Every once in a while a new paradigm of thinking enters your mind, reformats your worldview, and blows your sense of what’s possible in life wide open.

A friend of mine used to refer to these as brainquakes, and they might only happen once every few years.

Zan gave many of us such a brainquake with his initial Ars Amorata philosophy. Now, a brainquake has happened unto Zan.

The mathematician-philosopher Alfred North Whitehead spent his life trying to understand the nature of reality. His conclusion: beauty is the purpose of the universe — and God’s entire project is forever luring you toward more beauty.

The upside of this is that every single event in the cosmos happens as an invitation… ushering us, ever deeper, into moments of wonder, beauty, awe, enchantment.

However, every time you stay in your seat, delete the message, swallow your truth — you’re not just missing an opportunity. You’re choosing inertia over beauty. And inertia, argues Zan, is evil.

My inner critic was already giving me stick for not talking to that beautiful woman; now you’re telling me my failure to approach her is evil?!

Well, it takes a lot of energy to suppress God’s plan of beauty.

On the other side: the more courageous the jump, the more beauty can come.

Who Longs More: Women or Men?

The words “longing” and “yearning” have become mainstays in our recent conversation with men. Strange - these are terms you find in Rumi’s mystic poetry, or in femininity goddess work, not the male dating arena. But here we have it: men owning their longing for relationship, and all the poetic wisdom that the longing itself contains.

At the same time, more men than ever are voicing their discomfort with terms like “certainty” and “conviction”. These are classic ‘masculine qualities’. Sure, it’s dicey to claim certainty and conviction over anything in today’s world… but will any great love affair take off if both parties are restricted to yearning, and neither embodies a bit of conviction about their feelings?

If you’re reading in the northern hemisphere, tonight is the longest night of the year. The ‘sun’, so to speak, has gone down, way down, and he will not rise again for three days.

In my younger days, this was one of the best times. Our pagan roots would pour through—parties, drinking, hook-ups that in any other season wouldn’t dare happen. At the coldest time of year, people became unseasonably warm.

These days, I tend to down tools in early December, travel somewhere a few days, watch the year’s best movies, and plot out what’s to come. By the time Jan rolls around, I’ve actioned my new year’s intention, and find myself in a whole new place. _Mentally, geographically, all the rest of it._

I didn’t plan this end-of-year rhythm: it’s just arisen as a natural cycle. Many things have to shift when you grow beyond party culture.

The older I get, the more I see how _shaped_ we are by seasons and rituals. I sense it’s wise to move with them.
