Why did David Cronenberg spend fifty years making films about bodies betraying the people living inside them?
David Cronenberg, the Canadian director known as the Baron of Blood and the King of Venereal Horror, built an entire subgenre out of that question. Working out of Toronto from the 1970s onward, he made the human body itself the monster: not something that chases you, but something you cannot get out of.
Therapists Shannon and Cathy take apart what body horror actually does to a viewer, why transformation, contagion and the loss of bodily control reach a nerve that a jump scare never touches, and why Cronenberg's films keep working decades after the practical effects stopped looking real.
In this episode:
Clinical concepts discussed: body horror · somatic anxiety · disgust response · loss of bodily autonomy · contagion and infection fear · transformation anxiety · health anxiety · embodiment and the abject · the psychology of practical versus digital effects
The rest of the Influential Horror Directors series:
Earlier director episodes: S3E65 Alfred Hitchcock · S4E28 Guillermo del Toro · S6E72 Ari Aster · S6E82 Jordan Peele
Two licensed therapists — one forensic psychologist, one clinical LMFT.
Until then... sleep safe. 😴

In this week’s What the Hell? episode of Terror Talk Podcast, we dive into the wildest, weirdest, and most head-scratching crimes you’ll hear all year. From fungi gone fatal to dinner parties turned deadly, we’re serving up a menu of chaos and comedy with a side of true crime absurdity.
Here’s a taste of the madness we cover:
🍄 A dinner party in Australia takes a deadly turn thanks to toxic mushrooms.
🍽️ A man literally kills his brother over not being thanked for dinner. (Talk about bad table manners.)
💥 A tourist breaks priceless glass art — by sitting on it for a “funny” photo.
🎉 A lawn care guy throws a massive neighborhood party… and charges admission.
🔥 Inside a women’s “sex cult” that lands its leaders in court for forced labor.
🤡 And yes… an actual clown car, because of course there is.
If you love your true crime served with a laugh (and maybe a cringe), this episode is for you.

Welcome to another gloriously unhinged One Star Review episode of Terror Talk Podcast, where we take the horror (and horror-adjacent) masterpieces you love — and read the most ridiculous, petty, and downright baffling one-star reviews the internet has to offer.
This week, we’re taking aim at:
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre – Apparently, some folks think Leatherface just needs a hug.
Fright Night – Because who wouldn’t move in next door to a vampire?
Jaws – “Too much shark.” (Yes… really.)
Child’s Play – A doll possessed by a killer is unrealistic? Say it ain’t so.
Silence of the Lambs – The reviews that will make you want to eat fava beans and chianti out of sheer frustration.
Interview with the Vampire – Evidently, eternal life isn’t enough to keep some reviewers entertained.
We roast these reviews, defend our beloved horror classics, and occasionally wonder if the reviewers even watched the movie they’re trashing. Spoilers abound — you’ve been warned!
If you love horror, hate nonsense, and enjoy a good laugh at the expense of people with wildly bad takes, this is the episode for you. Whether you’re a gorehound, a horror historian, or just here for the sarcasm, you’ll feel right at home.

Jeffrey Dahmer, the “Milwaukee Cannibal”
Richard Kuklinski, aka The Iceman
The night-stalking horror of Richard Ramirez, including Night Stalker by Philip Carlo
The chilling crimes of The Toy Box Killer
The twisted clown persona of John Wayne Gacy
The cult leader turned killer, Jim Jones
The calculating BTK killer, Dennis Rader
The spree killer charm of John Paul Knowles
The Happy Face Killer, Keith Jesperson
And finally, the monstrous acts of Albert Fish
This episode is all about reflection—what we’ve learned, which episodes shook us most, and a few of our favorites to record. It’s also a celebration of how far we’ve come in exploring the psychology of serial killers, media portrayals, and the dark fascination that keeps true crime fans coming back for more.

In this episode of Terror Talk Podcast, we're diving deep into the wild, weird, and wonderfully low-budget world of Roger Corman, the godfather of indie horror and cult cinema. From gothic Edgar Allan Poe adaptations to biker gangs and blood-soaked exploitation flicks, Corman did it all—and on a shoestring budget.
We chat about Corman’s signature filmmaking style, his unapologetically fast shooting schedules, and the way he could turn a dime into dread. We explore his most iconic horror films, his love of dramatic lighting and moody monologues, and how he shaped the future of horror by mentoring legends like Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, and James Cameron.
🔍 Plus: Corman Facts with Cath makes its triumphant return! Can Shannon guess them all? (Spoiler: probably not.)
Whether you’re a film buff, horror nerd, or just love a good practical effects story, this one’s for you.

If Roger Corman taught us anything, it’s this: you don’t need a million dollars to scare the hell out of people—just a fog machine, a good scream, and maybe Vincent Price.
