Welcome to the first episode of The Blog Readings (TBR) for 2019! I don't know about you all, but I'm excited for 2019! Last year was a great year for myself and All-Around Adventure. The podcast has grown, I've got to connect with some amazing people, I got in amazing shape, and the list goes on! This was because I had put great systems and strategies in place. Most of which I'll be carrying over so I can win and be successful this year as well. In this first episode of 2019 I talk with Garrett Cooper, CEO and lead guide of Feral Human Expeditions. Prior to becoming an expeditionary leader, Garrett has had several other incredible adventures. One of which was serving in the US Army as a Forward Observer. This led him to deploy to Iraq for 15 months while assigned to the 1-87 scout/sniper platoon with the 10th Mountain Division. Following his deployment, Garrett set out on another incredible adventure. While back at his home state of Oregon, he hopped on his motorcycle and made his way south. He then spent seven months riding through Central and South America, eventually making it to Tierra del Fuego. Now he travels to jungles around the world to lead expeditions and teach wilderness medicine. With one of his expeditions being when he and a partner paddled 600 miles through Cambodia and Vietnam to teach CPR in villages along the way. He also has done several expeditions in the Amazon and got to meet with people of the Matis tribe. In this episode Garret tells us more about his adventures! Including the highlights and challenges that he faced while riding his motorcycle through Latin America. As well as some of the interesting rituals that he took part in while with the Matis tribe. One of which involved him being poisoned! We also discuss some of the life lessons that he's learned from his adventures as well. Here we are, the final episode of 2018! In this special edition I'm excited to welcome back by brother Zach Guerrero for round two. Though this time we're going to be doing something a little bit different! Last time he was on the show he shared some of his travel experiences. Which included; living in Michigan's upper peninsula, studying abroad in Costa Rica, and trekking through the Moroccan wilderness. He also talked about some of the life lessons that he's learned along the way as well. But for this episode, we are flipping the script as I pass the role of host on to him. Now it's my turn to get put in the hot seat as an interviewee. And Zach does a really great job asking questions and making this a fantastic episode. One that I believe you all will find valuable. In today's episode I'm joined by Katherine Butler, creator and author of the travel blog World Wide Honeymoon. Katherine's story begins in a small farming community in Kentucky. With local travels to different state parks to go camping and do other outdoor activities. Though eventually she started to look for ways to travel abroad. This led her to study abroad in Grenoble, France through a program called Global Scholars. Since then she started traveling more and more. At first with friends and by herself, and eventually with her now husband. Along the way she's picked up a few useful skills centered around travel hacking and couples travel. Now she shares what she's learned through her blog. In this episode Katherine shares some of her travel stories, and we take a deeper dive into the topics of couples travel and travel hacking. Discussing couple dynamics during long-term travel, how to accumulate miles to pay for travel, and how to take your dream honeymoon for less. Today I'll be talking with Alex Starr, founder and host of the Rewrite the Rules podcast! Alex's tenure as a traveler began right here in the US. He grew up in northern California, and eventually found his way to Denver, Colorado to join AmeriCorps. Which led him to travel all over the country to help fulfill different projects. It was during this time when he learned the skills to become a Wildland Firefighter. Which is what he pursued upon completing his service in AmeriCorps. This took him to some rural areas like southern Arizona, near the Mexican border, as well as other parts of the country. After working as a firefighter, Alex decided that it was time to venture abroad. He made his way to Peru, and spent months traveling around Latin America. Soon finding his way to several remote areas, such as the Darién Gap between Panama and Colombia. During these months of traveling, Alex made many fond memories and learned some valuable life lessons along the way. Now he shares what he's learned through the Rewrite the Rules podcast. A show where he speaks with people from around the world with alternative lifestyles, mindsets, and stories to show you all the possibilities that this world has to offer. In this episode I speak with Dan Taylor, remote site medic, instructor, and world traveler with Frozen Medical. Dan's career as a medical professional began with search and rescue when he was in high school. He then transitioned into ambulance work while he was in college. After doing much work as an EMT, he decided that it was time for a change. He moved on to remote medicine, and found opportunities to provide patient care and instruction in other parts of the world. Some of which include; a Syrian refugee camp in Greece, in the Canadian Rockies with the Discovery Channel, a commercial fishing vessel in the Bering Sea, and as of the recording of this episode, Moshi, Tanzania. His profession has also led him to some precarious situations in places like Mosul, Iraq. With chemical attacks, suicide bombings, AK-47 gun fire, and an array of other threats being present. All on his first day in the city! In this episode Dan tells us about his career and his experiences with working around the world. Discussing what it was like while he was working in Mosul in the midst of all the chaos. As well as the challenges that he faced upon returning home, and the life lessons that he learned from his experiences. I also ask him to lend us his expertise as a medical professional, and he shares some critical medical skills and important equipment to have so that you can keep yourself safe both at home and while traveling. In this episode I talk with Julia Kuhn, creator and author of the travel blog The Traveling Traveler. Julia is also a Speech-Language Pathologist who works short-term contracts for her job. This has led her to live in many different parts of the United States, and has allowed her to travel to other parts of the world as well. Though getting to where she is now was not easy. Like any healthcare professional, she had to undergo intense academic studies. Which involved taken undergraduate and graduate courses back-to-back. But through it all she set herself up with a rewarding career that she’s been able to combine with her passion for travel. In this episode Julia tells us about her journey to become a healthcare professional, and some of the places that she has traveled to along the way. We also discuss a variety of life lessons and topics such as; how to be more effective during academic studies, embracing a minimalist lifestyle, and ways to reduce the cost of traveling, among other things.
