When boxing returns from its hiatus because of the COVID-19 global pandemic, one of the more intriguing questions is what will be next for former unified heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr.

After pulling off one of the biggest upsets in boxing history in June when Ruiz stopped Anthony Joshua to capture the IBF, WBA (Super), and WBO titles, the Ruiz lost dropped a one-sided unanimous decision to Joshua in their rematch back in December and hasn't returned since. Ruiz (33-2, 22 KOs) went on to fire head trainer Manny Robles and is currently looking for a new lead for his corner.

In the meantime, Ruiz's been publicly offered one bout since losing the gold, and that was a chance to face interim WBC titlist, Dillian Whyte. In an interview with his promoter Eddie Hearn on the Matchroom Boxing YouTube channel, the brash Englishman claims that Ruiz was offered $5 million to meet him in the United States.

"I think Andy Ruiz might be another (James) 'Buster' Douglas," Whyte said. "Shine once, and that's it. The lifestyle that he's enjoyed because let's be honest, we offered him $5 million to fight me in America, in his hometown. He's turning down that kind of money to fight me, and all these other guys say I'm garbage.

"He beat Joshua. He should take a fight with me for $5 million easy because that's what he got paid to fight Joshua the first time for the world titles. You just lost, and you're getting paid a lot of money to fight in America. I'll come to America and fight. But if you don't want to take it… these guys say a lot of things about me. But I'm an old-school dog. I come to bark. I don't play no games."

Promotional rivalries and network alliances are now as entrenched in the sport as 12-round championship fights and three-minute rounds. The promotion that represents a fighter determines their future fight options. Depending on their circumstances and the other fighters under the same banner, they could be right in the mix for big fights or left out looking for a matchup that will provide the profile-raising push that is most desperately needed. But consider a scenario in which promotional entities in the sport would make trades in the same way they are done in MLB, the NFL and the NBA, where the talent can be acquired for both the benefit of the athletes and the franchise.

Welterweight Maurice Lee (12-1-2, 5 KOs) has surfaced to low-key announce that he’s in the midst of negotiating a fight against unified titleholder Errol Spence (26-0, 21 KOs). Now after Spence’s scary car wreck it was probably safe to assume he wasn’t going to jump right back into the deep end, so a tune-up fight against someone like Lee seems pretty reasonable. Lee, of course, doesn’t view himself as a tune-up though.

1. AJ mentions Usyk, Kownacki, and Luis Ortiz as possible opponents to go along with obvious choices (Wilder, Fury, Jarrell Miller). Which of these names surprise you? Excluding Fury and Wilder, put in order fights you prefer for AJ.
2. Bob Arum calls BS on Lomachenko demanding 7mil for Lopez fight and Loma not wanting fight in NYC. Does this change your feelings on Loma being a duck?
3. Kevin Cunningham to reopen Gym on Monday, good thing or bad?
4. Devin Haney’s comments land him in Twitter jail? Was this just a poorly thought out tweet or does Haney deserve the backlash?

notes:

- Jeff Fenech, the former Mike Tyson trainer, says Mike Tyson could KO Wilder if Tyson had 6 weeks to train. How high would the odds have to be for you to place a $100 billion, Iron Mike? Is there a difference between the toughness in Tyson’s era and the toughness (or lack of) in Wilder’s era?
- Dan Rafael opens up about what happened with ESPN
