Terror Talk: True Crime, Serial Killers and Horror

What if you could replay every memory you’ve ever had? Would you ever stop?

⚠️ Trigger warning: This episode includes discussions of sexual assault and suicide. Listener discretion is advised.

Therapists Shannon and Cathy start their journey through Black Mirror with Season 1 (2011), Charlie Brooker’s three-episode debut. The National Anthem asks what a public’s appetite for humiliation permits. Fifteen Million Merits turns a talent show into exploitation. The Entire History of You gives everyone a memory implant, and the therapists take on what that would do to grief, healing and relationships. Shannon connects it to her own research on memoir: every time you retell a story, you change it, and that’s part of how people heal.

⚠️ Full spoilers for Black Mirror Season 1.

Covered in this episode:

• The National Anthem: Princess Susannah, the prime minister and the crowd that watched
• Fifteen Million Merits: Bing, Abi and the talent show that decides your life
• The Entire History of You: the grain, jealousy and replaying the past
• Why retelling a story changes it, and why therapists want you to keep telling it
• Mastery vs rumination: does retelling trauma retraumatize?
• Codependency and the rescuer trap in the helping professions
• WHAT THE HELL: a jail ceiling escape, a robber who fled into a nudist resort, and Alaska’s drunk-in-a-bar law

Clinical concepts: memory reconstruction, narrative therapy, rumination, intrusive thoughts, obsession, codependency, groupthink, dehumanization, coercion.

A correction: Series 1 episodes run about 45 to 60 minutes, not 90. And the memory implant in The Entire History of You is called the grain.
