  • Observing With Webb - November Edition

Welcome to Observing With Webb, where a high school astronomy teacher tells you what you’re looking at, why it’s so cool, and what you should check out later this month…at night.

13th – Close Encounter – Venus, Jupiter – Get out after 6am on the morning of the 13th and look ESE toward the horizon.  You’ll find VERY bright Venus about a quarter of a degree away from Jupiter, making this a great time to get both of them in a picture in a telescope, along with all four Galilean Moons.  But get out there as close to 6am as possible, as the Sun will rise at about 6:45, ruining your view even by 6:25.

17th – Leonid Meteor Shower – You might just catch a couple meteors coming from Leo, if you get out early in the morning and look at the whole sky in general, like other meteor showers.  However, this meteor shower is losing steam throughout the years, but still producing about 15 per hour.

Paul Hill, Ralph Wilkins and Jenifer Millard host. Damien Phillips and John Wildridge produce.

Summary of content: What to look out, and up, for in November.

Ralph, Paul & Jen pick their highlights for this month’s skies; starting with the solar system objects on offer to observers and imagers:

    - A last look at Saturn for 2017 in the early evening sky.

    - A very impressive Jupiter/Venus conjunction on the 13th of November.

    - The Taurid meteor showers peaking on the 5th and 21st November and the Leonids on the 18th November.

    - Comet 2017 O1 ASASSN1 for binocular and telescope observers.

Next up, we take a deep sky pick from our list of favourites for this time of year:

Ralph – Messier 42, the Orion Nebula in the constellation Orion.

Jen – Messier 13, The Great Globular Cluster in Hercules.

Paul – NCG 404, Mirach’s Ghost in the constellation Andromeda.

And we finish this sky guide with November’s moon phases.

  • Guide To Space: When Was The First Light In The Universe?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icdeQ7HLc7A

    Published on Nov 4, 2016.

Fraser Cain hosts. The speed of light gives us an amazing tool for studying the Universe. Because light only travels a mere 300,000 kilometers per second, when we see distant objects, we’re looking back in time.

You’re not seeing the Sun as it is today, you’re seeing an 8 minute old Sun. You’re seeing 642 year-old Betelgeuse. 2.5 million year-old Andromeda.

In fact, you can keep doing this, looking further out, and deeper into time. Since the Universe is expanding today, it was closer in the past.

The Man in the Moon, the pyramids on Mars, every cloud ever… Humans have a tendency to pattern match when they're looking around the Universe. It's called pareidolia. What causes this behavior and how can we use this to debunk some hilarious conspiracy theories.

    http://www.unawe.org/kids/unawe1730/

On 17 August 2017, we detected gravitational waves for the sixth time. But for the first time, the event responsible for creating these waves was visible to telescopes, too! What’s more, the signal was like nothing that had ever been seen before. Yet the source was unmistakable.
