In this thought-provoking episode, Amy talks to Dr. Jennifer Todd, public health practitioner and founder of Jennifer Todd Wellness. They discuss the importance of wellness in the workplace, why businesses and employers should take this seriously and how it can easily and actively be improved to allow us all to live a healthier and more fulfilled life. They also talk about the impact of the pandemic on the public health sector and many peoples attitudes towards health and wellness.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Asking “How are you feeling today” is such a powerful question to ask people. It opens up a whole new level of conversation with others.
Dr Todd has been interested in public health and wellness since she can remember. She has always had a passion for helping children, mothers and social justice. She discovered the heart of this fascination and interest was ‘wellness’.
She studied and then worked for the federal government on programmes that helped women and children before more recently working in pandemic planning and then teaching pulic health at university.
Since the global pandemic Dr Todd has witnessed a surge in peoples interests in public help and this has translated to people wanting to make a difference, such as enrolling on the courses she teaches.
We are living in a historically difficult time for individuals and businesses. Dr Todd has witnessed some companies that have been very out-of-touch and out-of-sync with their employees lives. Companies need to move forward and work with their employees to improve their health and wellbeing and this can only be done by understanding them and their needs.
Businesses are beginning to understand that the health and wellbeing of their employees and workforce has a direct impact on how well the businesses functions.
Mental health and wellness is still stigmatised. This needs to change, Dr Todd longs for the day when discussing seeing a therapist is on the same level as mentioning a dentist appointment.
It doesn’t have to be complicated. There are many simple ways for managers and employers to offer a healthy environment for their staff, such as good communication, making an effort where it counts and making people feel like that they matter and you are thinking about them authentically.
BEST MOMENTS
“I think this has really jarred employers and businesses into a realisation that they’re going to have to make more of an effort to ensure that employee satisfaction and wellness are more of a priority for their business”
“They’re very aware that they depend on a health workforce in order to get day to day work done”
“A pay check isn’t enough if an incentive to go to go forward and go to work everyday...”
