చేతిలో పుస్తకం ఉండాల్సిన వయసులో.. కర్ర పట్టుకుని మేకలను కాసేవారు!
కానీ.. చదువుకోవాలనే పట్టుదల మాత్రం ఆయనను అక్కడే ఆగనివ్వలేదు!
కామారెడ్డి జిల్లాలోని ఓ మారుమూల గ్రామంలో నిరక్షరాస్య కుటుంబంలో పుట్టిన డా. అట్టెం దత్తయ్య గారు చిన్నతనంలోనే చదువుకు దూరమయ్యారు. దాదాపు ఎనిమిదేళ్ల పాటు గొర్రెల కాపరిగా ఉంటూ.. అడవిలో గొర్రెలను కాస్తూనే పుస్తకాలు చదివారు.
ఒక స్నేహితుడు వేసిన కొన్ని ప్రశ్నలు ఆయన జీవితాన్నే మార్చేశాయి. మళ్లీ చదువుకోవాలని నిర్ణయించుకుని.. పాత పుస్తకాలు తెచ్చుకుని చదువుకున్నారు. ఇంగ్లీష్, మ్యాథ్స్ నేర్చుకోవడానికి ఉపాధ్యాయుల సహాయం తీసుకున్నారు. పగలు పిల్లలకు పాఠాలు చెబుతూ.. రాత్రి కాలేజీలో చదువుకున్నారు. అలా పట్టుదలతో చదువుకుంటూ ఉస్మానియా యూనివర్సిటీలో ఉన్నత విద్యను అభ్యసించి.. చివరకు అధ్యాపకుడిగా ఎదిగారు.
అయితే.. ఆయన ప్రయాణం చదువుతోనే ఆగిపోలేదు. చిన్నప్పటి నుంచే విన్న భారతం, రామాయణం, ప్రవచనాలు ఆయనలో సాహిత్యంపై ఆసక్తిని పెంచాయి. ఆ ఆసక్తే ఆయనను రచన వైపు నడిపించింది. అలా… 2010 నుంచి కవితలు, కథలు రాస్తూ వస్తున్న ఆయనకు.. తన జీవిత అనుభవాలతో రాసిన ‘బతుకు బండి’ కథ మంచి గుర్తింపు తీసుకొచ్చింది.

At an age when he should have been carrying books, he was carrying a stick and herding goats.
But his determination to study never allowed him to stop there.
Born into an illiterate family in a remote village in Kamareddy district, Dr. Attem Dattaiah Garu had to leave his education at a young age. For nearly eight years, he worked as a shepherd. Yet, while grazing sheep in the forest, he continued reading books.
A few questions asked by a friend changed the course of his life. He decided to return to education and began studying with old books. He sought the help of teachers to learn English and Mathematics. During the day, he taught children, and at night, he attended college. With determination and hard work, he pursued higher education at Osmania University and eventually went on to become a lecturer.
But his journey did not end with education.
The stories of the Mahabharata, Ramayana, and spiritual discourses he had heard since childhood developed a deep interest in literature. That interest eventually led him towards writing. Since 2010, he has been writing poems and stories, and his story ‘Bathuku Bandi’, inspired by his own life experiences, brought him recognition.
So, how did a man who once herded goats go on to become a writer and lecturer? How did his determination to study transform his life? What experiences inspired him to pursue literature? What personal experiences lie behind his story ‘Bathuku Bandi’? And what has his journey as a writer been like?
