Ep 38 – MI for vaccine hesitancy
Glenn and Sebastian welcomed Amanda Gabarda, EdD, MPH, NBC-HWC for a timely discussion about vaccine hesitancy. Amanda is the Senior Director of Clinical Training & Development for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Health Plan where she is responsible for designing, scaling, and evaluating evidence-based care management and health coach training, quality assurance, and coaching interventions for digital, telephonic, and in-person coaching. Her work focuses on setting a standard of excellence to positively impact health and increase patient/member engagement and activation through coaching and the use of Motivational Interviewing. She is passionate about combining coaching and behavior change science to empower individuals to live their best and healthiest lives.
Motivational Interviewing for vaccine hesitancy
Amanda explores how Motivational Interviewing can support respectful conversations about vaccination when people feel uncertain, cautious or conflicted. Rather than trying to win an argument, the practitioner can seek to understand concerns, support autonomy and create conditions in which the person can consider information and their own reasons for a decision.
The episode also examines ethics, language choice and the difference between conversations that increase pressure and those that reduce it. These themes connect with Acceptance in Motivational Interviewing, Information Exchange and the Fixing Reflex.
