, thoughts in living in Buffalo for nearly two years now and then Rebecca comes STRONG with a few wing takes—takes that clearly wins Patrick over.

Of course, they conclude with the traditional Mini-Lightning Round and we learn plenty of fun facts about Rebecca, including her first celebrity crush, what new tune she wants to make her signature karaoke song, what she may be doing were she in another line of work and three guests she’d love to have over for dinner and drinks in a non-Coronavirus world.

You can follow Rebecca on Twitter @RebeccaWKBW, follow her work at WKBW.com and also check out her own blog at BeccaThornburg.com.

  • EP 207: Jeff Boyd Talks Bills, Pegula’s, Coronavirus & More

On this episode of the future award-winning Moran-Alytics Podcast, Patrick Moran is joined by recurring guest Jeff Boyd from the 716 Sports Podcast and Buffalo Twenty as they discuss a wide range of topics, mostly but not limited to Buffalo sports.

The guys start by examining if the Buffalo Bills overpaid by sending four draft picks to the Minnesota Vikings for Stefon Diggs while also taking a look at the new  new look Bills defensive line, power ranking their positional needs, wondering if the team should consider signing quarterback Jameis Winston and playing out a fantasy trade scenario involving Christian McCaffrey.

They both also offer opinions on the five greatest wide receivers in NFL history.

From there the guys hit ona few topics related to the Sabres, including examining if the Coronavirus outbreak may help Jason Botterill get a fourth season as the team’s GM as well as thoughts on the Pegula’s large community donation  overshadowed by shady business dealings that’s made a  chunk of the public furious with ownership.

Before rolling into sports the guys spend some time talking about the Coronavirus,  how it’s directly impacted their daily lives and some of the things they’re watching to help pass the time.

  • EP 206: Evan Silva, Establish The Run (Fantasy Football)

Coming up on today’s future award-winning Moran-Alytics Podcast, Patrick Moran has a chat with fantasy football expert Evan Silva on a variety of football topics including many pertaining to the Buffalo Bills.

The Bills haven’t made many moves so this offseason that carry heavy fantasy football impact, but the one they did looms large.  The team traded four draft picks including a first-rounder to Minnesota in exchange for Stefon Diggs, who instantly becomes the team’s clear cut No. 1 wide receiver.  Evan gives his thoughts on the trade, Buffalo’s compensation to get him, how he fits in the Buffalo offense from both a schematic and fantasy aspect and if they would’ve been wiser to keep the first round pick to draft a rookie instead.

Evan’s also got thoughts on Josh Allen, who in his second year as a starter became one of the best quarterbacks in the league from a fantasy perspective and on if he can improve more in 2020.  Also, how much does Diggs’ arrival impact John Brown and Cole Beasley? Evan examines that as well as insight on a pair of good Bills youngsters headed into year two; Devin Singletary and Dawson Knox.

After Buffalo talk to guys go around the league and Evan offers his opinion on the fantasy impact of a handful of big-name players changing teams; including Tom Brady, Todd Gurley, Melvin Gordon, Philip Rivers and several more.

You can follow Evan on Twitter @EvanSilva and of course fantasy football needs to check out what Establish The Run has to offer.

  • EP 205: Buffalo Bills Activate Win-Now Mode

On this episode of the future award-winning Moran-Alytics Podcast, Patrick Moran is joined by recurring guest Joe From NYC to discuss the first handful of days of free agency as the Buffalo Bills have unofficially activated win-now mode.

The Bills traded a first-round pick along with three other draft selections for a true No. 1 wide receiver, Stefon Diggs.  They also gave $30 million over three years to a 32-year old pass rusher (Mario Addison) and signed a 32-year former All-Pro cornerback, Josh Norman.  Those are moves made by a team that feels ready to win their division.

The guys go over the Bills moves and collectively determine Buffalo an organization that has no excuse for not their division.  This leads into a spirited discussion about Josh Allen and this being a make-or-break third season as a starter and what happens in 2021 if Allen doesn’t continue to progress as a starting NFL quarterback.

They also discuss whether Brandon Beane and Sean McDermott should be in any trouble should Allen flame out and end up wagering on how many prime time games Buffalo will have on their schedule.

Beyond football talk they spend time having a serious discussion over the  Coronavirus scare, including how it’s been for Joe in a major conglomerate area like New York City and how people are handling it, which leads to a very rare chat on this podcast about politics and Donald Trump.

They also have a little #rocknwawrow chat before finishing with another spirited discussion about the state of wrestling due to the coronavirus, including if Wrestlemania should’ve postponed until the summer.

  • EP 204: Greg Tompsett On Bills Monday Blockbuster

On this episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast, Patrick Moran is joined by Greg Tompsett of Cover 1 to go over a wild first day of the NFL tampering period as the league year officially began on Monday, both from a Buffalo Bills and league-wide perspective.

As the taping of this podcast began on late Monday evening, the Bills were very quiet except for a linebacker free agent signing a short time before the taping began.  However, things exploded about halfway through the segment when Buffalo traded four picks, including a first-rounder to the Minnesota Vikings for wide receiver Stefon Diggs. This forced the guys to have to react in real time and needless to say, they were both excited and frankly a little shook.  (Shortly after taping they added defensive end Mario Addison as well.)

They also saw now former defensive end Shaq Lawson bolt for divisional rival Miami, signing a three-year, $30 million deal.  The day also saw linebacker Christian Kirksey, who visited Buffalo last week sign a two-year deal with Green Bay.  Cornerback Chris Harris and Jordan Howard were rumored to have interest from the Bills although no deals were reported as of  the end of Monday night.

Around the NFL it was a whirlwind day with both trades and free agent agreements.  The shocker was a trade between Arizona and Houston that sent running back David Johnson and two picks to Houston in exchange for a pick and DeAndre Hopkins, one of the best receivers in football. The guys chime in on that as well as the deal between San Francisco and Indianapolis that brought the Colts DeForest Buckner and a slew of big money deals, including Amari Cooper,  Jack Conklin, Arik Armstead, Ereck Flowers and several more.

  • EP 203: Bruce Nolan Plays Bills GM

On this episode of the future-award winning Moran-Alytics Podcast, Patrick Moran has a chat with recurring guest Bruce Nolan from the Nick & Nolan Show and among other things, Bruce puts on his GM hat to replace Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane and construct what Bruce thinks is a great Bills offseason.

To say Bruce took the task of replacing Beane seriously for the purpose of this exercise seriously is a gross understatement.  They start by going over the four pending free agents he re-signed to contracts, five if you include Quinton Spain who re-signed (for real) on Thursday.  One of those five are surprising considering the Josh Norman signing earlier this week.  Bruce elaborates on why he inked Kevin Johnson two a new two-year deal with a nice bump in pay.

They also spend time discussing the pending free agents he says goodbye to, including a pair of well known vets he didn’t feel were good marriages for the organization going forward.

Before getting to free agency Bruce gave the axe to a pair of veterans and dished out huge money to extend three key players totaling $135 million in contract extensions.

Bruce merely supplemented the roster with free agency, signing seven players but none of them exceeding $12 million for the duration of their contract.

Lastly was a draft, but with a twist.  The draft was simulated live in real time, meaning Bruce didn’t know ahead of time who he’d be able to draft.  Despite a consensus that fans would be calling for a wide receiver with the 22nd pick Bruce threw a big curveball and went offensive tackle, with a defensive end going in round two before landing on a wide receiver in the third.  The draft, and Bruce’s offseason additions ended with him taking a corner in the fourth round.

Beyond setting up the Bills for the 2020 season the guys spend time discussing the coronavirus that is ravaging the sports world and of course general society before settling into lighter talk around Bruce and his podcast co-host Nick Bat’s recent appearance on WGR Sports Talk Saturday and the guys trying beef on weck, wings and chicken fingers at Kelly’s Korner in North Buffalo.

You can follow Bruce on Twitter @BruceExclusive and of course be sure to check out the Nick and Nolan Show with Bruce and co-host Nick Bat every Thursday and Friday, available everywhere podcasts are found.
