Amaka also believes in trying to show up and present yourself the best way you can, this is not to minimise illness or fatigue but she always feels just that little bit better if she makes the extra effort, whether that is in her business or in her physical appearance.

Amaka grew up in a society where being fat is just a descriptor. People don't necessarily say it to be rude, they just say it how it is. Despite being a plus-sized child, Amaka was given so much love and support from her parents that she always felt beautiful and she still carries that with her today. Those things early on made her realise how special she really was.

White people can stop racism. A difficult truth for some people to hear but it does not make it any less true. White people need to do more listening to educate themselves about what racism is and the things they can do to start the change that is needed in the world.

In this episode Amy speaks to Emilie Rawlings, creator, author and self-love advocate. Self-care is self-love in action. If we are able to love ourselves it will look like practicing good and frequent self-care. Emilie's journey to self-care started 7 years ago after seeking out help by seeing a counsellor. She found self-care by necessity.

The people around Emilie started to notice and be inspired by the journey she was on. Her mental health was so much better, she was starting to feel like she was healing, from her stress, her anxiety and her OCD. This is when she decided to write her book.

Emilie's book has personal stories in but she describes it as a ‘blueprint’ so others can find the calm, peace and love she has managed to discover.

It’s so easy to fall into the trap of overworking in a lot of Western cultures. It can be seen to be good to be busy all of the time we often “glamourize the grind“, but it actually means that you end up not focusing or doing a good job on the things that matter and many of us then become overwhelmed and burnt out. This was the case for Emilie, she also found that she would use being busy as an excuse for a variety of situations.

One of the techniques Emilie first used when starting to practice mindfulness was taking a course called “mindfulness for stress relief” which is widely recognised as having a scientific basis and being a versatile treatment method for those suffering from stress.

When we are talking about the start of the feminist movement we are actually talking about middle to upper class women. Women who already had some privilege. Poor white women have always had to work, they have always had to balance work and the home.

The need of the owning class was to be the sole lifeline, the sole support for a family. Which is why they would own all the land and stores in one town. It was also one of the reasons education became compulsory for children, it was somewhere for them to go and to be trained to be good workers.

If you don’t care about someone, it means that they don’t enter your mind. That they then aren’t part of your inner world, this is a large part of racism, this is why Black people have to push so hard to be seen by white people.

Black children are not treated tenderly by the white world. They have to learn from an early age how to deal with this, they don’t feel entitled to be seen or to be seen lovingly. Christina noticed in her store that if she smiled at white children they always smiled back, black children she smiled at always seemed confused.

Christina identifies as being Alt-Black. This encompasses so many things but simply, it is a way for her to identify with all of her ancestors and history as well as her own lived experience, including often being on the fringes of what is accepted and relishing those on the edges of society. Alt-Black is a way of being black in a world that is not confined by respectability politics, that is extremely focused on liberation and shows up for itself and what it is interested in rather than what it should be doing.

We can criticise social media for many things but one great advantage and positive impact it has had, is the ability to be able to see other peoples perspective, values and way of life. You get a lot more exposure to how other people think and how they live their lives differently to you.
