Transparent did more for trans visibility than almost anything on TV. So what happens when its star is accused of harassing the trans women on his own set?
⚠️ Trigger warning: This episode includes discussions of sexual harassment allegations and transphobia. Listener discretion is advised.
Transparent, the Amazon Prime Video series starring Jeffrey Tambor as Maura Pfefferman, put a trans woman's transition at the center of a family drama. In 2018 Tambor was fired after allegations from castmates, including actress Trace Lysette.
Therapists Shannon and Cathy take an early Shrink Chat through the audience effect, minority stress, food insecurity and the unconscious bias baked into what we watch.
In this episode:
- The research: would a TV camera in the room wreck your exam?
- Shrauger, 1972: low self-esteem participants made nearly twice as many errors with an audience
- Transparent, Gaby Hoffmann, Bradley Whitford and the 1994 flashbacks
- Working with LGBTQ teens, and why the distress has shifted toward trans youth
- Jeffrey Tambor and the Trace Lysette allegations
- Oppression inside marginalized communities
- Football season: All or Nothing on Amazon Prime and Hard Knocks
- Food Stamped, the documentary where a couple eats healthy on a food stamp budget of $50 a week
- The dietitian's verdict: too few calories, and how much work it took
- The KonMari method and the budgeting rabbit hole
- The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media (seejane.org), and its research with Google and USC's engineering school
- Why late night is all Jimmies, and Ellen DeGeneres: Relatable
- Final Draft's free Inclusivity Analysis add-on for screenwriters
- Foliomania: Mrs. Meyer's Apple Cider and Maple Creme Oreos
Clinical terms: audience effect, social facilitation, self-esteem, minority stress, internalized and horizontal oppression, unconscious bias, gender parity, food insecurity, caloric restriction.
A note on late night: when this was recorded, Samantha Bee was hosting Full Frontal on TBS, and Lilly Singh's A Little Late premiered on NBC that same month, September 2019.
A note on Geena Davis: alongside the roles that dried up as she got older, the Institute's own founding story is that she noticed the gender gap in children's TV while watching with her daughter. It was founded in 2004.
