Township 7 winemaker Mary McDermott returns to Tasting Room Radio.

When we started this food and wine adventure, it was from a studio in a barn on the Naramata Bench. The closest vineyard out the windows was Township 7.

I was determined to ask questions & learn from those around me. The people actually doing the planting, pruning, growing, harvesting and blending.

That’s when I first met Township 7 leaders Mike Raffan and Lori Pike. Mike led the growing team in the vineyards and the making of the wines. Lori handled marketing and promotion. They taught me my first lessons on the rules of the wine road.

Eventually Mike and Lori moved to another vineyard in the famed Russian River Valley in Sonoma. This vineyard is beautiful.
Back at Township 7 on the Naramata Bench, Winemaker Mary McDermott was redefining what Township 7 could produce.
Mary also specialized in Seven Stars sparkling wines. They continue to win awards everywhere.
Seven Stars won 3 Gold medals (sparkling wines) in the 2025 Wine Align Nationals for Sirius/Polaris/Nebula – 2 Silver for Aurora/RIGEL Fool’s Gold – 1 bronze for Vega Fool’s Gold.

The T7 portfolio is big and wide. Wine groupings such as Benchmark Series, Infinity Series, Magnum Series, Provenance Series and Interlude Series.

The Interlude Series are the wines we tasted and talked about.
Crafted in BC wines. Harvested in Washington and Four Palms, a Russian River Vineyard we mentioned at the top of this page in Sonoma and created in BC.
Four Palms is the vineyard now owned by Mike Raffan and Lori Pike. The best two people in all of California wine to know what Township 7 was seeking.
Mary and I finished our conversation talking about the Township 7 vineyards in South Langley. The fruit from that area is beginning to get serious notice, especially for sparkling wine production.
2024 Interlude Cabernet Sauvignon (100%)
Big, bold and balanced. A long, beautiful finish. With lots of character.
Double D Vineyard Rocky Beach AVW, Orondo, Washington. Aged 18 months in 75% French Oak and 25% American Oak. No new Oak.

2024 Interlude Merlot
Shows beautiful notes of blackberry, ripe cherry, spice and earth.
Same vineyard as the Cab.
The grapes were fermented in two large wood foudres. Aged 18 months in 80% French Oak and 20% American Oak. Again, no new oak.
(think mushroom risotto or aged gouda)

2024 Interlude Red
A Syrah and Pinot Noir blend. Defined as approachable and enjoyable. Notes of cherry, ripe strawberry and a touch of spice. With this particular blend, it’s no surprise that it’s soft and well balanced. The finish goes on forever.
Fermented separately for 18 months in French and American Oak and stainless steel. Nice structure and balance.

2024 Interlude Syrah
Now,
this wine is truly interesting. The Syrah is from Sonoma and Pinot from Washington State.

Here’s a bright, earthy Syrah from California blended with dark fruit and tannins from Oregon and 23% American Oak. Hints of Blueberry, blackberry, and pepper. Aged 18 months in 77% French Oak and 23% American Oak.
No New Oak.

Kismet Estate Winery is entering the heart of Harvest with growing national and international recognition under Head Winemaker Manpreet Dhaliwal, Canada’s first and only South Asian female head winemaker.
Since becoming Head Winemaker in 2023 at age 26, Manpreet has earned 26 national and international wine awards, including 14 medals from her first full vintage alone. This season, Kismet wines received honours from the Decanter World Wine Awards, WineAlign National Awards of Canada, and All Canadian Wine Championships, along with 90-plus point reviews from James Suckling.
The recognition comes during a standout year for Manpreet Dhaliwal, who was also named to the BCBusiness 30 Under 30 Class of 2026.

Her sister Neeham has been just a busy. Organizing the remodeling and culinary visions of Manzil Restaurant. Dinner is led by cashew cream mussels, kale saag and Parsi lamb shank. Lunch is casual and relaxed with butter chicken poutine, beef sliders with mint chutney.
Manzil Restaurant at Kismet Estate Winery is using its new lunch and dinner menus to show two different sides of Indian dining in the South Okanagan.
Dinner moves further into regional cooking with dishes including cashew cream mussels, methi malai kofta, paneer kale saag, and the return of Manzil’s Parsi lamb shank. Lunch has a more relaxed Indian bistro feel, with butter chicken poutine, dahi puri, pork or paneer flatbreads, beef sliders with mint chutney, and masala fries.
The menus were developed alongside Kismet’s estate-grown wine portfolio, with Head Winemaker Manpreet Dhaliwal and the restaurant team considering how fruit, acidity, texture, richness, and spice work across each pairing.

A Directors Cut, in the film/TV world, is the version of a film or series that is the Director's version of what she/he dreamed of making. Not the one the studio made. The Director's Cut allows creative freedom, which is priceless
A Winemaker's Cut is the wine the winemaker intended to make before ownership stepped.
Thus, Michal Mosny's Winemakers Cut wines are exactly what he intended to make, when he and wife Martina moved from Slovakia to Oliver, BC to create New World versions of his wines.
Michal had made wines for "others". Large wineries near and far.
At home, he and Martina watched Hollywood and Vines on Slovakian TV and decided that the Okanagan would be a great new world location to make their wines.
No pollution, lake water everywhere, moderate temperatures and a welcoming wine community.
They brought their passion, knowledge and experience with them.
They dreamt of producing wines that felt true to who they were and true to what they loved. Like a Director's Cut, their winery gave them the freedom to make their own choices and express a unique point of view through the styling, crafting and blending of Okanagan Wine.
Michal presents new 2025 white and red releases.
The whites can be given up to 72 hours of skin contact, all gently pressed, up to 72 hours in vessels.
Wood, Glass, Stainless.
Reds - spontaneous fermentation, barrel aging (French, Slovakian, Hungarian and American Oak) for a maximum of 10 months. All wines un-fined and un-filtered.
Aged in bottle for at least 6 months.
One of the Reds is Q&A. A bold Bordeaux blend made in partnership
with myself and Jason Priestley.

For almost 20 years the wineries of the Naramata Bench above Penticton have
showcased their Spring releases for the food and wine trade and general public in Vancouver.
The 2026 gathering was May 7 at the Vancouver Community College near Gastown.

Naramata Bench has a well-earned reputation within Canadian wine circles, from fellow growers and wine fans.
Laughing Stock had just won Wine (2023 Syrah) and Winery of the Year at the annual Okanagan Spring Wine Festival in Kelowna.
The Bench collectively won close to 10 other awards.

Jeff has studied chemistry for a great deal of his life. It's prepared him to use that knowledge to craft wines.

All successful wineries set standards, but few set the bar higher than Quails Gate.
Very likely why they were the 2026 recipients of the Wine Growers of Canada Award of Distinction.
The Plume Red Collection was born from an extraordinary vintage and a spirit of resilience. Two Winter Cold Snaps, damaged vines, vineyards and wine hearts. In order to save farms and many in the farming community, after much discussion, it was agreed to source grapes for at least a year or two from the US until BC farmers had a chance to replant or save whole fields.
Crafted in the Okanagan Valley from select Washington State vineyards, these wines have quickly earned praise from some of Canada's most respected wine critics.

Senior Quail's Gate Winemaker Jeff del Nin returns to Tasting Room Radio. When we last talked in May we weren't sure how the year would roll out. Now it's time to get caught up on the wines and lives of 2026.

Jeff explains, when they're releasing wines that were not grown by Quails Gate in BC vineyards, then they will always be called Plume.

Discover Garnet Valley Ranch., a quick 7 minute drive from the town of Summerland! The 320-acre ranch is a working farm that is surrounded by natural habitat, organic vineyards, fields of ground crops and a lavender farm.
A small pond attracts more than 70 species of birds and wildlife. With no immediate neighbours, the site is tranquil and relaxing. There are places to hike and horseback riding options, or go off grid, listen to nature, and read a book while you sip wine.

Christine talks about the wines being planted, grown, harvested and released.

Her only “next door” neighbor in Garnet Valley is Alison Moyes and the team at Solvero Wines.

“It was just a dense forested mountainside, very steep slopes, very challenging terrain to farm. But over the course of two years, a 16-acre vineyard was planted in 2016.
Then we started building the winery in 2020 to be able to produce the wines. And then finally, we’ve just finished this beautiful new tasting room and we’re ready to launch this year.”

This destination, is one of the highest vineyards in BC, almost 600 meters. Its perfect for growing their signature releases of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
By hiring Alison Moyes, they’ve found the final piece of the puzzle.
She learned her winemaking craft through years at Stoneboat, Osoyoos Larose and Liquidity.
Enjoy the conversation between winery neighbours. Both creating new wines in a new destination. We get to taste and compare the same varietals from both locations.

One of BC’s most admired new wineries is Pamplemousse. Not only making highly creative natural wines, they are also creating “natural” converts with every season.
Jordan has been making wine in BC since 2010. After working at Cellar Tek, Okanagan Crush Pad and Lightning Rock, Jordan was excited to launch her own project along with her husband Tyler Knight and business partner James Langford-Smith in 2021.
Pamplemousse Jus is natural wine! Neutral vessels, basket press, manual labor and wild ferments create these wines. The wines are made in a garage turned winery with basic winemaking equipment and a whole lot of happy hearts.
The Pamplemousse Jus team works hard, experimenting with unusual blends and winemaking styles to bring you the freshest, yummiest wines possible.

When the recent Top 50 BC wines were announced, at the very top of the list – the wine of the year was
Dirty Laundry’s 2022 Cellar Series Gamay.
“this wine stood out among all entries for it’s exceptional quality and distinctive character, earning the highest honor in the competition.” Okanagan Wine Festivals.

After study at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ont. by 2009, he was making wine and, in 2013, he left See Ya Later Ranch to join Dirty Laundry. Since Mason Spink took over as winemaker in 2013, Summerland’s Dirty Laundry Vineyard has doubled production.
He likes to make serious, interesting wines but they don’t have to be pretentious. Over his time at Dirty Laundry he has been evolving the house style and winning awards. Including #1 at the new Top 50 in BC hosted by the Okanagan Wine Festivals
The vineyards were originally planted in the 1970s and are now some of the Okanagan Valley’s oldest vinifera vines.
Mason takes us through some of their recent releases and their plans for replanting vines lost in the latest winter freeze.

Nothing fancy here, my friends.
No wine reviews.
No food pairings.
No tasting notes.
This particular Tasting Room Radio episode is all about the recent wildfires in and around Summerland, Peachland and parts of West Kelowna.
Over 62,000 acres of fire damage.
150 structures damaged or destroyed. Livestock released and saved. Some lost.
1000’s of residents evacuated. Penticton and surrounding communities took in as many as could be housed. An amazing effort.
BC Wildfire Service brought their training to attack and bring the fires to a hold.
From first smoke to finish it took 21 days.
Here’s where you come in.
The rest of the story is about supporting those affected by the fires.

Christine Coletta will speak about her experience during the Bald Range wildfire and her evacuation, its impact on the community and the growing #SummerlandStrong effort to support Summerland businesses and residents through recovery.

There’s no easy way to tell the Moon Curser story.
You have to consider the amazing efforts of the original owners Chris and Beata Tolley.
They had planned and shaped a wonderful series of vineyards, with varietals that seemed to go on and on.
When they sold the much awarded winery (2019 Best Small Winery in Canada), the winemaking and viticulture became the responsibility of today’s guest, winemaker Christian Scagnetti. His first vintage in Osoyoos was 2018.
After almost 9 years leading the winery team, it’s truly become his vision and craft.
